Well, according to the article, it sounds like this is going to be a Target like the one at The District in South Jordan without groceries... the one at The District just has a couple of aisles of chips, cookies and soda... which is pretty lame.

But wasn't much of the original facade still underneath that mess of a faux front? If that's the case I sure wouldn't want to see anything but a restoration. That was one very attractive front.

Not sure if any of you know, but Target has changed the way their stores look inside and out. A couple of the stores in and around Richmond, VA have been upgraded. It is still has a suburban feel however it is more visually appeasing.

The apartment building that was used in the film is located on 300 E, but closer to 400 S (352 S). there are two buildings, one behind the other. They are across the street from the Cinegrill restaurant. My extended family owned the property next door and leased the parking lot to the film crew during the filming. Most of the filming was done between the two buildings, and not out by the street. Of course, it is entirely possible, likely actually, that they used several locations and pieced them together as one.

The article says nothing about demolition. It is trying to sell the building as a restoration, which could be amazing! With the other RDA properties and this, State Street could see a new revival of liveliness. Maybe the same kind of renaissance on Main would begin to appear on State.

The new store at the District has the new look, I believe that the one at Jordan Landing does as well. Their new stores all around the country have some variation on this look:

Just google images for "new target store" and you'll see a lot of examples.

The SuperTarget in Fort Union was also recently remodeled to a similar look (mostly on the inside) and the 300 W. Store looks like it will be similar:

The Leonardo announces opening, with Nobel laureate adviser

Six years after Salt Lake City voters agreed to help cover the tab for an innovative art, science and technology center, The Leonardo at Library Square has set an opening date.

On Tuesday, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker announced the long-awaited makeover of the old main library will debut April 15, 2011 -- Leonardo da Vinci's 557th birthday.

Leonardo officials also revealed that one of Utah's leading scientists has joined the project. Nobel Prize winner Mario Capecchi has agreed to serve as the center's "senior adviser."

I directed a short film last year and we used the same apartment complex for the exterior of our apartment location. We just set up a bulky camera and got a bunch of shots of the building, nothing too big.

Stimulus to help fund solar power initiatives

The U.S. Department of Energy will sink hundreds of thousands of dollars into solar-power initiatives in the Salt Lake Valley, thanks to a federal stimulus payout announced Tuesday.
The money comes as part of a $10 million Solar America Cities grant, designed to help 16 cities nationwide develop programs and policies that better enable them to tap the energy of the sun.
"Salt Lake City is proud to be selected as one of the key U.S. cities leading the charge to remove barriers for solar-energy use," Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker said in a statement. "Our residents will reap the benefits in accessibility and affordability derived from the work of the Solar Salt Lake Project."
While Salt Lake County's share of the grant money remains unspecified -- only that it is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars -- the money will be used to reduce regulatory barriers that stand in the way of solar development and to devise financing mechanisms that will encourage large-scale installations.

It's been very cool to see that the buildings in my neighborhood (Broadway) that have undergone renovations-- and there have been A LOT of them-- are all adding solar panels to the roofs. Including the building we've been discussing from Dumb and Dumber. Solar power is such a no-brainer good idea.
I was in LA recently for a movie premiere, and I went into Santa Monica. There was a building there that had solar panels all over it as part of the architecture. It sounds weird, but it actually looked really good. Imagine the Metro here in SLC, but make the metalic panels solar panels.

When I read the article, I was disappointed that it seems to be $10 million total for all cities. They should pump like $10 billion into that, not $10 million.
