The high height would also be becasue of the design of the station. There's the pedestrian bridge over bow across to the bus depot site, then, the station has to be a level above that. That, combined with the clearance required over the train tracks makes for a tall structure.

Clearance to underside of pedestrian bridge = 7.5 metres.
Minimum from underside of pedestrian bridge to walkway of pedestrian bridge = 0.3 metres (roughly)
Headroom required for pedestrian bridge to underside of guideway= 2.4 metres min.
Guideway depth = 1.5 metres (guess)
Top of rail to Rail to platform = 1 metre.

TOTAL: 12.7 metres (42 feet), give or take a bit, to the LRT platform height.

Actually CP had no issues with clearance at all. The minimum height would be that required by existing parking interests behind the properties on 10th avenue. The overall height needs to be sufficient to clear the Eastbound Bow Trail ramp without creating a "roller coaster effect between the 14 Street and Bow Trail flyovers.

I think CP does have an issue with clearance, but the city checked out what the required clearance was and met it, so no complaints by CP.

They require 7.5 metres of clearance above the track, I believe. As per one of my previous posts, it's part of why the station must be so high. Like you say, there may be other factors as well.

The newly-created Mount Westbrook (17th Ave @ 33rd St) just keeps growing and growing. An incredible amount of excavated material. The hole is fricking deep!

The Canada Line seems to do that a little, not that you can feel it. Can only really perceive it since you can watch out the front window.

Would have been interesting if they had played with the alignment to get a ground level station (would have to be a huge change for reasons that were probably discussed back 2 or 3 years ago on one of these threads). Now that would be a roller coaster!

Great video. This part of the rail line might just put the buildiers of the crowfoot line to shame if they complete it on time!! Amazing progress already!

Wow, thanks for posting! Those shots of the Westbrook Station area are impressive, there's no sign there's a city anywhere close by.

They've also started putting up forms for the bottom of the sunalta platform, they've erected scaffolding around the 4 west-most columns (of the 8 that are now done) and theres metal forms spanning between the columns on top of the scafolding

Caught a few more shots of the alignment, mostly by Sunalta and Millennium Park. Sunalta station is going to be huge.

Related to the WLRT, council passed the rezoning of the area around Sunalta Station earlier today. Only concern was over the Husky station on 12th which I believe was removed from the rezoning as the new zoning they proposed doesn't allow it and if they ever wanted to do anything (expand, or rebuild if an accident occurs) they'd be prevented from.

Should be pretty neat to watch all the construction ramp up as the weather gets warmer. Pretty amazing seeing all the guideway columns pop up all over the place especially on 9th avenue/14th street.

Great Pics, really shows how fast the progress is. I noticed that the former bus station at westside rec center now has a sizable hole in it for the trench, and it only closed on the weekend. If only all city projects could be this efficent.

Also is anyone aware of development plans under the elevated portions of the guideway? Someone told me about a project in Zurich there they are putting a large (i think covered) market under their part of elevated track. I'll try and find some more info on this, as it only was mentioned to me breifly. But it seems like a good way to get rid of the zombie plauge that will no doubt attack the sunnyside area.
