I noticed yesterday that French had been added to the "Welcome to Vancouver" signs as you drive into the city. With the "host city, blah blah blah" at the bottom as well.

Aren't these the same people that arrive in Washington DC, and try to find Seattle on the subway map?

There was a discussion earlier about Cineplex having the Olympics TV coverage in their theatres across Canada - but not in Vancouver.

The Vogue Theatre on Granville St now has TV coverage of the Olympics on their big screen every day. I noticed their street sign when Canada was thumping Norway, but with only 3 minutes left in the game I wasn't interested in going in at the time.

Not sure if they have beer & food during the shows, but I'll check them out next time I'm downtown.

LOS ANGELES - NBC's coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics beat "American Idol" on Wednesday, ending a six-year unbeaten streak for the Fox television ratings juggernaut, according to early audience figures on Thursday.

Nielsen Media figures showed that 30.1 million Americans watched the NBC action from Vancouver in the 9-10 pm hour on Wednesday, compared to 18.4 million who watched the "American Idol" TV singing competition on Fox at that time.

It's the first time that "American Idol", now in its 9th season, has been beaten in U.S. TV audience ratings since May 2004.

that should help NBC sell advertising space...

Perhaps Simon is leaving because he knows this show is long past its 15 seconds of fame?

Has anyone missed Canadian Idol since it was canceled?

Haha I didn't even know it had been cancelled!
Wasn't Sass Jordan a judge on this? She's okay, I guess.

Saw Martin Brodeur with his wife and kids at Robson Square All the kids were wearing Brodeur jerseys

He'll be in net today for Canada, as we try to avenge our devastating shutout loss to Switzerland at the last Olympics, which sent us spiraling out of the tournament

Also hung out with Evander Kane last night lol, I think we were the only people who knew who he was. We asked him if he played for Atlanta and he said "Uhh... yeah..."

Not used to being spotted, yet, I guess. Must NEVER happen in Atlanta.

Some of my pics from the Czech vs. Slovakia game lastnight. Definitely the game of the tournament so far. The atmosphere was fantastic with so many Czech and Slovakia fans, going at eachother with spirited cheers. The players were actually legitimately trying quite hard, as well. Jaromir Jagr was FANTASTIC. If he ever makes an NHL come back in the next year or so, he deserves the maximum. This man has not lost his game, at all. Absolutely schooled the Slovaks. Can't wait to see him go against Ovechkin tomorrow.

Sorry about the vertical-ness. I wish GM Place had the wider glass that some arenas have. The partitions are massive.

VANCOUVER — There’s an irony that the greatest curling competition on the planet will be played in a building that wouldn’t be considered suitable to host a Brier.

But that’s not the point of the Vancouver Olympic Centre, said the president of the World Curling Federation on Sunday during the first on-ice practices.

“What would we do with 15,000 seats? Hey, it’s at least twice the size of any venue we’ve ever had for our fourth Olympic Games, so we’re doing pretty good,” said Les Harrison, a Canadian. “I would have loved to see 15,000 seats and the place sold out and rocking every day. But we all have to realize that curling goes on for 12 days of round-robin and playoff games, and you’re not going to fill a 15,000-seat arena unless you give away the tickets.”

Well, that’s a matter of opinion. Considering tickets go for $65 per game, a bigger building could have resulted in lower prices. And besides, noted Canadian Curling Association director of event operations and media Warren Hansen, if you can attract 15,000 to Brier games, why couldn’t you do the same thing at the Olympics?

“With the Olympics in Canada and the strength of curling in this country, I have little doubt that you would fill any size of building you provided,” said Hansen. “So it would give more people across this country the opportunity to access the event and set the benchmark for the future of curling at the Olympic level.”

And that’s a real concern, considering the venue for Sochi, Russia, in 2014, is a temporary 3,000-seat venue, with the added “bonus,” according to the host website, of being portable and moved anywhere in Russia should there be a demand.

Still, the Vanoc priority is a sustainable legacy, and the VOC fits the bill; afterwards, the curling venue will be converted to a smaller hockey rink, and the spectator concourse will become the new home of the Vancouver Curling Club. The community centre also will feature a swimming pool.

Also appealing is the location — close to downtown, close to the action, as opposed to previous Olympic curling venues that were an hour or more away from the host city.

“We’ve longed for that over the last three Olympic Games,” said Harrison. “We wanted to be close to the action, close to the IOC, close to the sponsors, so that they can come to the venue and see what they’ve developed along with us. We’re excited about it.”

The players had nothing but glowing praise for the venue as they got their first official look on Sunday (there will be another day of practice on Monday before the first round of curling competition Tuesday morning).

“I think the venue is awesome,” said Team Canada lead Ben Hebert. “When you walk in and see the Olympic colours and it’s decorated so nicely — you know what? It’s nice to play in the big buildings, but it’s a guarantee that this building is going to be sold out, right? And with the fans so close to you, it makes it that much more intimate. It’s a quality, quality facility.”

“I think everybody would have liked to play in a 15,000 or 20,000-seat arena because I’m sure Canada could have filled it and it would have been great to show around the world,” added British skip David Murdoch. “But we’re going to have sellouts, it’s tight and I think it’s going to be a noisy stadium. And it definitely feels like an Olympic venue.”

I am a *gasp* curling fan. I must admit that I was disappointed that the venue for curling was so small. I have been to many a brier and cheered among 15k people. But I understand that the legacy would not be sustainable. I thought maybe a medium sized arena could be constructed with one of the universities other than UBC but I guess not. Oh well notthe end of the world.

Supposedly the Canada vs. Norway game was the very first Olympic hockey game to be broadcast in China, and over 20 million people watched. Hockey is becoming popular there, and the New York Islanders will be playing some exhibition games in Beijing this Summer. Can you imagine opening the hockey market to a Country that big? And the fool Gary Bettman doesn't want the NHL to be in the 2014 Olympics...

I'm beginning to think he doesn't know a thing about business As if letting franchises continue to fail in Phoenix, Atlanta, etc. wasn't enough proof.

Even if you can find a small % fringe group in China who likes hockey, that is A LOT of people.
