that's great news! For a while I was worried this project would never resurrect. Providence Place will be a great improvement from the vacant field where the Jubilee Center once stood!!!

This is such good news!! I think all three projects will be great additions for that area! I'm looking forward to seeing renderings. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come, that maybe the economy really is picking up.

Personally, I'm happy we won't be having the 2012 republican convention in SLC. As a Utah Democrat, I feel like I already put up with enough republican BS. We don't need to import any more, thanks very much.

Providence is 7 stories (5 above 2 parking levels and stores?) The other one is I think 4-6 stories

Salt Lake is so pretty right now. The foothills around SL are greener than I've ever seen them. I wish they'd stay like that all the time... compare to the patchy yellow we had last summer:

So, I looked at the renderings for the apartments, and I am really not a fan of Eastside Apartments. They remind me a lot of the architecture that boomed in France in the 70's. This was made to house large numbers of immigrants without housing (good thing) but ended up being countless buildings that never looked good and quickly fall into shambles. I'm currently living in France, and they are just areas you need to avoid. I wish they would choose something that would age with more class, even though they are doing it for low-rent tenants. This isn't by any means saying anything against poor people or immigrants: it is the architecture that is provided to their income levels.

Providence Place, however, looks good. I wish there were a color rendering so that I could really make my decision, but I think that it really does look good.

Actually, Eastside apartments will be market rate. They're estimating $900/month, making them on par with some of the more expensive apartments in SLC. Providence Place is affordable housing.

Eastside looks like they're going for a 'modern' design, more in lines with the Metro condos. It's hard to tell though as the rendering is still pretty vague, but they should be high-end.

I squirm when I hear unimaginitive architecture being called modern. I mean is that crap really the culmination of our architectural knowledge of humankind throughout the ages?

Actually, I interpret 'modern' as a style of trying to be creative while using cheaper materials to help create more of a profit. It's happening now, which makes it modern.

Haha I totally agree with both you guys! Personally I interpret "modern" architecture as using mass produced prefabricated materials to erect a boxlike facility- certainly not create a building. They call the City Center casino down here in Vegas "modern" architecture. I find it an uninviting and unimaginative mass of steel and concrete. The East Side appartments look like something that belongs in the Eastern Bloc.

Eh, there's good modern and there's bad modern. There are lots of buildings that look like something an apple product would be shipped in, and though many of them are very unimaginative and boring, I don't know what else to call them but modern, even though much better modern stuff is out there.
