Yes, Mayor Mandel is forward thinking...and no...Counsellor Henderson mentioned recently That a CERTAIN company is doing a good percentage of the design work in Edmonton. And yes you are correct...that is why we are lambasted with the same mediocre designs.

^At least we still got Procura and ATB doing some decent work, and TNP seems to be doing extremely good with Uptown in design compared to their previous "accomplishments".

St. Stephen's Anglican Church, on the corner of 109th Avenue and 96th Street, is closed and apparently slated for demolition.

A downtown Anglican church that has served the inner city for almost a century faces demolition because it's unsafe and too expensive to repair, Bishop Jane Alexander said Friday...

Here we go again....

Momentum returning to oilsands

Gary Lamphier
Edmonton Journal

Saturday, November 21, 2009

EDMONTON / Feel it? Suddenly, there's a buzz in the air. Alberta's big, bad oilsands are back in vogue.

Oh, don't get too excited -- or aggravated, depending on how you feel about North America's biggest, messiest industrial project.

The oilsands boom isn't coming back anytime soon. At least, not in its original, chaotic form...

When is Edmonton going to start realizing it's worth protecting some of the city's heritage? I know provincial laws make it difficult (without knowing the precise ins and outs) but, frankly, I think of the cities I go to visit, and it's not the shiny new ones that hold my attention... it's the cities that have a sense of place and permanence. Maybe that's just me though... even Vancouver (where I live) has done way too little to protect its heritage.

the alberta association of architects lists 117 member firms - yes, that is firms, not members - in edmonton. if anyone thinks any single firm is doing "a good percentage of the design work in edmonton", they probably need to post less and get out more. and if a single firm is doing a good percentage of the design work in a particularly segment of the market, that probably has as much to do with the relatively small size of that market segment and the profile of the projects they are doing within it as it does anything else. lambasted you say? maybe you'd rather see more of this:

after all, it doesn't have any white (other than some of the railings ).

the photo's from wiki of a block in georgia but i could post tons of others from prague and a host of other cities that would love to see some of bkarchitecture's work in their home towns. is all of that work cutting edge? probably not, but that doesn't mean it's out there lambasting you or anyone else...

Yeah, but the pictures you are posting, or could post, are of buildings that were built during communism. So they don't really count.

I was in Prague recently, and trust me, the new buildings they have put up are much nicer than most of what's being built in Edmonton.

we were there in september. some of what's being done is good, some of it is decent, and much of what you see ranges from mediocre to poor - much like here (or almost anywhere else for that matter). and i didn't come across any medium to high rise structures i would consider exceptional new or not (unlike paris which doesn't get enough credit for the quality of some of its high rise structures).

Mine? Podiums have to go. Brutal!!
I supported Vision for the Corner based on its planning merits, mature neighbourhood reinvestment and densification. What I didn't like is the overall shape of the podium and towers. It will be difficult to design efficient unit layouts within the cylindrical towers as will the odd sloped facade of the podium. These types of inefficiencies causes a developer to lose yeild.

Yeah... There is a handfull of companys that do a good % of —....whats do you not see? Your comment on this is Redundant...and rhetorical!!!

(and if a single firm is doing a good percentage of the design work)!!!.. in a particularly segment of the market, that probably has as much to do with the relatively small size of that market segment and the profile of the projects they are doing within it as it does anything else.

What do you mean and If!!!! They are.

What is happening in Prague who cares ?

Sure it's ok to blame BKA for mediocre design, but let's not forget here that they are getting these design contracts for a reason... capitalism doesn't always work properly when it's convenient

I'd say the timing is just about right for some larger players to move into the market.

Edmonton moves toward open data
City Hall workshop brings together IT developers, academics and business people to share ideas

Bill Mah
Edmonton Journal

Sunday, November 22, 2009

Want to use the mountains of data compiled by the City of Edmonton to aid your everyday life in a fun and cool way that's instantly at your fingertips?

There's not an app for that--yet. But about 60 Edmontonians huddled around flipcharts at City Hall Saturday exploring how the city can make its information more accessible online...
