I can only assume you're talking about this variety of housing... Which would be lower end new housing in Stonebridge.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s...TatxkGZW5Y-3uqIew&cbp=12,352.78,,0,-1.33

Here's some middle/upper of the pack homes in Briarwood:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s...6,-106.561659&spn=0.001575,0.004823&z=18

Then there's some higher end housing in The Willows:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s...5,-106.650145&spn=0.003152,0.009645&z=17

Then of course there's the condos, town homes, and apartments.
I think we have all the variety...

You mean ghettos. Those areas will soon be infested with drug dealers and retirees.

You're not studying architecture? I meant it's great to have another Stoon member and as an added bonus you're studying architecture.

Luxe

..... and work continues on the Luxe. You have to love those remote control lifts. I was itching to give it a try.
Good to see the worker was wearing a safety line.

haha, #3...new life via shots of a cemetery, ahem, a dynamic cemetery (better than a 2nd Ave summer street scene ).

I haven't spent much time there, but I must say the Woodlawn Cemetery is one of the more surreal places in this city (it's the arrangement of mature trees, untouched (except for hare tracks) snow covered ground, and quietness that really sets it apart). Simply overlook the presence of the graves and it ranks as one of Saskatoon's finest parks.

It certainly is a beautiful park like setting and we have had many a person comment on the beauty of the mature trees and the drive along memorial avenue.

Architecture college idea gaining steam

By David Hutton, The StarPhoenix
February 25, 2010

A Saskatchewan school of architecture is moving beyond the brainstorming stage and accelerating fast toward a blueprint that could see the college built in downtown Saskatoon.

"It was just an idea last summer. Now it's an idea that's been recognized as something that could really make a difference," said Charles Olfert, regional director of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

"I could see this in two to three years, potentially, and I might have said five to 10 years last summer."

Olfert will deliver a chamber of commerce-sponsored talk with university architect Colin Tennent, titled It's Time for a Saskatchewan School of Architecture, today at noon at the Sheraton Cavalier. It will examine the economic impact a college of architecture could have.

Saskatchewan has a dearth of architects, Olfert said, which means out-of-province firms that are hired bring with them a preference for products they know.

"Based on my experience in the industry, I estimate (we're losing) $20 (million) to $30 million per year because we have a shortage of architects," Olfert said.

"(Out-of-province) architects tend to specify products they know . . . and that takes away from local suppliers in the process."

One of the ideas that has been floated, but would require city hall support, is locating the school in a renovated city-owned John Deere building in the warehouse district once 25th Street is extended to Idylwyld Drive.

Locating 300 to 400 students in downtown Saskatoon would provide a $3-million to $4-million per year economic benefit once the program is underway, Olfert estimates.

A feasibility task force struck by the council of the Saskatchewan Association of Architects in early 2008 to study the creation of a program said a school would fit well in either Regina or Saskatoon.

Tennent, who chaired the task force, said an undergraduate architecture program at the U of S would likely focus on aboriginal architecture.

"It's an area of study that's sadly lacking," he said.

Since summer, there have been discussions of working with the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science & Technology and a possible undergraduate program focused on construction management at the University of Regina.

Tennent would like to see a provincial group lay out the vision for the college, including the curriculum, program requirements and costs.

"To me, it's really quite stunning that we're progressing as rapidly as we are," he said. "There's an outstanding demand for architecture education right now and it doesn't appear it's going to slow any time soon."

This isn't a Saskatoon trend - nor is it entirely environmental. It's cheaper for both developer and purchaser to have smaller lots and tighter packed houses - this is what suburbia has turned into, and why there are bidding wars happening right now with houses in places like South Nutana Park, where lots are 50 years old and huge.

Anyway, I think living more tightly like that will be tolerable if there are parks and open public spaces, and business and office mixed in. I don't live in Erindale anymore, but I used to visit Willowgrove next door to see what was happening.... lots and lots and lots of condos and low-end chicken coop homes, but the most interesting area of the neighbourhood, the proposed "town square" sat empty, waiting for a business developer to put some strip malls in place. If those strip malls would actually house a few more offices than just a neighbourhood dental and eyecare place, it'd be fine living in that burb - the dream of a walkable community might someday take shape there... if only people weren't so conditioned to drive their cars already. People currently live in Willowgrove and work downtown or somewhere else, making Attridge a busy place in the mornings. And those who aren't conditioned like that probably don't want to live in Willowgrove anyway...... sigh.

Here's the glossy video (wmv) that spells out the dream of Willowgrove....we'll see what shape it eventually takes.

For the non-Windows folks out there, you can find a QT version of the same at http://www.saskatoon.ca/DEPARTMENTS/Comm...grove/Pages/WillowgroveUrbanVillage.aspx

The John Deere building is a great candidate for reuse. I can't imagine why the city would object. They conveyed support during last years public presentation by The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada

300-400 students though? That'd be impressive if it attracted that many students. In 2007, the average number of students admitted to first-year by schools of architecture in Canada was 69.8 (97% retention rate) Source.

Wishful thinking maybe, but it could act as a catalyst for that area of downtown towards becoming a neighborhood for the creative design industry (Stantec and Zu need some neighbors).

U of S Receives Donation
Friday, 26 February 2010

The Nasser family has made a large donation to the University of Saskatchewan.

The gift-in-kind consists of two properties in Saskatoon:

The Vienna Building on the corner of 20th Street and 3rd Avenue South, which houses the Edwards School of business K.W. Nasser Centre, and the upper three floors which have 30 apartment units.

And the Idylwyld Apartments - three buildings on Idylwyld Drive North. Two of the buildings have 77 apartments, and the third building has almost 13-thousand square feet of commercial space.

The total current market value of these properties is 18-million dollars.

The university has accepted the two properties from the Nasser family, and issued the family a 6-million dollar payment, which results in a net gift-in-kind of 12-million dollars.

Until a decision on whether to keep or sell the buildings is made, Victory Agencies, a company owned by the Nasser family, will remain the property management company.

Damn, I wanted to slam North Ridge again

I like how the U of S is diversifying their revenue sources (I can't imagine what their targets are).

I'm thinking these are the brown brick buildings behind the Ramada. Those are worth part of the 18 million? Really?

I just hope the U of S does something with the exterior of the Vienna Boutiques.
