For all those interested Ben Rutledge, the 2008 Olympic gold medal rowing champion, is at Holland Park now signing autographs and taking pictures. Not sure how long he is going to be there though.

Another fisheye shot from today. What can I say, I'm addicted to this lens

Finland defeated Belarus 5 - 1.

Speaking of hockey, a whole whack of hockey tickets have been released for the next few days, including Canada vs. Swiss tomorrow.

Tonight, I was able to share Canada's silver short track speed skating with lots of people at the Pacific Centre. Everybody was just stopping by the TVs in the hall and watching the games and chatting with total strangers.

It was magical and I love it

@ Yume:

That picture brings back memories of the Memorial Cup in 2007. Two hockey teams that hardly anyone has any interest in, yet GM Place was packed. At the Colliseum in 2007, I remember when Lewiston played Plymouth. Two Americans teams from the OHL and QMJHL, that no one from BC has really heard of, yet there was still 12,500 fans whatching... It's amazing. The women's games down at T-Bird are the same.

There were a lot of Finland fans, there Tonight Slovakia vs. Czech was a GREAT atmosphere, so many people from both Countries, and oh, are they bitter rivals

The crowd of locals is funny, though. They tend to really pull for the underdog, give Latvia, Belarus, etc. some cheers and chants!

Atmosphere wise, the arena is awesome. Much different from an NHL game. Everyone is pretty cheerful and nice, and the competition is spirited but respectful.

That's the best part of International Hockey. I really should of bought tickets lol, I'd of loved to see that Russia vs. Latvia game.

from the montreal gazette

Vancouver is host

The GazetteFebruary 18, 2010 3:03 AM

How sad that these Winter Olympics are being used by those so desperate to seize headlines and promote their own agendas.

We should not forget that the host of these games is the city of Vancouver, not the country of Canada. Canadian athletes and spectators are guests of the Games as much as those from any other part of the globe.

Vancouver is far from being a French-speaking city, and it is to its credit that most announcements are made first in French rather than the one truly international language English.

Vancouverites should be commended for putting on a magnificent show.

@Sponge:

I see what he's trying to say, but French is still our 2nd language... It's only natural that all announcements speak both languages. Didn't Beijing'08 do the same thing, only in Cantonese/Mandarin and English?

hes saying that the politicians whining in quebec have no reason to whine as french is being used and i think one of them has retracted or changed his criticismof his earlier remarks

I believe all games use english french and the host country language some countries have announcements in 3 languages

I've been told that IOC rules state that french and english are mandatory for all Olympic signage, announcements, &tc. Local language -if necessary- can be used too.

I was at Czech vs Slovakia tonight as well. I was hoping for a bit more fighting, but it was a good game overall.

I was sitting next to a family from Slovakia with some small kids. I got in to the flag waving with them They had one of the big ones.

We couldn't get the attention of the camera to get on the screen, though

I see lots of OR's still going down in speed skating, short track.

Also, NBC just broadcast a replay of the snowboarding. Nice to see the event was a success, and Shaun White won... of course
