I am still one of those people that think the West LRT should have gone to Mount Royal. But I'm still glad to see construction go ahead.

MRU can be served by a circle LRT. The midpoint between Westbrook and Chinook.

Eventually it will likely be on a LRT or ICTS mirroring the current circle route, so all is not lost. Going to Mount Royal is more than adding a destination, it would be completely changing the raison d'etre of the LRT system which is to allow the city to limit road size to suburban communities, while limiting downtown auto demand. A line to Mount Royal did neither of those things even half as well as the existing alignment, as can be seen in ridership projections.

Hmm. In the animation, it looks like all the stations (except the terminus of course) are side-loading platforms. I wonder if there's a reason for that.

I still don't buy it. We have designed the LRT as a single purpose transit system, and until we realize that it needs to be more than that, we will forever be stuck in the paradigm of reducing suburban automobile trips to the CBD. Self fulfilling prophecy.

On most of the stations its either safety reasons (for the at-grade) or cases where it really doesn't matter all that much. Personally I'd prefer if Westbrook was centre loading though, but theres probably a case for the side loading there as well

The old strip mall across from Westbrook mall (where the Bravo/Encore etc. condo towers are) is now being demolished as of yesterday afternoon when I drove past.

I like side loading stations myself. Centre-loading stations to me are best suited for transfer stations, but we don't have any of those in Calgary anyways.

My guess, for this particular station would be that side loading would require less excavation. All else being equal in desired platform sizes, in a center loading platform, the tracks have to diverge out and around the platform.

I doubt that will ever happen.. we don't have the luxury of "spur lines" at this point..

I knew someone who worked for the Spanish Consortium, Acciona Infrastructures Canada Inc. and Dragados Canada Incorporated. Too bad for them.

Likewise, I know a guy who works for PCL, and they were really pushing hard to get it as well.

I think:

Bow Trail work between Crowchild and 33rd Street - starting on the north side is my guess.

17th Avenue and Sarcee Trail detour construction

Perhaps the 7th Avenue block work for 11th Street Station
The first work you are likely to see is around the 17th ave/Sarcee interchange, site removals and utility work. Then it will be site removals and utility work along the rest of the route, along with some detours.
