Perhaps Mount Royal U could have done something similar with this one?

I guess it's also the wrong size to be re-used as a pedestrian bridge over the Bow or Elbow rivers somewhere.

Anyway, it too late now to change their plans to chop it up & recycle it into rebar.

Update: The deck and railings are gone, leaving the structural steel. This bridge shouldn't take too long to breakdown tonight.

It is a couple blocks east of the Shaganappi Point Station itself. I had meant to add a rendering of the bridge to the first page but I guess I haven't gotten to that yet.

P.S. How is the LRT supposed to travel underneath it at that height? I thought that was the point of replacing it.

The drawings aren't anywhere close to scale. The LRT requires just slightly over 4m of clearance including caternary, and most roads require 4.5-5m of vertical clearance at a minimum so it shouldn't be an issue. Its not being replaced due to vertical clearance issues, rather due to its width and design for pedestrians and cyclists.

I do like having the bridges covered, though, especially in winter and going over freeways. Here's a nicer looking one that replaced one like that above:

Maybe it's just me but glassed open truss designs have a certain appeal. They look vaguely railwayish.

The city has a blanket policy of awarding bridge design ONLY to engineering firms (the Peace Bridge is an obvious exception, and there are a few). This new bridge was not designed by an architect.

There are also practical things to consider, in Ottawa freezing rain and large continuous accumulations of snow might justify the roof. If not - avoiding piles of salt which might seriously shorten the bridges life span might pay for the extra 'facility' in not too long a time frame.

They've started moving the sections of the launching truss from the staging area to where the guideway begins and have started joining the sections together. This thing is going to be massive once its fully assembled.

I noticed last night that the dismantling of the pedestrian bridge over Bow trail is well underway. Most of the concrete platform had been removed leaving just the steet truss over Bow. Stranglely enough there was little to NO construction fencing around it meaning that any IDIOT could try to walk across.

I'm told by oldtimers that before they put railings on it, kids routinely ran across it when it was built.

I walked over and watched the removal of the pedestrian bridge at Bow Trail and 24th Street SW this evening. Everything went off without a hitch.

First, the concrete bases holding the steel were removed from both sides. Next, the massive (300 tonnes ea.) mobile cranes came in on both sides and did their setup. When that was complete, the riggers prepared the bridge for the lift. The welders took over and cut the steel on both sides. At midnight, the bridge was lifted up and placed on the northside of Bow Tr. That process is documented here, by me:

Looks like 6 columns have been poured at Sunalta. Amazing how tall they look, the platform really is quite a ways up in the air (the platform sits on top of the columns)
