That is true but 31-13 is the main runway so it would make more sense to have a parallel runway in that direction to cut down on crosswinds. With Taylor field running in the same direction, that tells me most of the winds prevail from SE or NW.

A quote from Fiacco that needs to be tattoo'd on the forehead of so many people. (referring to the cost of the new branding)

"It's the cost of doing business. Cities who do nothing, get nothing.''

Regina for a long time was a city that did nothing, and got nothing. It's unfortunate that there are so many "smart people" who are okay with that.

It's about time Regina started being a leader and doing more than just the bare minimum. Hence why the GTH and the stadium are such refreshing projects.

My father travelled frequently when I was a kid. Once I had my driver's license, I would pick him up from the airport. I never checked his flight status. I just waited for the big Air Canada jet to roar overhead and then drove to the airport. I was always there by the time he arrived in the terminal.

Regarding prevailing winds, I would suggest 80% of the time they are SE or NW. Most people don't realize this but SE is the prevailing wind direction in Regina for every month except January. Most people think it is NW.

United Airlines to fly nonstop between Regina and Chicago

By Leader-Post staffFebruary 10, 2010 4:13 PM

United Airlines will begin flying twice daily between Regina and Chicago on June 9.

REGINA — United Airlines will start non-stop service between its home base of Chicago and Regina, starting June 9, the Regina Airport Authority announced Thursday.
United will use the Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) 700, which has six executive -class and 64 economy-class seats to make two flights a day.
This is the first nonstop service between the two cities.
Regina Airport Authority president and CEO Jim Hunter said the announcement of United's non-stop service to Chicago is "good news" for Regina and area travelers.
"United's continued confidence and commitment to the Regina market is a reflection of our current economic strength and our customers' demands for more flexible and frequent transborder service," Hunter said in a news release.
Mathew Friebe, managing director of North America schedule planning for United Airlines, said the airline is "extremely pleased with the support Regina and southern Saskatchewan have given our Regina to Denver service."
"We look forward to further building on that success with these flights in co-operation with the Regina Airport Authority," Friebe said.
A tentative schedule calls for one of these flights to depart Regina at 8:30 a.m. CST and reach Chicago at 11:50 a.m. local time.
Another flight will leave Chicago at 5 p.m. and reach Regina at 6:37 p.m. CST, after which the aircraft and crew will "overnight" in Regina.
United currently serves Regina with two daily non-stop departures to Denver.
With more than more than 600 daily departures, United's operation at Chicago's O'Hare Airport is its largest hub.
Only last week, rival Delta Air Lines announced it was doubling its two daily flights between Regina and Minneapolis-St. Paul to four flights.

Looks like it's actually one flight per day, but more good news for YQR nonetheless. I would think their next announcement will be a direct Ottawa flight.

'Infinite Horizons' did not replace 'I Love Regina' slogan: Fiacco

Mayor Pat Fiacco standing next to the I Love Regina sign in front of City Hall.
Photograph by: Roy Antal, Leader-Post

REGINA — The City of Regina's relationship with the "I Love Regina" campaign has not come to an end, contrary to reports this week from some broadcast media outlets, Mayor Pat Fiacco said Wednesday.

"We did not intend to confuse anybody or give people the impression that 'I Love Regina' was going away," he said, referring to Monday's launch of a new brand for the city, including the slogan "Infinite Horizons."

Some media outlets indicated "I Love Regina" was being replaced.

Fiacco called one broadcast media outlet on Tuesday to insist a report be clarified. He said he thinks the problem stems from "an assumption that 'I Love Regina' was our brand."

Actually, pitting "I Love Regina" against "Infinite Horizons" is an apples-to-oranges-type comparison, he said.

"I Love Regina" always has been a community promotion to encourage residents to have pride, he said.

In contrast, "Infinite Horizons" is targeted at people who don't consider Regina home.

Focus group participants in other cities were asked about "I Love Regina," and it didn't resonate with them, Fiacco said, but "Infinite Horizons" did.

"'Infinite Horizons' is going to get people here. "'I Love Regina' is going to keep people here," the mayor said.

