LOL, it's a 3-minute walk from the station....about the same distance as Brighouse to the nearest entrance to Richmond Centre.

Its a shame the extension lot right beside the station is still just a pile of dirt.

Don't let that discourage you though. Aberdeen is unmistakable, its the huge looming building right beside the station. 1 minute walk, 30 seconds if you're running

so it seems to me that todays christmas parade was the first big downtown event and test if you will for the new Canada line and how it deals with crowds etc.

I got on at broadway and off at VCC and they had some crowd control which wasn't needed at the time i was there and some of the people looked puzzled - they made them go through long windy lines to get to the stairs

anyway they had set out barriers and stuff - so they seemed to deal with it well

was anywhere there in the thick of it?

my friend who was there earlier said the lineup was quite long on the street

Yes, for a few days. I am off to NYC Tuesday. So my stay is short lived.

And I must have Beard Papa Though they do have *one* location in NYC on Broadway.

I asked over at Buzzer Blog why the Canada Line shuts down at 1:15am during the Olympic, while the Expo and Millennium are shutting down at 2:15a,. I suggested it was idiotic to have two different shutdown times and that Translink should have all the Sky trains running to the same shutdown time.

The answer: the Canada Line shut down time is not up to Translink, it's up to InTransit as the operator of the line.

So much for integrated transportation. InTransit will shut it down as soon as possible (under the agreement) tosave money, because that's all they're going to care about.

I'm not impressed.

Sigh: - how long to the next election?

I blame those who wrote the agreement... it just doesn't make sense to give up control over service hours like that.

Yes. Is the contract available somewhere? I imagine a freedom of information request should be able to produce it.

I saw the picture of VCC station taken by someone else yesterday, it's exactly like the opening day. Not looking good for the coming Olympics

No, it is not looking good for the Olympics if the Santa Claus parade causes mass overload.

But, I would think a lot of people will be sticking around the downtown area, and those going to events not in downtown, may stick to the bus network.

As for the Canada Line shutdown times, will Translink be operating a bus-route to cover for the one hour that Canada Line is down but Expo/Millennium are not?

Also, what is the Canada Lines normal operating hours?

Well you're always going to get a crush for large events that start and end abruptly. The Olympics will be more like constant activity from morning until night.

How was the Canada Line for something like U2? That would be on par with the biggest events that happen during the Olympics, the opening/closing ceremonies.

They do need to provide peak level service all day for those 2 weeks though, on as many forms as possible (Skytrain, bus, Seabus, etc).

Well, if they are expecting another 250,000 - 300,000 people during the Olympics, that is a bit larger than a U2 concert. BUT, where will these people be going is the big key. If it is true the Santa Claus parade had over 600,000 people this year, that is roughly what will be expected during the Olympics, and most of them probably won't be going home to Richmond... but will they go visit, shop, etc. ?

Either way, YVR - Downtown will probably be a complete zoo. It's already pretty busy.

The Canada Line will take the brunt of traffic to/from:

- the airport
- the oval (7600 people x 1-2 events/day x 12 days)
- curling (5600 people x 3 events/day x 10 days)
- UBC (6800 x 1-2 events/day x 10 days)

Plus a minority portion of the traffic to the daily victory ceremonies and GM Place events.

Canada Line will be more heavily stressed than the E/M lines... even before the capacity issues. I really hope that ProTrans will have all 20 trains available.

Thanks to the oval, and the airport traffic, both branches of the line will be busy.

Canada Line starts 45 minutes earlier than E/M lines, and ends about 15 minutes earlier, on weekdays. Canada Line runs the same hours 7 days a week, so it has better hours than E/M lines on the weekends.

See here

I finally rode the length of the line to catch a flight a few weeks ago. It was perfect but pitch black outside so I didn't see much.

Paying a cab driver $50 to get back to the North Shore when I got back after the Canada line shut down (2:00am) sucked though.

Does anybody know if the Canada Line service schedule will be increased during the Olympics. I know that the service hours won't be extended but will they be using all 20 trains?

Probably not likely, unless they have to deal with a lot of lineups at stations.
