the tubing idea is good, there is no real spots near saskatoon that has enough height for a true ski hill, that is one of main reasons why blackstrap failed, if table was 30 minutes outside of the city it would be packed. I have only been to blackstrap a couple times and the hill always seemed like a joke to me.

it really doesn't need to be very big at all to accomodate beginners and for the snowboarders (98% of those visiting blackstrap...or all 12)
just put up a couple really nice jumps and rails and thats all you need.

even something for tubing, with some mogul kind of obstacles to keep it interesting....these things could easily be done at the renovated part of the dump, defienbaker etc

So I checked out Scratch last night. I was actually disappointed with it. First I had to pay $10 to get into an overcrowded club that lacked any type of club etiquette (people being aggressive, flailing all over when they are dancing, etc.). Second I was blown away by the dress that was allowed through the doors. Most of the women looked like they walked right out of a magazine which is great and then the men....*sigh*, they looked like they rolled out of the Lorass bin behind west 49

. Third, the line up at the bar was ridiculously long so my friends and I gave up on drinks. Now lastly the music to start was some OK dance and house and then went to some less then desirable hip hop. I like hip hop but good hip hop not chauchy southern US style hip hop.

I had a good time there but I think a dress code should be implemented and I'm sure the lines and etiquette will sort itself out. Hopefully the owner seeks to have a resident DJ and that these DJ's are just temporary till they find one.

It looks like yet another all you can eat sushi place is opening on 8th st. This is in addition to the previously mentioned "Go For Sushi" in the former Sew and Home space.

The new place is going in the former Flatlanders space. The sign says the name but I missed it.

Do you think this invasion has something to do with an increased immigration rate of Japanese people into the city? I'm certainly hoping so!!! Saskatoon is really lacking in diversity, our diversity consists of hick, non hick and aboriginal

I doubt there has been any significant immigration from Japan (other part of east Asia for sure, but not Japan). I just think its a case of exploiting an untapped market. I mean a person can only live on dry ribs for so long.

The long dark reign of the 'family restaurant' appears to be drawing to a close.

Some day soon people may even have to go to the grocery store to have McCain Super Fries to go with their dry ribs.

I'm noticing from the last few posts you guys are undergoing a Sushi revolution up there... we have had a few new places pop up in the last little while as well down in Regina. What I'm wondering is, is if you guys have had an influx of East Indian Restaurants over the last few years too? We went from having none to I think 4 or 5 pop up in the past few years, although I think there has been a bit of an influx of East Indian immigrants here.

I can think of two Indo/Pakistani restaurants that have opened in the last little while. I'm sure there's more. The other big influx has been with Shwarma/Falafel shops. We've gone from zero to a half dozen within the last year.

Saskatoon has had a few Indian restaurants for quite a while, I'm noticing more middle eastern stuff opening up like the Donair etc. There is a fantastic old lady that sells delicious Turkish and Lebanese desserts at the farmers market I highly recommend! I'm glad the sushi wave is finally hitting us, we are still unfortunately waiting for the nightlife wave to hit us, meaning clubs not crap bars.

It's really interesting to see how many forums and public events the city is hosting in regards to architecture and positive urban development. Do you think this is just coincidental or that there is some large underground plan no one knows about that is really focusing on creating a well developed urban playground. Here's hoping!

It's too bad that it wasn't all good for you, you kinda got the worst of it hahah...usually cover is 5 bucks, and if you go before 11:00 there is no line, and you got a shitty DJ at the end (I think I know who it was, and I feel sorry for you haha...)

Also your point about the guys not dressing up, Saskatoons got this thing that if your a guy and you look classy, your gay. Which is fine but most heterosexual guys don't want to be perceived as gay, thus they don't dress up to go out. Either that or they just don't care to look decent, which is equally as ignorant. Not gettin' any ladies doing that...

The only thing I don't agree is is the resident DJ. Scratch has brought a lot DJ talent in there since they opened, (small town djs, wax romeo, even the gaff from Calgary was better than most in house dj's here) and I think that's something that sets them apart from other bars. If a really good DJ wants to spin in saskatoon, should he go to the overdrive, or to scratch??

Too funny! But too true. Seems like places were branded "Greek" or "Italian" cause they serve either Greek ribs or lasagna. I like to think that Saskatoon's becoming more culturally diverse by way of restaurant metaphor:

Influx of sushi restaurants may better indicate social progress (or at least change) moreso than the number and size of Walmarts we have around the city. Eh, gowest? ah, jus buggin ya. I took my kids to the Stonebridge Walmart yesterday, as they're expanding it into a "supercentre" (= regular Walmart + grocery store) and we could stand on the safe side of the fence watching the trucks and graders work maybe 2 meters from us. They were enthralled... and to be honest, so was I. Heh.

So..... 11 days to the end of October and the hard deadline for Lake Placid, but no announcements from them lately? (sighs, sips coffee, nods sullenly)

I guess I did end up with the crap didn't I? I was there by 10:30 and there was a huge line! From my understanding Scratch is meant to be house music right?

I can tell the guys here want to dress up b/c there DC's were all cleaned up and they had a big baggy dress shirt on. It's so unfortunate that people think so backwards here, oh well maybe with some boom in this city the men will develop the confidence to wear some fitted pants, correct shoes and a shirt that showcases their body not some thing that looks like their old sheets. One shoe lounge and fashion boutique at a time we will slowly see the transition! What we really need are a few highrise business towers and suites walking around. That usually promotes good fashion.

McDonalds at Miller and 51st is closed for renovations. Maybe it's catching on the wave and will open as McSushi. Interesting thought!!!!
