^ I had heard the FNUC Building had sold, but I didn't know to who or for what. Any more info on its supposed conversion to condos?

City Park is great, one of my favourites in the city for sure.

I don't believe it is sold yet and it may not become condominiums as the Community is trying to work out a solution to keep it as is (i.e. keep the structure but repurpose it). The recent City Park LAP determined that the densities in CP are already relatively high (since the neighborhood includes many large multiunit buildings on the edge of downtown) and so there will be some opposition to condos.

I would love to see multiuse - condos over retail, maybe integrating the existing structure, but I don't think people in the neighborhood or city are advanced enough in their thinking to accept something like this. Works great in heritage neighborhoods in bigger cities, as you get small islands of local retail (i.e. bakery, hardware etc) intergrated into the community.

When I first read lbird's post I immediately pictured the conversion of the existing building into condos and thought "Great!" and not brand new construction. Keeping the existing structure and re-purposing would be great indeed.

Having lived in City Park for the last 10 years I would say that most people would be receptive to a unique multiuse as you have said. However, plain bland condo's would not be viewed as a positive development.

I agree that many CP residents would be open to such an idea, and there are some very progressive thinkers in the neighborhood and many others that are at least open minded. However, having sat through much of the LAP process, I learned that there are still many who oppose increasing density and/or retail in any manner. The idea of more retail (e.g. on third avenue) really had some people riled. The general perception seemed to be that "condos = Duchess Court (which is undeniably plain and bland)" and "retail = 7-11 (with the attendant loitering and garbage in the back alley)". It would be a hard sell to convince people that there are other ways to go about high density and retail, and that these could actually benefit the neighborhood, but I suppose it could be done. I guess the bigger problem is that we have few developers interested in doing such projects. Most are more than happy to build bland and make money.

I know of one store in Saskatoon that is the first of its kind in Canada so having stores that are no where else aren't uncommon but not common either.

By the way, I assume you're talking about Fudds (or do we have another?)? Which did at one point have several Canadian locations open for a number of years!

From my understanding, Calgary and Toronto already have Cold Stone Ice Cream stores, so Saskatoon wouldn't be the first in Canada to get one.

I don't see that anywhere on their website. They have franchise opportunities in Canada, but it doesn't look like any have been bought just yet. Although Wikipedia contradicts that. So maybe you're right.

There are imitations of Cold Stone Creamery, where they have the cold stone. We had one here in Saskatoon at Jerry's Food Emporium a year or two ago, but then they got rid of it. I think it was under a different company, called Arctic Stone or something along those lines.

It will be another one of those "big nights" at Council regarding Lake Placid, an evening when all us SSPers collectively hold our breath waiting for some good news.

I know some of you don't want to keep talking about the possible ice cream shack, but apparently Timmy's owns Cold Stone and they opened 6 test combo Timmy's/Cold Stone locations in Canada last year to see how it would do with plans to open a whole lot more--maybe the new Timmy's will be another combo location.

I've heard rumours that the report won't come back to the next City Council meeting, which would be interesting in itself. Additionally, those same rumours suggest that full funding is not in place.
