I see. Well welcome...enjoy the rain. It'll be depressing for a bit but then when you notice how nice your skin gets, you'll surely appreciate it.

The thing with considering Broadway corridor downtown means you'd have to consider Fairview and all of that part that is super sloped downtown as well then. And that just doesn't jive. And if you don't then you can't say an isolated section that's not contiguous with the downtown peninsula as part of downtown.

To each their own but how would one react if you told a taxi to take you 'downtown' and they dropped you off along Broadway?

I got chastised for posting an update on Pine on 8th in the Downtown Updates thread.

Like I said, there is no clear cut answer....

I just think it is unfair to jump on someone for posting in here since the interpretation is so ambiguious, regardless of your stance on the manner.

Sneaky photo I took today of the almost-open Red Card Sports Bar, at Seymour and Smithe. I can make out a pizza oven and some bagged disco-balls...

^ Re: Red Card Sports Bar

Where is that located exactly? I cannot really picture where a space like that might be.

Thanks for the covert photography.

City hall is not downtown. Downtown means "tower area" in most cities.

Rather than expand downtown because City Hall is all the way on 12th and Cambie, I'd actually say that City Hall is unique in that it is located out of downtown.

Oh semantics.

IMO as a suburbanite - anything on the peninsula is Downtown Vancouver. Anything else in Vancouver is just Vancouver.

Anything on the south side of any of the bridges I don't think can be considered downtown.

I noticed everyone pointing out that Main & Broadway is not downtown; interestingly enough CTV National News reported the fire as being "downtown Vancouver", which I though was funny. Perhaps from the perspective of Toronto, we may as well say it's downtown for simplification. I do sometimes think of Broadway as being relatively downtown in a loose definition, after all the environment is "downtown-like", but is mostly just seperated by geography.

So, if the "tower area" expands, say, all the way around False Creek to meet Broadway, does the downtown then become larger to include that area ?

Also, the West End is sometimes called downtown, but is known to be seperate by most definitions.

I actually found it a bit upsetting when Lloyd Robertson said the fire was in downtown Vancouver. I live in Mt Pleasant, and should have been rather pleased to know that I am now living downtown.

I like the uptown label too, but have never heard it used in reference.

I agree.
