hike to Frary Peak. you will get above the flies pretty fast and it's a nice hike, you actually get a decent amount of elevation gain.

I agree, Frary Peak would be a great hike to get you out of the bugs. When we arrived at the island Friday evening around 5:30, there were no bugs.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Gallivan Center's $8 million makeover starts now.

Big-D Construction, the contractor selected for the project, will begin construction at the popular downtown plaza immediately, with completion slated for April 2011, city officials announced Monday.

The project will include a two-story structure along 200 South, an expanded amphitheater and an at-grade skating rink. The outdoor rink will be completed in time for the annual Lights On celebration in November, officials said.

A number of events will continue at the Gallivan Center throughout construction, including Wednesday Rocks and Craft Lake City. The Lunch Bunch concerts also will continue during construction.

The Twilight Concert Series is the biggest casualty of the construction process. The popular summer series will leave its longtime home at the Gallivan in favor of another location, which officials will announce Thursday.

The work never stops. One project after another. Will Gallivan be lit that much as shown on the rendering?

One thing I have found to be attractive is trees that are lit from fixtures at the base in such urban environments.

Ooh, that probably means the Twilight Concert Series will announce the line-up on Thursday too. I bet you it'll be at Red Butte Gardens.

My husband and I went with his parents to Antelope Island on a Sunday evening, late last summer. Luckily we didn't have any problem with brine flies. We saw all the exhibits at the Visitors Center, then headed over to a restaurant on the island where we had tasty bison burgers. I believe the restaurant is located near the trailhead to Frary Peak. Antelope Island can be a great destination. I guess it depends on the season or time of day.

I kind of hope it will be at Pioneer Park, Library Square, or Washington Square.

They did host the Train concert last Thursday and had the area that is going to be remodeled fenced off. They had the stage down on Gallivan Ave, which was sort of a cool place to have it. It allowed people to view if from Gallivan Avenue as well as the west part of the Gallivan Plaza. I think it will be cool if they have it there.

Fox just announced that they did a little digging and have found out that the Twilight Concert Series will move to Pioneer Park.

You know, I was just thinking about the Galliva Plaza today, and I began thinking that it would be great to have a residential tower on the site where Carl's Jr. is...you know, the NW corner of State and 2nd. UB, can you do a quick sketch/image of this? Anyways, the reason, I think a residential tower would be better than an office tower or museum is that the residents facing the Gallivan Plaza can enjoy all the concerts, the winter skating, and all the other festivals from their balconies overlooking the plaza. Don't you think that would be great?, and a huge selling point?

I'm pretty sure those buildings in the background are only concept renderings, but the building in the center is residential, and the building on the corner you suggested is office:

If any of you ever land on TLC while channel surfing, watch for a show called the Little Chocolatiers.. It's about a family in SLC who has a chocolate shop in the Avenues (I think.. called Hatch Family Chocolate). Lot's of great skyline and streets shots of SLC. Kinda cool.

wow. I love that building on Regent street and 200 S. it fits in perfect with the Walker Center, and really makes Gallivan look more urban.

on a similar note; has there been any more talks/plans for a WTC Utah at the Carls Jr. site, or is this project dead?

well, there are such things as blinds.

Just a couple observations. On the west side of 500 E. between 3rd and 4th south they have demolished a building. I can't remember what it was but it's gone now. I've heard nothing about this and whether or not a project has been announced for the site.
Also, the northwest corner of 7th East and 3rd South looks to have some activity on it. It was a few years ago when a developer proposed tearing down a couple historic structures in order to build a residential building, can't remember if it was condos or apartments. We got into a big debate on here about whether or not to save the historic houses as they were in pretty bad shape. A while ago one of them was torn down but the other one hasn't been. It looks like there are a couple backhoes on the site now with surveying ropes and paint and such. So it looks like the plan was probably modified to save one of the houses and now they are moving forward.
this is all the info I have, I'm no insider; just a heads up if anyone else knows anything about these projects they could enlighten us.

No point in having windows if they're just going to be covered with blinds all the time.
