Has anyone seen Saskatchewan's new Pure ad campaign? I just saw a commercial (on an Alberta station).
The website www.puresk.ca doesn't have a lot of info... but it's linked the Tourism Sask. The video on the site isn't the same as the commercial, just fyi. I can't seem to find the new ad on youtube yet either.

Cool video. They should add video captions though, otherwise no one will know where those featured places are...well, they'll know that they are somewhere in Saskatchewan

Heh, that's exactly what I was thinking! The video was very effective at making me want to be in those scenes... I wonder if some of it was stock footage though. I should contact Sask Tourism to see if they can provide even a partial list of locations.......

I had checked out the Saskatchewan pavillion in downtown Vancouver during my romp there during the olympics.

it was a great campaign for our province with long lineups (like every thing in van during the games) and a great video with Sask scenes and sask musicians. (of course like all our campaigns footage from only in the summer)
There were also 'photo albums' with pics from rider games, brochures on the economy, our natural resources and prairie kite boarding.
Free samples on yogurt covered barley (or something like that) too.
$8 for a cold burnt bison burger tho...

I despise that parking lot too... it's very poorly designed. I hate equally the one at Stonegate - same problem. It's ironic that a company called SmartCentres is responsible for such a crappy parking lot. They made it so you have a lot of vehicles turning in, but are allowed to branch off quickly... and are inevitably stopped by other vehicles backing out of spaces or patrolling for open ones.

Confederation Mall actually has a good setup where cars are forced to drive far into the lot, away from the street. I've never seen a bottleneck there (of course now it's from a lack of customers).

Some of it might be stock, but I think most of it was SK. I messaged their YouTube account asking for a list or that they should add video captions. I'll post their response on here when I get it.

On another note, BHP signage is up on Discovery Plaza.

It doesn't stop at the parking lot... I'd say the poor design extends from mass transit to roadways to buildings to bridges to landfills to hockey arenas to railway crossings to airport baggage pickup to taxi cab contracts to neighbourhoods to commercial zoning etc...

I guess it's because city planners didn't exist until probably a few decades ago.... but the ones now didn't improve the situation much.

Actually city planners are NOT responsible for parking lot layouts in shopping malls. The mall architects/engineers design the parking lots. Can't blame city planners for that. Not that you can't blame them for a whole lot of other bad planning.

The City does have site plan control and can require changes to the layout of parking lots if they see fit.

I've got a question for the local forumers. When I was back in Saskatoon over Christmas, I read in the Star Phoenix that mayor Atch and city council were planning on Saskatoon's growth for the next 50 or 100 years and one of the things he expressed for a future Saskatoon was moving the airport to a different location. He talked about the current runway approaches and how it limited building heights in the downtown core. Does anyone know if this was just talk or are they serious and if so, when would this be taking place? The airport is already planning its next expansion so it seems like a waste if they're going to relocate in the future, why not just begin the site aquisition, planning process, etc for the new airport now?

I would assume if building heights were going to be an issue, they could likely just realign the runways as opposed to moving the entire airport, no?

^ I don't think building heights are a concern here. Not to many developers lining up to build 30+ towers.

No, certainly not right now. But if it's part of the 50 year plan, then it may become an issue then.

I didn't realize it was an issue and that there were height restrictions downtown because of flight paths. But I was just thinking runway realignment would be a better solution than uprooting the entire airport.

Again, this is Don Atchison, and he does dream big! Does anyone on here remember the article in question? It was around Christmas. I also think relocating it seems to be a bit dramatic and a waste of $$ but if it were to happen, where would you guys put it?

Downtown being in a way of the airport makes no sense to me. If you look at a map of the city, the runways don't line up with downtown at all. When was the last time you were downtown and saw a plane flying over you? Whenever I've been on a flight they never even came close to our downtown also when I look out the window the buildings still appear very small and it would be take a fairly large skyscraper to obstruct anything. It's like this is just an excuse for the old timers to not build any tall buildings downtown.

I mean give us something, We're not expecting the Burj Khalifa or The Pentronas Towers but one somewhat tall modern looking building would be nice like every other city in North America.

It happens more often than you think, actually. I work downtown and I've seen/heard a good deal of air traffic over downtown. The flight path seems to pass over the Midtown Plaza site, just on the west side of the Tower and continues NW towards the airport. So yes, the air traffic does primarily seem to keep to the western edge of the CBD, and those planes are still flying higher than any building in our core ...BUT... they're not flying that high... and if something were to happen, if they were to lose control or fly off course there could be some danger there. Sometimes the odd plane looks like it's going to smack into the Tower at Midtown, but of course they never do.

So yes, the air traffic is there. But, could building heights be relaxed in the more eastern portion of downtown? Absolutely, I think so.
