It will be open mid-summer 2011, and will most likely not be branded as Cactus Club however.

That's Gaoler's Mews right? (In Gastown). That's a really cool little development.
Thanks!

well, I think I've got the full scoop thanks to the posted articles . . . thanks for those. But what's with all the contradictory comments / information on a rather straight-forward report?

It is, perhaps, a lot harder to open a restaurant than I had imagined. It seemed so straightforward to me

I've been waiting since September for one of my favorite restaurants to open in Calgary, too, near my house.

Life is FULL of disappointments now, isn't it!

No sure if it's been reported but Wally's Burgers of Kingsway fame/infamy has a new owner (bought the rights) and is now in a new storefront in in the Killarney Market complex (yes, where Michael Buble's music video was filmed) on 49th Ave.

Richards on Richard’s spirit reborn on Seymour Street
By Adrian Mack

It’s a few months behind schedule, but the old Richard’s on Richards owners are finally set to reopen their new club, 560, at 560 Seymour Street. Dick’s on Dicks closed on July 19, where it stood for over 40 years before being torn down by developers. Richard’s co-owner Vince Alvaro promised to resurrect the club at the old A&B Sound building on Seymour, with an ambitious three-story makeover that included four lounges and an art gallery. It appears he got what he wanted.

“It all turned out,” Alvaro told the Straight. “We have three dance floors, three different DJ areas, and the whole basement is a 6,000-square-foot unisex bathroom: When you come out of the stall, you’re on a dance floor. And a bar. Which is all made out of concrete.”

Alvaro said they’re down to finishing touches at the club. 560 was given a soft-opening during two private Olympic parties last month, but the new digs will officially welcome the public with a two-night stand starting March 26 from frequently underdressed superstar DJ Honey Dijon. After that, Alvaro promises live music during the week, and dancing on weekends. “That set-up is pretty much the same [as Richard’s],” he said. “The only real difference is on weekends, when it’s full-on nightclub.”

great news about the new Richard's nightclub. 560? not crazy about the new name although no one will ever forget where it is.

i think the location is perfect. the city really should encourage more nightclubs to move right into the financial core somewhere because when they let out at 2am and patrons are drunk and yelling, who's going to hear them? no one..

on another note, there's a Nando's chicken going in the retail at Alto (Davie/Howe). anyone eaten there before? Curious as to what it is.

^ It's a South African chain serving Portuguese(/Mozambiquan) food, specializing in chicken. There are a few around the lower mainland now (Metrotown, Londsdale...) - and it's really, really good. I can't wait for it to open. Great addition to downtown.

I saw them moving some equipment in yesterday so it should be opening shortly!

Love Nandos! There was some discussion on here somewhere in the past . . . seems to have lots of fans who like it as much as I do .

If you want to check it out before the one on Alto opens, the closest current location to downtown is in Kitsalano:

http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/14/1419487/restaurant/Kitsilano/Nandos-Chicken-Kitsilano-Vancouver

That's where I first discovered it. I really love the interior of that location as well. It has a nice contemporary casual atmosphere . . . even has a small outside dining area for when it's nice out.

Looking forward to checking out the new location, as it's closer to home. But I still might make my way over to the Kits location on occasion.

Man, this Nando's is the slowest to open, ever ever ever.

It's been about a year I believe since we were all talking about this "imminent" opening.

If this is anything to go by, Japadog and Nando's have run into the same person at city hall's restaurant licensing division

Am I the only one who thinks it is bizarre to mix the area where we conduct our bodily functions (and all the obnoxious odours and sounds which are emitted there) with a dance floor and bar?

Call me old fashion, but trying to socialize a few feet from where someone is taking a giant, smelly, noisy dump does not sound very sexy.

I'm assuming the stalls have floor to ceiling doors and walls, have strong ventilation and that the music will drown out the noise - if not the smell...
