Does anybody have any good photos of the new AGA? What does everyone think of it? It seemed to have looked better in the renderings IMO (Possibly because I have not yet seen it illuminated at night time) but all in all I enjoy it.

Kind of disheartening to read these types of comments though (which may or may not reflect the view of the majority or just the average Journal readers' comments...):

Jasper and one o nine, phase 1

First phase of Regency East
Infrastructure work for the quarters
Announcement about an onsite airport hotel
Construction on the Churchill - Macewan line will begin
Probably will not hear much about arena
I'd have to agree with all that. Too bad about Valleyview, though.

Those Journal comments about the new AGA are discouraging. I haven't seen the gallery in person but from what I've seen here I think it looks great. I wish it was a little larger.

^ Those Journal comments are written by cretins and morons. The AGA is a stunningly beautiful building. It's actually quite imposing in person. I think it's just the right size.

it should have stretched east all the way to 96 street and incorporated the sunken park in front of the courthouse but other than your assessment of size (and the dollars it would have taken to do that) i agree with your assessment of what is there (although the north side needs to have that zinc age and mellow for it to really work)...

^ You mean to 97 Street, or...?

So has anyone here been inside yet?

sorry but yes, i did mean to 97 street.

and i have been inside on a number of occasions although i don't have any photos . for what it's worth, as far as i'm concerned the inside is actually better and more successful than the outside... and it's not just the new spaces - the urban views from century to chancery to sun-life, the library, the westin, telus, edmonton centre, city hall are as urban as anything you will see in vancouver or toronto or new york. you stand there with a full panorama of stuctures surrounding sir winston churchill square with no break whatsoever - just a full and complete urban edge wrapping all the way around you through that sloped glazing that gives the view height as well as distance. very cool...

Off topic but I'm being transfered to Edmonton. Any good condos being built in the 300-350 range for 2 bed?

^If I was looking for new I'd probably look at Serenity or Quest.

Saw two tower cranes in a large convoy of flatbed semis heading north on the QE2 as I was driving to Red Deer this morning. Wonder what they are for ?

Do you want to miss a fist going through some expensive piece of art?

before moving to homeward trust, susan was the executive director for the edmonton downtown develoment corporation and was an active member in the international downtown association among other industry groups and organizations. she was intimately involved in the redevelopment of the goodridge block as well as much of the current legislation affecting downtown and some of the areas around it. from some of your comments i would hazard a guess that she probably has a lot more experience and a lot better grasp of what makes successful downtowns work - and what doesn't - than you do. and take it from me, dealing with homelessness and the issues surrounding it will probably do more than the next curtainwall office or condo will on their own to making downtown work better for all of us. because homelessness doesn't "work" for any of us at any level.
blah blah blah.

You've posted a whole paragraph and only use quotations once? wow.

Your opinions of what experience it takes to make a downtown work is irrelevant. Doesn't matter how many times your name has been published in a newspaper, everybody who steps foot (or doesnt in downtown) will tell you ridding the core of homeless would be good for it.

She calls for the most expensive solution possible and try's to play on people's sympathy and guilt to achieve her agenda. It simply doesn't belong in an otherwise wonderfull article showing what Edmonton could be like in ten years.

you'll never rid the DT core of homeless people. You can't move them to residential neighborhoods... residents won't stand for that. You can't move them to some sort of uninhabited warehouse district outside the core, there's no means of making any money out there.

Like it or not, DT is where the homeless people go. In every city.

The only way you are going to discourage street people from causing bother is to have more people on the streets - eating, shopping, strolling, living, etc.

Would you rather mug someone in a desolate, dark, parking lot; or in the middle of WEM on boxing day?

That said, homelessness is a fact of life; and the homeless should be encourage to better themselves or seek help... not forced to or picked up in paddy wagons and placed elsewhere. Not all homeless people are criminals, most are just down on their luck and/or too sick to help themselves. By having more of a populace in their territory will do nothing but change the situation in a positive manner.
