I just passed by Walmart Supercentre location earlier this afternoon, via Lewvan Dr. I don't think they're open yet, but there sure are a lot of cars (and not all service vehicles) in that parking lot! I'm guessing they're running staff orientation and training??!! Anyone know the date for opening? I heard mid-February. (Sorry if I've missed a few headlines! We're busier these days with ! )

Regina will sure look great with some construction cranes marking upcoming projects and a new stadium if all goes well with that!

The Four Points Sheraton will be a nice addition to the hospitality inventory in Regina. We stayed at the one in Calgary, by Olympic Park on the west side.

Does anyone know any details of the Diocese project? I'm curious to know what's happening with the existing buildings and what they have planned in addition to the residential. Any clue as to what sorts of businesses will locate there? Restaurants, retail, etc?

I was also wondering when the Plains is set to be demolished and when 12th Ave construction will start? I am assuming the block north of Victoria Park will be close off to traffic for the summer.

Plains

On 01-06-2010 I called the Plains and asked how long the hotel was open for and when the pub would close.

They said the hotel was already closed and the pub would be open for two more months.

Take a look. They are putting the exterior finish on some of the first large condo complexes. Also the condo's in St. Chads are available. Hmm wait, maybe it was just a show suite that was open in St. Chad's. Either way it's well into the project.

Yeah, I saw the condos in St. Chad's, I'm more curious as to what is happening with the rest of the exisiting buildings. The smaller ones that aren't even named on the map. And I saw a bunch of mixed use buildings in there. I was also wondering what was planned for those buildings.

I had the treat of seeing the updated blueprints and renders for the new Douglas park, Arcola, and Wascana/Herchmer Schools yesterday.

These are going to be fantastic looking buildings. Gone are the days of cindercrete block, bells in cells looking schools. Loads of natural light, open air classrooms (yes outside) davinci studios, student commons, indoor play grounds. Loads of great forward thinking designs incorporated into these schools.

Rumor has it sod turning for the new Arcola and Douglas Park schools should happen in the next few weeks.

Strong start to construction
The Leader-Post February 3, 2010

Crews from Wright Construction Western Inc. work on a $6-million addition to the
Walmart store at 3939 Rochdale Blvd. Though the dollar value of building permits in Regina
is down from last January, activity is still strong, according to the city's building division.
Photograph by: Roy Antal, The Leader-Post, The Leader-Post

Regina's construction activity got off to strong start in January, with $29.6 million in building permits issued, compared with $38.3 million for the same period in 2009, according to the City of Regina's monthly building permit report.

While 22-per-cent below last year's record pace, the city is enjoying a healthy level of building so far this year, said Garry Wasyliw, manager of the city's building division.

"Development appears to be holding fairly consistently from the previous year, and we're looking for a similar year of activity again (in 2010),'' Wasyliw said.

The biggest permits issued in January were for a $7-million multiple-unit development at 2501 Windsor Park Rd., by Northridge Development Corp., and $6.45 million for an addition to the Loblaw Companies distribution centre on 12000 Dewdney Ave.

The $200-million, 500,000-square-foot distribution and warehouse facility, which is part of the global transportation hub (GTH) west of the city, is being built by Carwell Construction.

Rounding out the larger building permits for the month were $1.9 million for renovations to the Ramada Hotel & Convention Centre at 1818 Victoria Ave., and $1 million for a planned group development at 4822 James Hill Rd., by Sage Development.

"It's yet another multi-family dwelling construction project. There's many more to come. It's seems to be an ongoing (trend).''

Wasyliw noted residential construction was close to last year's levels, in terms of permits issued, with 45 permits issued for $15.6 million in January versus 44 permits issued for $24.5 million in January 2009.

Commercial, institutional and government construction activity was virtually the same as last year, with 33 permits issued for $12.7 million last month compared with 29 permits issued for $13 million during the same period in 2009.

Wasyliw said it's too soon to say whether or not Regina will match last year's record of $458 million worth of building permits issued, which shattered the previous record of $342 million set in 2008.

"It's a little early to see a trend up or down at this point,'' Wasyliw said.

"Based on the activity thus far, it looks like the same level of activity we started with last year."

That's hilarious! I guess now that the area's been annexed, the site has to have a street address.

Sweet deals, I had tried to suggest a long while back that we do something similar to Edmontons thread where they list all the projects on one page with a rendering of each, go check out Edmontons site to see what i mean. But a map might be even cooler so long as we have renderings

In fact here is the link http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=177634

More Exciting News For Regina...uh Yessss!

Delta Air Lines is doubling the number of flights it operates to and from Regina.
Photograph by: Troy Fleece, Leader-Post files

REGINA — Starting in April, Delta Air Lines will double the number of flights it currently operates between Regina and Minneapolis, the Regina Airport Authority (RAA) and the Atlanta-based airline announced Thursday.

Delta's expanded service will begin April 6, with four daily non-stops from Regina to Minneapolis return. This represents a doubling of the current number of flights, and an increase of 120 seats daily.

