This is fair. The last news article I read regarding the LRT was the stabbings. If I was a Kerby client and there was a big station right in front of the building I would wonder what kind of magnet it would act as to attract crime. No, it's completely unfair. Like I said earlier, accessibility is a major barrier for the elderly and it is unfair to them that because of a misunderstanding they are going to lose what could be a very big positive. The job of those looking after the elderly is not to cave into their misguided fears but do what is best for them. I'll admit there are some safety concerns but nothing that cannot be mitigated with thought and care.

Interestting to note from the May West LRT update that the Westside Rec bus station at 69 St and 17 Ave is getting the axe for the next couple years.

Be interesting to see how buses get in and out of the temporary bus station at Sirocco. Also wonder if they will be terminating the 301 and 2 at Sirocco as well.

The temporary bus station will be the same place as the Stampede bus stop, just it will take up way more room in that parking lot. I don't think there's anything special otherwise for it.

From the news letter:

On May 15, 2010, the pedestrian bridge at 24 Street S.W. will temporarily close to accommodate Bow Trail road work and the LRT alignment. During the night of May 19, 2010, eastbound and westbound Bow Trail will be fully closed between Crowchild Trail and 26 Street S.W. to accommodate removal of the pedestrian bridge. A new bridge will be completed in Fall 2010.

Where are the Bridge Protesters? Where is the media frothing up the ... froth?

Not sure if this has hit the news (here or elsewhere), but after reading through the minutes of last week's City Council meeting, I came across a disturbing WestLRT related occurrence:

PAC2010-02 Naming of the relocated light-rail transit (LRT) station east of 11 Street S.W. on 7 Avenue

ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATIONS
That Council:
1. Approve PAC2010-02 Naming of 7th Avenue LRT Station ’11 Street S.W. Station’ for the new LRT station east of 11 Street S.W. on 7 Avenue;
2. Approve Mount Royal University request to be recognized within the ’11 Street S.W. LRT Station’ to commemorate Mount Royal University 100th anniversary in 2010-2011; and
3. That the report Recommendations and Attachments remain confidential under sections 17(1), 17 (4)(f) and 24(1)(a) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, until Council rises and reports on this matter.
AMENDMENT, Moved by Alderman Mar, Seconded by Alderman Hodges, that the Administration Recommendations contained in Report C2010-27 be amended by deleting the name “11 Street S.W. Station” and by substituting the name “Downtown West/Kerby Station”.

Yes. Look up a few posts where that image is above. Its being removed this week and a new bridge will be open this fall.

The first design for the Shaganappi Point station had the pedestrian bridge replaced at the station. For all kinds of reasons, this wasn't going to work.

The old bridge was a bit tough to ride on (narrow, with rails at each entrance). We thought an improved bridge at it's existing location with a supporting berm in the park (using overburden from the Westbrook excavation) would reduce regional bike traffic thorough the level crossing at 26 Street, and move it on to the bridge. The berm would extend east from 25A Street to the bridge, ideally with a bike path on top. A level ride would then be possible from 17th Avenue to the north end of the bridge at Jacques Lodge. People from the south would also have unimpeded access to the river.

A possible Jacques lodge development could then move the bikes through their property to the path at the end of 24th, which would remove the existing swing down onto 24th North along Bow Trail.
