^ Sadly, by turning this into a regional issue, the mayor would look pretty bad by pushing ahead with such a route anyway, given how badly Edmonton needs the regional board to function.

Public Transit should be a regional issue anyway. To an outsider, metro Edmonton having 3 separate transit services (ETS, St. Albert, Strathcona) must look kinda ridiculous.

Taxi commission - same thing. Now's that is what I'd call a clusterfuck.

^I can't tell you about St. Albert Transit but Strathcona County Transit is a joke. I was using it for about a year and a half and i can say hands down ETS buses and service is 10 times better. Including these surrounding counties on even simple decisions is futile and this is a big problem for the City of Edmonton.

Speaking of the debate over public transit to YEG - expect this to rear its ugly head around the time when Southgate and Century Park LRT stations open up to regular service.

Thing is, a 12 months ago, I think was the time when we started to see some significant declines. So, we should be starting to see some improvements. I hope anyway.

The February traffic is not too bad. The only decline is in international traffic and I presume this is all related to changes in the "Sun" charter business.

As we know, there are fewer charter flights this winter. Conquest Tours is gone, and Signature and Sunquest are not running any of their own charters this year, putting their customers on Transat flights instead. There are thus no Skyservice flights at all from Western Canada this year (so far as I know).

This does not mean demand is down. The tour business has lots of challenges on the national and international level. We still want to go on vacation, but with no flights we have to stay home. The numbers will go up next winter if the flights come back. I have not noticed many last minute deals this year in the West so it must be possible to make a profit.

My opinion.

^The term "deal" is relative. I think there have been good deals this year.

I don't have specific info in terms of aircraft flying to Sun destinations but is it really that different? I believe AC added Montego Bay this year for the first time. WestJet always seems to be adding flights to Hawaii or Mexico. Sunwing has had a steady amount of flights. Air Transat and Canjet aircraft have handled Air Transat Holidays, Signature Vacations and Sunquest.

From the article about Air Transat having a bad winter season becasue of Air Canada and WestJet heavy competition, it seems like there are/were many options.

I'm thinking that the YEG-LHR run during the winter hasn't been that great. Saying that, i like seeing United, Lufthansa, British Midland and Jet Airways codesharing on the route. Maybe a YEG insider can say if there are actually any connections through YEG on this flight.

I dont get it. Yes the AC-LHR is codeshared with bmi, but go on to their website and you cant select Edmonton? So, what is the point of codesharing? Or am I completely missing something?

US Airways is pulling mainline service again for the summer (replacing 319 with CR9).
This will leave the daily CO flt to IAH as the only mainline US carrier flight to the US.
In addition, the 2 daily Westjet flights means only 3 mainline flights to the US daily.
All remaining flights to the US are going to be regional flyers.
Interesting showing that transborder is the only area showing growth, yet capacity in 2010 will be lower than 2009.

Wonder who EIA is expecting to utilise all the new gates in the transborder area?

I assume that reducing the size of metal is to cut costs. This isn't just a YEG phenomenon. Finding seats on US flights to and from YEG is often tough.

While I agree mainline metal is probably better, you cannot discount that multiple flights a day on regional jets give the same number of seats with more flexibility in times. Would you rather have 1 mainline a day go to SFO, ORD, etc or 2 CRJ flights flights per day? 2 mainline or 4 CRJ's to MSP per day? If the available seats are similar, I rather have the choice of multiple flights to get to my destination when I want or for flexible connecting. Wouldn't more CRJ flights require more gates to be used compared to mainline metal?

Hopefully Westjet adds more flights as well, they start SFO 3 x weekly in early May and also fly numerous flights to LAS, LAX, PHX, etc (Newark would be awesome).
