As long as CN and CP own the routes there will be no cheap options. Canada uses trains for hauling product and vehicles for hauling people. Where Europe does more of the reverse for travel.

The folks at Marmot e-mailed me back... appologetic and said they were looking to correct the issue.

It's just too bad it takes the involvement of our little advocacy groups to get things set right all the time.

I understand the whole experience thing, but I would love to take the train to Jasper - it just makes no sense what-so-ever as a reasonable option. I would cost over a grand me, my wife and child to go there and back.
It is not meant to be an option for residents of edmonton

Actually, I do stand corrected. I did a search on the Via site and cost for my family came in at just over $500. Round trip - So yes, I would consider that an option. I think the prices came down since the last time I searched

A little off topic but a friend of mine recently came back from Australia and was fortunate to fly from LAX to Sydney on the new A380 Airbus owned by Quantas. He was full of compliments saying the plane was very quiet and comfortable even though he was sitting in the lower economy section. A spiral staircase to the upper level is in the back of the plane so he went up to look around. For a plane that size it took a while to get off the ground but he said it was a smooth flight and perfect landing.

No no, we want the $5.00 in transit fares. A penny spurned is a penny wasted.

A good experiment to be sure - but I doubt the service would see an incredible amount of use, and no one group is willing to fund it.

If it is really going to be that good, the airport authority should fund it, and the city should allocate a bus bay for it.

The airport should stop their airport express little buses if they choose to fund this, which they won't IMO.

I love the idea of a city bus (motorcoach) even if a loss leader. WE NEED a more affordable way to get workers and passengers to YEG, simple as that.

^ with workers having free parking at the airport, I doubt the system would have more users than Portland's LRT to the airport which draws 2,000 people a day (Portland's airport carries more than double the number of PAX). At $2.50 a ride for workers if your driving it is cheaper to drive in all but the biggest gas guzzlers if you have a car at your disposal already.

The service should be implemented for captive riders, but the amount of subsidy is a reasonable question.

Wasn't the city toting some 'fancier' experimental buses last year to envision what future transit service could look like in Edmonton (with extra luggage-space, WiFi, etc.)? If so, This would be an ideal route to pilot on.

I like the idea of running it out of Century Park Station (South Campus would be another good option as it's a little more centrally located, but doesn't matter). An extra $2.50 is a much better price point than cab fare (hell, beats paying for parking at the airport too!).

I certainly will give this a try whenever it begins operations. I think many other people in Edmonton will as well.

While I don't think the full-on ETS Platinum bus would be economic at the outset, I'd rather see ETS acquire some "Platinum-esque" or "Platinum-lite" busses over motorcoaches if the service proves to be profitable & have legs. They'd be far more cross-purposable than the motorcoaches.

I know I'd use it every time I come to YEG. Toronto has what's called the "Airport Rocket." It's a regular city bus that goes from the end of the subway line up the freeway to the airport non-stop. City buses can do it, and yes, it can be a bit crowded with bags sometimes, but that's to be expected.

I hope the new service is embraced!

I'd use it as well.

And for those who say the cost won't be worth it. I've seen many more early morning, peak hour and late evening buses that run empty. You have to start somewhere with this type of service.

Anyone notice AMS on the eia website even though nothing has been announced yet.Click the airservice link and you can see it on the generic map.Its the red dot in between LHR and FRA.It was not there before.