Still, materials coming out of Regina City Hall going forward will feature the "Infinite Horizons" slogan. So the use of the "I Love Regina" logo by city hall effectively will be reduced. The community will drive use of "I Love Regina" into the future.

"The corporate brand as we move forward is, no question, going to be 'Infinite Horizons'," Fiacco said. "But there's no question that 'I Love' will continue to be around. For people that still want to buy the T-shirts, they're still going to be able to get them."

Organizations can use either logo — or both — where appropriate, he noted, adding a new version of "I Love Regina," featuring the text style of the new branding initiative, will be introduced in the next few months.

Since "I Love Regina" came out of the mayor's office eight years ago, people have thanked Fiacco for the campaign, which allows them to talk about why they love Regina, he noted.

"Obviously, the community, in my opinion, needed it," he said, noting a transfer in the ownership of the campaign. "And they've embraced it. It will be theirs for as long as they want it to be. We're not abandoning it. . . . The community took it over."

Sales of merchandise and private-sector support have long driven the campaign, a fact that further distinguishes it from other types of initiatives. So, even without the same level of backing from city hall, "I Love Regina" will endure.

"Infinite Horizons" might one day be embraced like "I Love Regina." It's "going to take some time for some people" to warm to the new slogan, Fiacco said.

"I remember when we first launched 'I Love'. People said, 'Oh that's not going to work,' or, 'Why are you doing that? We don't need that.' Now, they don't want to lose it — and they're not going to lose it," the mayor reiterated, noting he does think "Infinite Horizons" is "a real winner."

There is some love implicit in the new branding strategy, as evidenced in some of the videos available on its website (www.infinitehorizons.ca). The videos feature beautiful images of the city and unscripted testimonials from residents.

Combined, they are intended to bring out warm feelings about Regina from residents and non-residents alike. It is especially important to appeal to outsiders, and the city is ahead of the curve in terms of cities rebranding themselves after uncertain economic times, said Fiacco, who encouraged residents to show the videos to anyone who might be considering relocating to Regina.

He compared the more modern look of the new strategy to how the stylized script "Regina" logo looked when it was created in 2000, noting that logo looks dated now. It's important to keep the look of the city's branding elements up-to-date.

"It's ongoing progress," he said. "This is all about momentum and ensuring that we continue with that momentum."

Air Canada charts course for global growth
By Scott Deveau

Air Canada plans to increase its domestic network by 1.5% to 2.5% this year.
Photograph by: Canwest News Service, Canwest News Service

Air Canada is plotting an aggressive international expansion this year, as its dogfight in the domestic market is expected to remain fierce.

The country’s largest carrier said Wednesday it will grow its network by up to 6% this year, despite continued softness in the economy and passenger demand. The bulk of those added seats will be on international routes, the carrier said.

International air travel has been hit much harder than domestic travel during the recession, and analysts expect a sharper rebound on those routes.

Several U.S. and foreign carriers have reported that their international business is picking up again. Air Canada, whose network shrank by more than 4% last year, has already announced plans for service to Athens and Barcelona this summer, reinstated its service from Toronto to Tokyo, and bulked up its flights to China to take advantage of an expected rebound there.

Management said Wednesday it has also been heartened by the amount of high-yield, premium traffic originating in the U.S. Northeast and travelling through its hub in Toronto en route to Asia.

Air Canada is also putting a lot of stock in its new “A++” joint venture with Lufthansa, Continental and United airlines — where the bulk of its capacity growth in 2010 will go — that will see the foursome collaborate on marketing and sales across the Atlantic.

“The main growth focus will be on the international,” said Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada’s chief executive, on a conference call. “However, to do that business properly we need to have a substantial Canadian business [to help feed the network].”

The perennial problem of excess capacity in the domestic market, however, remains, said Ben Cherniavsky, Raymond James analyst.

Air Canada plans to increase its domestic network by 1.5% to 2.5% this year, while its main rival WestJet Airlines Ltd. is to grow by up to 10%. Add in Porter Airlines’ expansion, and the domestic market could see capacity increases of up 6% in 2010, Mr. Cherniavsky said.

