i used canada line tonight to get to the fireworks and home - well i drove and parked close to a station... anyway on the train there we got off at yaletown - a ton of people stayed onboard - most seemed to be heading to the fireworks - why they didn't get off there i don't know its the best station for english bay...

and than on the way back we left walked with teh crowds to the station which has no lines - they were selling tickets next to teh station - the machines had short lines - i bought a ticket from the transit people set up - no line - no lines for the trains - the platform was busy and most stood back since the train there was for YVR and it wasn't overcrowded - comfotrable but standing room only - it was painless

I'm a bit baffled by the Sun's week-long special on transit fare evasion....it's as if they're trying to teach people how to successfully evade paying a fare.

There might have been 3000 people over the course of the night but probably only 1000 people max at any given time. It was interesting.
Translink putting a stop to ride-backs during the fireworks will have helped with dispersing the crowds, plus make it a lot more fair.

Same here.

I drove to the park n ride at Bridgeport and took the Canada Line. At the station they were already selling return fare tickets fairly early in the evening still. It was pretty busy at Bridgeport as there were many coming out of the park and ride and many more coming off buses. By the time the train arrived the platform was full (not including all the police, and the skids they caught with beer under their shirts).

Got off at Yaletown. Too bad we still don't have the streetcar or that the historic railway wasn't running, or else I would have gotten off at OV. I would agree with SpongeG that Yaletown was surprisingly normal, activity wise. There sure were a lot of staff there though, selling return tickets and setting up barriers for lines later.

After the fireworks we decided to enjoy a bit of Granville and walked down past all the bars to VCC. Went down into the station and there was a short line for tickets, as they had staff selling exact change event fares, which saved people a lot of time (very smart of them). There was a controlled lineup to go down the stairs. It seemed long, but everyone infront of us got on a single train. Probably only had to wait 3 minutes before I was on a train, and there were a lot of people there already and many more flowing into the station after us.

Looked at the platform sign, and the train I was getting on was for Brighouse, and so was the one after. They were running trains 2 to Brighouse for every 1 to YVR. The train was packed. At Yaletown the platform seemed pretty busy and more squeezed on and it was a tight fit; all the Asians were joking that it was like they were back in Hong Kong or Beijing. I figured the train itself had more people on it than any Canada Line train I rode during the Olympics. Nobody got off until 41st, and then quite a few got off at 49th and Marine, and almost half the train got off at Bridgeport. The lines for the 601 and South Surrey buses were quite long, and quite a few people went into the park and ride.

I would say quite a few people from all over the South side of Metro are taking the Canada Line to the fireworks.

It's actually pretty easy to get to the Ferry from Surrey Central. Take transit to Scott Road station and get on the 640. It's timed to meet up with the 620 at Ladner and takes you to the terminal. The whole trip from Scott Road takes an hour, which isn't bad as the same car trip takes about 35-45 minutes.

Canada Line service resumes after mechanical problem

METRO VANCOUVER -- Canada Line commuters found themselves stranded at Bridgeport Station for about 20 minutes this morning after a problem with the switch on the rail line between Bridgeport and Templeton stations.

So there was no transit to Surrey then! I guess the population was too small?

Travelling from Scotsdale is pretty easy as well, less than 1 hour to the ferry using the C76. Buses from Newton go frequently to Scotsdale so that is not too bad.

Taking the 640 back from Ladner in the weekday afternoons can be slow due to traffic on River Road.

Going back from the ferry in the evening can be bad if the ferry is late. I was on the Gulf Islands ferrry and it was 1/2 hour late. We would have had to wait 40 minutes for the next bus but we got a ride with someone we met at the ferry lineup on Mayne Island.

I wouldn't be surprised if people continue to cheat fares at Gateway

Interesting article in the Sun today on Skytrain's most violent stations:

Broadway-Commercial and Surrey Central have more violent crime than any other transit stations in the region and Stadium has the most drug offences, according to an exclusive analysis of transit police data by The Vancouver Sun.

In response to a request from The Sun, the transit police service released a spreadsheet detailing all 28,000 incidents recorded by its officers in 2009.

The vast majority of those incidents were tickets for fare evasion, but transit police also recorded more than 3,500 crimes last year — everything from possession of stolen property to drug trafficking...

If you download those workbook, you can view alot of data, including boarding data for each of the SkyTrain stations... Here is the one for Canada Line (expressed as a % of all boardings):

Surprisingly, Templeton has much higher ridership than I thought.. If we extrapolate the figure to full year and compare against Expo and Millennium Line, its only ranked the 6th in the most under-used station

Maybe I should post the data for all stations...

Yes.

But having almost the same ridership as Aberdeen is quite surprising..

I'm a bit surprised by some of those figures...for one thing I had expected Bridgeport to be higher.

I guess many of the people waiting on the platform are merely there to switch trains, which is not included in the ridership count as they does not actually enter or exit the station.

I also think Bridgeport is a commuters station, so it will be very busy at peak travel times, but quieter the rest of the day. The stations ahead of it are located at either a mall, business center, transit exchange, or the Airport: destinations that see steady travel throughout the day.

Bridgeport was the most overrated skytrain stop (in term of ridership) by some member here. If you ever use the station or the bus loop during mid-day or in weekends/holidays, it is a rather deserted place.

I've combined the Canada Line data with the one for Expo and Millennium Line.

The Canada Line boarding number are estimated by extrapolating the 2009 total boarding figure of 11,391,371 (from Metro Vancouver stat), and multiple by 2.66 to approximate an annual ridership of 30,301,047. So the station boarding on Canada Line does not come from an actual data - they are my estimate only!

The station boarding data doesn't seems to include transfers between Expo and Millennium Line, as well as between the two branches of Canada Line.. so the number for Commercial-Broadway, Columbia, and Bridgeport may seems to be lower.

About Templeton.. I was using the wrong number, and it is actually the 10th most under-used station... This does seems a bit high, isn't it?

And something extra...
