A Face-Lift for Downtown Regina

Downtown Project changes underway

Reported By Bre McAdam
Posted April 11, 2010 - 6:45pm
With spring weather comes the sprucing-up of Regina's downtown.
Mayor Fiacco says the first phase of construction for the Downtown Plan is converting 11th and 12th Avenue to two-way streets, which has already begun.
There's another change people in Regina can get excited about and it's the conversion of 12th Ave. north of Victoria Park in to a piazza. "Cobblestone, park benches, art work, fantastic lighting and a wonderful fountain that can be converted to a stage. There are a number of changes."
Fiacco also tells people to be aware of construction starting on Albert St. from College Ave. to 11th Ave.
I absolutely love how this is sounding. Cobblestone, fountain, art, benches, etc...love it!

Did the sky fall on Minnesota last week when they opened their brandnew $550mil baseball stadium? I think their new football stadium opens soon as well. Man oh man am I glad that chicken littles like you are in the small minority these days.

^ Not really much of a comparison, how do you compare a stadium that will see at least 81 home games per year in a city of 3.5 million to a stadium that will be used 8-10 times a year in a city of only 200,000 people?

8-10 times a year? Are you serious or did you haev a brain fart? You honestly think we would put in extra money for a "MULTI-USE" stadium to only use it 8-10 times a year, which by the way would ONLY be the riders home games at that count. Pathetic arguements like this is what irritates me the most AND he wasn't comparing the stadiums as per size, attendance ect. Just stating that a new stadium is not the end of the world. Yeesh!

^ Okay 12 times a year including the Monster Truck Show which no doubt you would be a big fan of, the annual two day rodeo and the yearly livestock open auction. Happy now?

Haha, you are too funny. I wouldn't be caught dead at a monster truck rally. If it makes you and your arguement feel better to stereotype people then so be it but I wear suits and ties to work daily so I think you got me confused or you are hoping for your arguements sake that I am a truck driving, moster truck going, poor mannered brute that you are arguing against....
Too funny these people and their lame arguements.

Buy a clue. Our stadium will serve over one million people and will have dates far and above what is used for CFL football. You must also include all the concerts (arena and stadium), tradeshows, UFC, monstertrucks, etc......check Fargodome calendar for references to similar events, sometimes having over 100 events in a year. And remember Minneapolis is a city that already has 3 stadiums (Metrodome, Target Field, TCFBank Stadium) and 2 large arenas (Target Center, Xcel Energy Center), and are in the process of building a retractible roof football stadium for the Vikings. Thanks for playing.

I saw a few weeks ago the rendering for the new stadium in Winnipeg. Although not a domed stadium, it certainly looked like a great project and design. It is also being estimated to be one third of the quote for the domed stadium.

I fully support that something needs to be done with Mosaic stadium. As a person who travels to attend events at that facility (primarily Rider Games, but also a few major concerts) I can't support the level of spending required for a domed facility. Let's take a closer look at what Winnipeg is doing and perhaps model our new stadium on that. Then we could use the money saved to establish a rapid transit rail system between Regina and Saskatoon to facilitate ease of travel and a more enviro friendly mode of travel. Neither city will ever (or not for a very long time) be one that exceeds 500,000 in population. We need the 2 cities to combine their economic and population clout to compete with the other large cities in almost every other province. A rapid train connection would help facilitate that.

Do you like how I was able to connect a stadium proposal to rapid rail transit?

^ This post I do like. On the proposed new stadium for the Riders, I hadn't realized that it was a multi-plex being planned. One of the arguments the Vikings are using to get a new stadium in Minneapolis is that they feel football should be played outdoors and that would be a home field advantage. In fact most of the new NFL stadiums have retractable roofs (Indianapolis, Dallas, Houston)

I am in the minority and hope more people realize that once parking lots start disappearing then demand will go up and so will rates!

Is an extra 150 to 200 mill worth is for the retractable roof? I looked over the feasibility study - I don't know why you suggest people read this before commenting on this issue, because it barely has anything of substance in it anyway...

Its the difference between using the stadium for 6 months of the year, or twelve. Also with the indoor option we can now host the big arena concert tours that are too large for the 6,000 seat BrandtCentre.

Not sure why I am considered a troll for asking an honest question. I said that I looked over the feasability study, I did did not read it word for word - I highly doubt that you, or anyone else did either, considering the 300 plus pages that you linked above... However, I have a hard time beleiving that a retractable roof will only cost 45 Million: Here are some recent articles about the costs of retractable roofs:

BC Place, almost 500 Million: http://www.thestar.com/sports/football/cfl/article/715281

Lucas Oil Stadium, 100 Million, plus 1/4 mill roof maintenance yearly...

Minnesota proposed football stadium, 100 mill cheaper with no roof http://wcco.com/local/metrodome.remodeling.plan.2.1375382.html

Milwaukee's cost 50 Mill, ten years ago... http://www.ballparks.com/baseball/national/miller.htm

I'm all for new stadiums in the CFL. I just find it hard to believe that Regina, a city of 200,000 people, can support a facility that costs upwards of 400,000,000. At $2000 a resident, that's a pretty ambitious number... Let me know when the big announcement happens....

The 45 mill was the difference between a fixed roof and a retractable I believe. In order to justify the spending on a new stadium it was decided that a roof would be needed. (Otherwise, it will be used exactly the same as Taylor Field is, and there would be no new gain/advantages to having a new stadium other than to replace one that is bad need of being replaced).

---

Also to the person who suggested rapid transit... Calgary and Alberta are looking into this... and at 1 million in each city and the corridor having perhaps around another 500,000, they are saying it's not really economically feasible at the present time. How can we justify something that would cost in the Billions (yes it would take billions to upgrade the track to rapid transit and to purchase the trains, etc), for a total population of 500,000 tops between the cities when Alberta can't justify it at 5x that number?

The most highly densified portion of Canada (Windsor through Quebec City) and also home to a good 17 million people (over half of Canada) is even having a hard time trying to get something like this further than suggestion.

The money saved by going with a Winnipeg Stadium model vs the one proposed would maybe give us Regina Lumsden Service... perhaps even to Bethune at the very most.

Fair enough. I'll take your word that you read all 300+ pages (although I doubt most others would have read the whole thing). And, I've been to Fargo many times, and the Fargodome does work well there, so I'll give you that. However, it was built for under 50 million (even with inflation, I don't see it coming anywhere close to Regina's facitily). Even the management at FargoDome says that it is extremely hard to operate these types of multi-purpose facilities profitably... I guess I'll just have to sit tight until June...
