Downtown Salt Lake City is definitely on a very positive roll with it's
urban planning. It's setting, historical beauty, and exciting new projects
keep me coming back. I'm especially upbeat that many positive additions
are progressing so quickly.

This is probably one of my favorite pieces of facade craftsmanship on any structure in the world, and you have
captured it so clearly. Every inch feels multi-dimensional.

First off - Thanks everyone for the great comments.

Precisely - When I booked my room I didn't anticipate how far 500 south really was. I walked around quite a bit while shooting the first day and used the light rail to get back and forth from my hotel (the Sheraton). After that I found myself driving as it was simply easier. Next time I'll stay at the Marriott by the Gallivan.

This was the first thread I've done using my Nikon D90. IMO it's the best DSLR you can buy without going full-frame. I didn't Photoshop anything. Everything I posted was right out of the camera and was shot in JPG. The only program I used was Irfanview to perform lossless JPG rotation. I shot everything as I found it as I only had so much time - I had to shoot at times in the harsh light of mid-afternoon as I wouldn't be returning. The reason I have no interior shots of the Library is that it was closed when I got there, so exterior only. My old Olympus was OK but it was old - it did however force me to learn about exposure, saturation and white balance. As far as lenses go, I chose Nikon in part for their excellent lens selection, particularly the DX lenses they're making. I shot alot of this thread with either a 50mm f1.4 prime or Nikon's fabulous 35mm f1.8 prime lens. If anyone shoots Nikon I would recommend you look into the 35mm. The fast f/1.8 aperture of this $200 lens lets it capture three times as much light as any $1,800 f/2.8 zoom, and five to ten times as much light as any other more reasonable zoom lens. The only downside being that it's a prime lens meaning you have to use your feet to zoom. All my night shots were hand-held with the 35mm as I don't travel with a tripod. Here's a couple of photos I took with the only difference being exposure compensation.

And here's a couple that I thought about including but left out.

I'll take a look and possibly post some others that weren't included as the thread was getting too large.

Again thanks!

I had an inkling you were a Nikon man/woman The quality of your shots is fantastic.
Having used the D90 and D700 myself, I will agree that without going full frame the D90 is definitely one of the best in its class, but if you upgrade consider the D300s. Bigger body, easier to use, and very versatile.
As for using prime lenses, I think they force you to take better photographs and be quicker on your feet.

I've been to SLC once in my life and this photothread just makes me want to return here that much sooner.

Amazing photothread. From a Canadian's perspective, this is one of the most underrated cities in the US I have yet visited.

Best SLC photo thread I have ever seen. I love all the street scenes and the focus on the older architecture. I will be in SLC over Thanksgiving and can't wait to explore downtown and temple square, its been almost 20 years since I last visited.

While in L.A. recently, an attractive British woman commented to me on how surreal the cleanliness of the streets were in Salt Lake. Looking at these pics, I can see what she means.

I seemed to miss this thread when it was first posted. SLC looks great! And the focus of your photos - streetscapes, architecture, & scenery - are precisely what I enjoy seeing most on this forum. From SLC to Denver and Chicago to DC, you've created some very enjoyable photo threads!

Super high quality. Love that ornate and intricately painted theater. Most places that have buildings like that usually don't paint them at all or use just one neutral color.

I know this may sound odd. But does is that nice, very green grass seen in a lot of the photos native to SLC? Or has it been adpoted by nearly all the city? Because I would see other pictures where the grass actually isn't the same variety in SLC's outlying areas. Found that interesting.

Salt Lake City is beautiful. I found myself staring at the mountains when I first saw them. Something I wish OKC had some of.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking, but no, the grass that people plant for lawns here is not native to Utah, and would quickly die if it weren't irrigated. A local forumer (Tmac) posted some pictures this morning from a trip last weekend to Antelope Island, not far from SLC. The landscape there is pretty indicative of what native Utah valleys look like:
