Well, I guess that's what this is going to be:

I'm not sure where this mysterious 1000 S. TRAX station is that will be getting one as well....

This is kind of off topic, but when I zoom into the intersection of 200S and Main in google earth, two overlays of cities (one of them possibly Orlando) show up there. I don't have any layers turned on or anything. Do you guys see this too?

It was Arrested Development .... But hey, we're getting a movie out of it in 2011.

The booth, btw, will be a place that sells snacks for TRAX riders according to KSL Newsradio earlier this week.

I was at the SL Central Station waiting to get on the FrontRunner to head up North and I was so tired. I would have killed for a cup of coffee. Okay, I probably would not have killed, but it would have been great. I fully support adding a snack shack to the station.

Thank God I was not in the way of your coffee crave . I think getting a little bite to eat and grabbing a newspaper or magazine would make a pleasent ride after a long day at work.

Salt Lake's wide streets

I was thinking about Salt Lake City's wide street and the constant complaints you hear about them as well as the barrier they create for a pedestrian-friendly city. But we have examples of other great cities that have some wide streets and ways they have utilized them and made them much more city friendly. Take Chicago for instance:

Median flower and garden beds taking a lane away, and wider sidewalks can go a long way. I'd love to see SLC take more initiative to do things like this, especially for downtown streets.

State Street and West Temple for example:

Every city has wide streets, it is just SLC has more of them then most. Even when crossing Michigan Ave, it never feels as wide, not just because of the planters, but the buildings make the street width seem much smaller. The lanes on Michigan Ave. are also narrow, about a foot each when I paced them off last summer, then most travel lanes in SLC.

I would prefer to see curb separated bike lanes down the middle of a few of the streets. This is far safer for bikers, less conflicts with driveways, turning vehicles, and car doors. Could you image these lanes down State or 700 East through the whole valley? West temple would be good between 900 South and North Temple. You could also get one on 800 South all the way up to the mouth of Emigration Canyon. IT would be a bike commuters dream. But median on some of our streets would go along way.

Utah has way more wide streets than almost any city I have been in...this is relating to the downtown aspect.

I think it is one of the major reasons that the density of the high rise buildings look less impressive than they really are. The blocks are gigantic and the roads (while great for turning oxen around) just apply so much wasted space. Especially when you consider the mass transit options. You lose the center focus that a DT should have.

Of course we cannot change these historic distances but like your Chicago picture and like Park Avenue here in NYC, your admiring the North South divisions with their planting is totally a great idea. An idea that could work very well on State, Main and West Temple and beyond.

Let's face it, very soon, the downtown will adapt (my hope) a downtown sans cars. There will be so many more possible aspect ways. IE, trucks with permits that may deliver and move on. NO CARS!

No point in living downtown in a highrise condo if you don't want lights from the city coming in.

Yeah, if the only housing options downtown are ill-conceived and poorly placed, then there's really no reason to live downtown.

What is it exactly would you be expecting if you lived in a downtown setting? Have you ever lived in a downtown? I lived in a downtown of a large city and one of the reasons I choose to live there is because of what downtown has to offer, the noise, the lights and being in the midst of old and new buildings and the unique character that makes a city what it is. It's amazing what you get used to after a while as far as sounds and lights go, and they simply become just a part of your life and you tend to not notice them anymore. The first month or so I would wake up each tuesday morning about 4 am when the garbage truck would come down the alley to empty the dumpsters six floors below my apartment, and the glowing lights of the nearby arena would occasionally keep me up at first. After a month and a half or so, it was all part of the routine and I grew to like them and actually miss those sounds and lights now that I am back in a single family home.

I personally would love to have a condo that possibly offered me views of the Walker sign or in the Regent with the hopefully soon to return First Security signs viewable from my window. And then just as Urban Boy suggested, if there is a particular night that the flashing or solid blue or red sign bothers you, then you simply close your blinds. Or design it so that the bedrooms face north and south and the living areas face west. It really is all a matter of preference, if you don't want a light in your room, live on the other side, but there are plenty of people out there that would choose to live on the side near the lights.
