News from U of S

"The University of Saskatchewan, the Province of Saskatchewan, Meridian Development Corp. and the City of Saskatoon marked the beginning of construction today on the new student residence in College Quarter. Located south of College Drive and east of Cumberland Avenue, the new student residence will provide housing for 400 undergraduate students when completed.

The building design unveiled this morning is now online at www.usask.ca/studentresidenceproject. Please visit this site for more details about the project and updates as the construction continues."

Not construction related, but Saskatoon has topped another cities list. Apparently we're the Most Romantic City in Canada, according to Amazon.

It looks like you could park a Motor home in one of those parking spots and still have room for your ATV's/Seadoo's/Snowmobiles on a trailer.

The 2 significant sources of information regarding the College Quarter Master Plan that I can find on the U of S's website are:

http://www.usask.ca/corporate_admin/real_estate/index.php#Quarter

neither of which contains the actual master plan. I have contacted the U of S contact for the project to find out if the master plan is available somewhere for download.

I heard Costco is going to build in Stonebridge, as they need two stores to handle all the business. Has anyone heard this.

^ Ohh, that would be great. I've been thinking that for months they should build one there. Our Costco always seems to be packed, no matter what day or time. Where did you hear that?

Uptown Market looks to be coming along nicely. Across the street, the Taj Mahal looks great.

When the new Walmart opened in Blairmore, the signs went up for the Royal Bank, Subway, Reitman's, Penningtons, Dollarama and Sleep Country. Nice store for those who haven't been there, even has a Tim Hortons in it.

Wow. Clone of Stonebridge much? Why can't they get some stores new to the city?
I wouldn't exactly call the Blairmore Walmart Supercentre 'nice'. It's definitely massive. I do like the design of the the exterior of the building (as far as Wal-marts are concerned) and the Tim Horton's is a nice touch.

I heard when the City was pushing for Walmart to go into Stonebridge (and pay for part of the overpass), Walmart asked the city to not build any other grocery stores. Is this true? Can they even do that? As long as zoning allows for a certain use, I don't think the city can impede. Regardless, that was just a rumour I had heard and thought of it with the topic of Costco.

Graham construction just got awarded the south bridge project, as well, PCL was in the midst of putting up their new crane at the university for their new project, credit to the guys who put those bad boys up!

I took a few pictures at the U of S this weekend. I didn't bother with taking pics of the big hole on the other end of health sciences, but like Kiwi, I saw the new crane going up today so these might be less interesting now, but I'll post them anyway. I added a few of the older campus buildings to compare the modern stonework to the old stuff.

Paris is for lovers – the Paris of the Prairies, that is.

The online retail giant Amazon.ca has named Saskatoon this country’s most romantic city, placing just ahead of Calgary and Victoria.

It’s a welcome distinction for the Saskatchewan city that is perhaps better known as Canada’s most violent metropolis.

“It makes sense,” says local comedian Dez Reed, father of nine children. “You could cash out at any moment here, so we live our romantic lives to the fullest. What could be more romantic than having your wife standing over you while you bleed out into the snow?”

Certainly the city is well endowed with striking bridges, a cute downtown core and quaint riverside strolls, but what about the cold?

“We tend to be more snuggly here,” said Mr. Reed, who lived in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto before settling in Toon-town.

But a closer inspection of Amazon’s questionable criteria – sales data of romance novels, sex books, rom-com DVDs and Michael Bublé CDs – suggests Saskatoon may be more lovelorn than lovestruck.

With that in mind, the romantically inclined may be better advised to visit the amorous locale that placed last on the 20-city list. Because nothing says romance like a trip to Windsor, Ont.
