The St. Anthony Falls bridge also looks significantly shorter than the South Circle one will be. If the South Circle bridge was shorter but the proposed price was the same, Flatiron probably would have come up with a more aesthetically pleasing structure.

Circle Drive South bridge gets go-ahead; council awards contracts

The Circle Drive South agreement was ratified at a special council meeting Monday amidst predictions the bridge could fundamentally alter the city.

Council awarded the contract for the bridge, freeway, and interchanges to joint-venture Graham Construction-Flatiron Construction Corp. for a guaranteed $224 million, a price estimated to be between $30 million and $40 million under budget.

The price is also $47 million less than any of the other bidders.

The bridge will “unite the city,” said Mayor Don Atchison.

City manager Murray Totland recalled working on the Circle Drive North bridge as a young engineer with the city 30 years ago.

“I thought, ‘I can’t wait to get started on the next one,’ ” Totland said, laughing.

Even two years ago, this bridge was still a “dream” until City Hall focused its collective mind to getting it built, Totland said.

“We didn’t worry about the how’s but we started focusing on the what,” he said.

Coun. Pat Lorje, who was on council for the completion of the Circle Drive North bridge, said this time the city is “doing it right” by consulting with residents up front and doing the entire project at once.

“We’re not doing it piecemeal,” she said.

“We’re not trying to do it incrementally.”

Funny, I was just thinking about Saskatoon neighbourhood names today. Since our full place name is derived from indigenous words ("Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada") I think it would be attractive and unique to use indigenous words, or words derived from them, to name some of our neighbourhoods.

It would be a nod to the first nations history and culture in our city, and it would set us apart. God knows how many "Evergreen"s and "Kensington"s are out there already.

I think Kensington sounds like a great name for a neighbourhood. It's good that it has some history to it as well.

Did you know Evergreen was going to be named Glacial Shores because it "reflects the physical evidence of glacial activity in and around Saskatoon.". I think that sounds very cool and totally unique. Springfield was also a suggestion, but was apparently scrapped due to the inevitable Simpson jokes.

Has anyone else noticed the choice of street names used in Stonebridge?... It seems to me that it got all the 'bottom of the barrel' names, like seriously. Chubb, Laycock, Assaly, to name a few (there are others that don't exactly draw immediate negative connotations, but still sound quite odd or unappealing). None of these sound appealing, and frankly, I think I'd be embarrassed/annoyed at the ensuing laughter or snickering upon telling someone my address if I lived on one of these streets. I can't imagine someone keeping a straight face if I told them I live on Chubb Cove.

And yes, I'm well aware that the names are all honouring previous/current Saskatoon citizens. But perhaps some people should just be honoured with a plaque instead.

I absolutely agree. That would be much more unique and appealing IMO.
I recall hearing rumours of the city renaming Circle Drive (which I am all for) to something indigenous. Not sure what ever happened to that.

Fresh thinking, I love it!

The pessimist in me says such a shift in cultural awareness would be at odds with the thinking of our major neighborhood developers (including the City ).

That's an intriguing proposal.

There's too many streets in this city named after dead, rich, white guys (complete fabrication on my part, but probably not too far from the truth).

Oh, oh, too many comments on recent posts for me to address them all separately, but I have to say this stuff:

"Kensington"? Sheesh... Saskatoon invaded Calgary long ago with its population, now Calgary's invading Saskatoon with its naming convention. Both Evergreen and Kensington are Calgary neighbourhoods (I used to live in Evergreen... in fact there was a sad documentary about the neighbourhood called Radiant City). I'd be all up for indigenous names... My folks used to have a cabin at Turtle Lake and all the lanes up there were named Keewatin, Pasqua, Meota, stuff like that.... even Glacial Shores would be more interesting than Evergreen - obscure Simpsons reference be damned. Deer Lodge sounds like something right outta Calgary too. We need to develop some Saskatoon FLAVA!

Bah, no, the city would have voted it down in favour of a simpler cheaper bridge. Asthetics just don't seem to be on the city's radar. They're better at beautifying city streets and installing planters.

I immediately thought Calgary too, moreso with Kensington though as I had a friend that lived in the area. It's a pretty cool area that will be nothing like our Kensington will inevitably be though heh.

It's a good idea in theory, but unfortunately Cree words don't easily roll off the tongue for the typical anglophone.

I found a relatively easy to pronounce Cree word which aptly describes our approach to suburban design:

"mâyâtisiwin" which roughly translates to "ugly". I say name the next neighborhood Mâyâtisiwin

That's true, which is why I think Cree-derived words (read: "anglocized") would be appropriate and more acceptable. We certainly have a lot of these in Saskatchewan, including our province's namesake itself... and "Saskatoon"... "Waskesiu" comes to mind as well, etc., etc.

It's an idea that's within reach, I think.

You can try. But I should just point out that people in Calgary and Edmonton seem to have defaulted to referring to the new Stoney Trail and Anthony Henday Drive, respectively, as "Ring Road." Too many ex-Reginans in both cities, perhaps.