"This new service by Delta Air Lines significantly increases Regina's connections to the extensive Delta network," said RAA president and CEO Jim Hunter in a press release. Through its Minneapolis hub, Delta offers 439 peak-day departures to more than 130 destinations in North America and overseas.

"It increases our passengers' abilities to connect all throughout the United States and many international destinations," Hunter said an interview Thursday. "(Minneapolis) is like a mini-Denver. It's certainly not as big as Denver, but it sure does add to the flexibility for folks going out of town.''

Hunter added the expansion by Delta also signals the airline's willingness to compete for business with other airlines, like United, which introduced its Regina-to-Denver service in 2008.

"This reflects a decision by Delta that they're going to compete for the business transborder," he said. "United — these are their words — are very satisfied with the load factors they're getting on the Denver runs.''

Finally, Delta's expansion also signifies confidence in the Regina market and the local economy, Hunter said. "We've telling the story of Regina, a lot, to all of the airlines. That, plus they really want to compete.''

Karen Zachary, general manager of network planning of Delta Air Lines, said the airline decided to increase the number of daily flights from two to four due to the current volume of traffic and prospects for future growth.

"We have enjoyed significant success on our Regina routes, and with the optimistic economic outlook for Regina and southern Saskatchewan, we are looking forward to building on that success in co-operation with the Regina Airport Authority."

Delta will be flying the Regina-to-Minneapolis route using both Comair and SkyWest airlines, flying Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) aircraft, with capacities of 50 to 70 passengers.

Business class service will also be introduced on the first departure and the last arrival daily, effective June 10, when appropriate aircraft have been retrofitted and allocated to the route, the RAA said.

"They will be using the small CRJs on three of the flights, and there will be a business flight in the morning and the evening arrival. That will be a stretch (70 passenger) CRJ,'' Hunter said.

Hunter added there could be more flights to and from Regina, both domestically and internationally, announced in the coming weeks. "Stay tuned for more announcements, one south of the border, and another domestic.''

Where is the Saskatoon one? I don't think I've ever come across it.

Very goood news for Regina (and South Sask.) travellers . I especially like the part about more announced flights in the coming weeks. Any guesses as to what they might be? For the domestic flight I'm hoping they got the Ottawa flight they've been pursuing for the last couple of years.

City of Regina to reveal new image

http://www.leaderpost.com/news/City+Regina+reveal+image/2523546/story.html

City of Regina to reveal new image

REGINA — Mayor Pat Fiacco will be launching the city's new brand at his State of the City address on Monday at the Queensbury Centre at Evraz Place.

A media advisory went out Thursday indicating that the community branding committee would be providing an update on the branding project prior to the mayor's speech.

While details are still under wraps, Regina Regional Opportunities Commission CEO Larry Hiles, who is the chair of the branding committee, said the city needs a new image to go along with its new role as a rising economic star.

"Regina is on a really nice growth curve,'' Hiles said Thursday. "We're seeing lots of positive things (happen) ... It's very timely for the community to have good, solid brand to promote itself with.''

Based on polling data, opinion surveys and focus groups, Regina doesn't have a negative image so much as no image at all among most Canadians and people who live outside the country, he said.

"This is our opportunity to put some thought into how we are going to present ourselves to these folks who want to know more about us.''

Hiles added the new brand must convey a consistent and positive image of the city to people who may not know about the city's abundant employment opportunities or enviable quality of life.

"The whole branding initiative is to help put together a really good solid (brand), just like a company business plan, and then make sure we've got consistency in everything we say or do.''

Hiles said the branding strategy will provide the City of Regina and its partners, such as the Regina Regional Opportunities Commission, Regina Warehouse District and Regina Downtown, a consistent image to present to the public.

"If we think of the global companies that we're all familiar with, as soon as we hear their name or see their logos, that (kind of recognition) is what we're trying to create for Regina."

Hiles conceded that it will take time, perhaps years, for the new brand to become synonymous with the city.

"Companies spend billions managing these brands. Companies do that because they're in a competitive scenario and they need to build loyalty and commitment to their brand.''

Like it or not, communities compete for people just like companies compete for sales and market share, he added.

"Communities are in the same kind of world now because people are so mobile. So folks are choosing where they want to live, where they want to spend their time, for the next 40 years," Hiles said.

"They're choosing to go to those communities that have a good brand that matches what they want. So it's becoming important for communities to distinguish themselves through a brand that would be attractive to the folks they want to attract.''

You could use Google Earth and mark points on there. You can include information in each placemark on google earth about the developments. I've done it before with internet based motorcycle photo tag games and it's worked very well. Something to look into.

I like the sounds of this. I'm glad this city and province of late have decided to take themselves seriously and promote them.

Just curious is this means the city logo will change again? It's only been the skyline crest for about a decade or less.

I think it means a new slogan, like Saskatoon Shines and Moose Jaw - Surprisingly Unexpected. They apparently hired some PR folks form Ontario. I've heard most suggestions relate to Regina being flat. I predict: Regina - Infinite Horizons.

How about referring to Wascana, the man-made lake, "Regina, Man-made Marvel"

or all the planted trees "Regina, the Oasis on the Praries"
