On a plane, if I detect that the person in front is about to recline, I brace my knees until they come to a stop against them. They think they've gone all the way, but in actual fact, I have forced them into a compromise.

Of course, emergency exit seats are great. I have told the people at work that book the flights that on WestJet, 12F is mine. That's the one with no seat in front of it.
But back on-topic about transit, I just find that any side-seating configuration tends to be more comfortable for everyone. When the train is full, the standers are more easily accommodated. When it is less full, everyone gets a seat and has plenty of leg room. And nobody has to get up to let anyone else off, etc.
