What's wrong with a terraced parking lot hahaha.

Yeah, good points about RLV completion and parking requirements. Well, maybe the Phase II restaurant/pub will proceed before the feature building. There's plenty of parking over there...2014!

RFP for Restaurant

However, it will be later rather than sooner before we see the "feature building" with the restaurant/pub go up. It is the intention of the City to wait for the majority of construction on Parcel Y to finish before issuing an RFP for the feature building. Just so that construction of the two don't conflict with each other, I assume.

The City actually put out a request for RFPs over a year ago for this restaurant site. They received zero responses to the RFP...in part due to it being a land lease agreement and in part due to RiverLanding being to far from completion.

That's right, I should've chosen my words better as to not make it sound like an RFP hasn't been issued before. They will however wait longer this time around until River Landing is further along.

AGS Parking

Page 3-13 of the Functional Plan allows for parking garage entrances on the riverbank side of the AGS. This seems to be rather stupid since it will set the AGS apart from the riverbank and make access to it by pedestrians more difficult. Once again the car is given priority over what is sane. The only entrance for parking should be off the north side of the AGS next to the Persephone loading dock. [I would have quoted from the original document, but it is protected from copying anything from it. I wonder what they are afraid will be copied?]

^ I read that with disappointment as well. I agree, an entrance from the north is a superior choice. Nothing like a garage door to spice up the riverfront promenade...err street (I believe RLV also has a parkade entrance on Spadina).

In some places such as Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, as late as the 1990s some busy intersections still showed cobblestones through worn down sections of pavement.

That stuff has been there for awhile now. I believe it's from the actual reno's to the Water Treatment plant.

It looks like there are still meetings/approval's to be had before the trail upgrades are official:

I mailed the heritage society asking about if an initiative has been proposed to reclaim Saskatoon's cobblestone roads etc. I'll share the response with you.

Hi
I'm a longtime lurker on SSP and a former Saskatoon resident (70's, 80's)
As a student without a car, I used to bike around a lot, and therefore noticed things like exposed cobblestone.

I know that Saskatchewan Drive from Broadway down to the Victoria Street bridge used to have areas of exposed cobblestone from years gone by. Also, 19th Street from about 3rd Ave. to Avenue A (especially under the freeway underpass) had bit of exposed cobblestone.

Ahh, you jogged my memory on the 19th Street cobblestone. I faintly recall some news pieces highlighting the discovery of cobblestone when they removed the 1st Avenue on-ramp and reconstructed 19th a couple years back. The Sask. Crescent to Traffic Bridge (officially renamed) stuff may still be there.

Thanks for the info brannelford.

@kcg087 - is cobblestone more attractive than asphalt, specifically for roadways? Motorists would destroy them in a couple years. I think cobblestone sidewalks are an attractive option. But again, the practicality of them would be the first concern for the city. I'm all for improving the sense of place in key areas of the city, but reclaiming cobblestone roads seems like a battle not worth fighting.

However, I do like your positive attitude towards reclaiming Saskatoon's past

Oooohhh. Check out the views on these lots at Prominence Pointe. I would post pictures, but it's all flash. Prominence Pointe is a new development out by Cathedral Bluffs Estates. Some of the houses out there are incredible.

Cobblestone

There are tons of cobblestone (or brick) roads here in the Netherlands. They have the nice effect of blurring the pedestrian/car distinction and making the whole area more pedestrian friendly as cars are forced to drive slower. You wouldn't find this on major roads though. I'm not sure why this isn't done in North America - maybe our winters are simply too brutal? I did read something recently though that they are taking this concept from the Dutch and implementing it in a new neighbourhood on the West Don lands on the Toronto waterfront.

It just makes sense to me, the aesthetic factor is just so pleasing, as well it does make it safer for pedestrians so quaint side roads would be nice if they had this, or even more major ones like say Broadway which is pretty dangerous if you drive too fast.

I still think the homes in Cathedral Bluffs are pretty cookie cutter, I'm still waiting for the modern masterpiece to be built in Saskatoon

I was living in the Netherlands for 4 months last year and loved the cobblestone streets and sidewalks. I totally agree that it makes areas more pedestrian friendly, although try biking on poorly maintained cobblestone... great way to destroy your tires! I would love to see some cobblestone pedestrian streets in Saskatoon, the only thing to keep in mind is the maintenance costs. In the Netherlands they were constantly ripping up entire streets, and putting them back together by hand, brick by brick... must be expensive.

That would be, I wonder if pavers would be just as bad? It would be AMAZING to see the road from midtown to the Bess. done in cobblestone and the sidewalks all made to have the glowing purple blocks SOOO AMAZING! Even this one addition woudl be spectacular.

^ I agree. It could be such a grand promenade, with the Bess at one end and Midtown Plaza at the other.
I also wish they would open up 21st Street entirely. Traffic or not. There's so many neat shops and restaurants/cafes that you would never even see unless you had to go somewhere specific, like a bank. (Unless you were on foot of course. , but keeping in mind that we are a winter city...)

I don't know. Maybe it's a bad idea. I just think it would really boost the businesses along 21st.

I completely agree, remove the little medians, put pavers the whole length, and glowing sidewalks, art on all the corners and rezone for some mega mixed use, emphasizing retail and residential, ITS A DREAM!!!

8th & Louise

The "For Sale" , "For Lease" signs have all been removed from the old Shell location on 8th and Louise and replaced with what appears to be construction fencing seemingly preparing for demolition.

Anyone know what or who might be lurking in the background on this one?