With the economy still fragile and traffic only slowly improving, it's unlikely that domestic demand will keep pace to fill those seats, he added.

“We could get 10% capacity growth this year, if we gave seats away. But it’s about profitable growth, and I don’t know if we’re going to see that in the domestic market,” he said. “I’m much more optimistic about Air Canada’s international opportunities.”

The news comes as Air Canada’s fourth-quarter loss shrank to $56-million, or 62¢ per adjusted share, compared with a loss of $726-million a year ago.

But while yields remain under pressure as the carrier cut fares to stimulate the demand, the 7.2% drop was less severe than in previous quarters.

Air Canada also exceeded its target to improve profitability by $50-million in 2009, and remains on track to meet, or exceed, its goal of improving revenue and costs by $500-million by 2011, management said.

“While 2010 promises to be yet another challenging year for our industry, we’re entering the year in a more stable financial position,” Mr. Rovinescu said. “Despite some positive economic indicators out there, we expect a slow recovery, which makes it all the more critical that we accelerate the execution of our business plan.”

I'm shure that many share in your unbridled enthusiasm for these new projects, but what you speak of (this branding) is not what is going to define us as as a City or leader among others. To say that this city did nothing for a long time is a bit of an insult to the people that truly attempt to make this city better. Unfortunatley to much praise and admoration is given to those who draw attention to themselves when they should be showing more humility within their public positions.

13th Ave Safeway

So the other day when I was at Safeway, one of the managers was working at the till, so I asked him about the expansion. He confirmed that Safeway bought the entire building and that construction is set to start this year. They will also remain open during construction.

Judging by the maps I've seen (Harbour Landing included), it looks like there would still be plenty of room for a runway to parallel 13-31. At one time though I think the airport mentioned a plan to extend that runway to about 9,100 feet from its current length of 7,900 feet (correct me here if I'm wrong). I don't see a real need for a 3rd runway in the near future at YQR. Then again, one never knows at the rate things seem to be happening!

Not a chance. Air Canada has shown little interest in serving Regina. As a result, WestJet, Delta and United are having a field day here. Technically Air Canada does not even fly into Regina. All its flights are through Jazz, which is a separate company, or codeshares through United.

I would be very surprised if AC is smart enough to see the opportunity in Regina given their recent history here.

Actually, Air Canada flies 3 Embraer aircraft to and from Toronto to Regina every day and has done so since November 2009. Besides this, AC does all the network scheduling for Jazz (as well as pay all fuel bills) and employs 35 Air Canada mainline employees here (20 Jazz)

Awesome news about Southlands Multi-Million dollar reno. Having moved back from Edmonton and seeing what they did with the major renos of 2 of their malls (Southgate Mall & Kingsway Garden Mall ... you can google them to see the impressive results) ... I couldnt wait to see at least one of our sadly outdated malls upgraded. Especially Southland mall and its Miami Vice pink and aqua green

P.S. I think Northgate needs a reno even more than Southland due to the fact of how empty and sad it feels every time i am in there. Southland for all of its outdated decor has a vibrant feel to it and is rarely dead, especially on the weekends. Just compare the 2 foodcourts and thats where you'll see a HUGE difference. And I don't believe Southland was full ONLY because of Walmart, it may have helped but IMO is not a definitive factor but only time will tell and what better way to counter losing Walmart shoppers than by renovating and causing a stir in the community to "check out" the renovated mall.

Oops, my bad. Thanks for the correction. I am a few month out of date. I actually saw one of those Embraers at the airport 2 weeks ago and I was wondering what it was doing there.

The point of my post was that Air Canada has underserved Regina for years. I sure hope the Toronto flights are a sign that they are now moving in the other direction.

I think we can expect to see a non-stop flight to Ottawa from Air Canada within the next couple of months.

Sorry....that should have read since November 2008 for the Embraers. The other aircraft may belong to Jazz, but the customers all belong to Air Canada.
