I do like having the bridges covered, though, especially in winter and going over freeways. Here's a nicer looking one that replaced one like that above:

Maybe it's just me but glassed open truss designs have a certain appeal. They look vaguely railwayish.

You're right, those are awful. The coloured awning on the one reminds me of the elevated walkway to the saddledome from Vic Park station.

That one bridge from Westbrooke to the new condos definitely needs to be replaced.

West LRT update - May 23/2010

The truss launcher (looking from WB Bow Trail). The sections on the far left haven't been connected to the rest yet, when completed it will be ~150m long I've been told)

I was also looking at who is working along the route, so far I've seen KLS doing excavation, Whissel doing utilities and sewer, Graham appears to be doing the trench (all the metal forms have their name on them) along 17th ave and North American foundations doing work on the guideway piers.

Especially when you realise that the exposed rebar at the top of the column is where the underside of the platform begins, and the platform floor is another 10+ feet higher, and the roof is higher still.

I'm 99% sure the crayola crayon colours on the bridge over McKnight are part of the public art for the project, and not part of the engineering firms design.

Hope you like the "art" placed on bridge abutments in the last few years...

I can tell you that for some projects, it was as simple as "we need something to put on the abutment faces" "Okay...MOUNTAINS! Everyone loves mountains!!"

Those poor construction workers, I can just imagine the enormous hole at westbrook station is a mud pit after all that rain and snow

On 17th just east of 69th they have excavated a large section of the tunnel trench, and i think they are building a temporary bridge for when the trench needs to cross to the otherside of 17th.

Forget 2012, with all the progress they have made in a short time, it looks like they will wrap up construction by the end of the summer

It is a mud pit, but I'm sure the SLGJV (SNC-Lavalin Graham Joint Venture) guys will clean it up to keep on pace. All I want is for them to clean up the muddy sidewalks where their construction gates are. They are doing well sweeping the streets, so cleaning the sidewalks shouldn't be a stretch.

From the pace, I would estimate the bulk of the cut-and-cover tunnel work that has traffic impacts, ie: 37th Street, 45th Street, and Bow Trail @ 33rd to be done by the end of the summer.

Any idea why the elevation is so high? I imagine that the height makes the space below the line more useable and less prone to zombies congregating. Is this the answer to my own question?

They've updated the traffic map with a few more nice icons, including embedding the traffic cameras (both permanent ones as well as the mobile trailer mounted ones) into the map, as well as they've added an icon to indicate that work has begun on the 1st substation between Sirocco and 69th Street stations

Need for double height container carrying rail cars + whatever the largest piece of track maintenance equipment is I would guess. Perhaps also air rights for the corridor were cheaper from some of the land owners with more clearance.
