Fair enough, but there are signs, and I've never seen it happen for long without a "friendly reminder" from somebody standing on the left behind them....

I for the most part noticed eseclator etiquette to be quite good on public transit in vancouver. Aside from the odd uninformed person everyone seems to stand to the right and walk left.

Elevators in malls or dept. stores is another story all together though.

Elevator etiquette and boarding etiquette here suck. People who stand RIGHT IN FRONT of the doors and don't move for people disembarking are just idoiots. And they wonder why it takes so long for them to get on as they try to barge past everybody getting off?!?!? It's just a lack of common sense.

Hehe, i did someting very cheeky the other week about this. I was departing at Waterfront, about 30 people were still in the car needing to get off. At the platform, there was only about 30 people waiting to get on, who I noticed were already beginning to crown the door area. As soon as the door opened the people at the platform were already beginning to lean into the door so I spread my arms out as far as I could and walked out, pushing them to the side, saying "You let people off first, that is how trains work people."

I felt kind of like a dick, but I am so tired of the lack of train etiquette in this city it also felt good.

I find Vancouver to be in line with the rest of North American transit that I've been to. It's ok but not perfect.

Contrast that with my recent trip to Europe and rides on metro systems in Rome and Istanbul. People are literally pushing their way on when the doors open. You need to be right by the door and move out as soon as it opens.

So.. it looks like it's cultural.

I'm not averse to pushing people out of the way when I'm trying to get out of the Skytrain though. And I mean people who are clearly trying to get on the train I'm exiting.

correct like any other police force in bc under the bc police act they can enforce the law anywhere in bc. btw they are now the SCBCTAPS (South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Police Service)

I think it is a "who is slower" race between #3 road and Granville.

Awesome.

I used to do something similar when I worked at Metrotown and got tired of having to try and politely battle through people crowding the front of the door. I would either stand in the middle of door not letting anyone on and wait until people complained, at which point I would point out that they cannot get on until I get off, or I would just shove through the crowd without any regard whatsoever to who got knocked over.

In some cities it is a ticketable offense to impede disembarking passengers or block the doors. Rightly so.

I think those stations with centre platform are fine, but I'm not sure about a few station with 40-meter side platforms. Oakridge and Langara's side platforms are particularly narrow, and it already seems crowded at time when there is like 30 people waiting.

Also we need to keep in mind that right now daily ridership hovers just above 82,000 (though the latest record was apparently set at 97,000 on last Friday). Canada Line would see 1.5-2 times more uses in future years before it probably reaches certain ridership plateau.

Transit police focus on all public transit systems including bus, skytrain(Expo Line, M Line and Canada Line), Seabus and WCE. I am not sure about BC Ferries's vessel though. They also patrol areas around skytrain station.

From their web site at http://www.gvtaps.bc.ca/

Q. What is the Transit Police Service's mandate?
A. Transit Police Service responsibilities include:
•Arresting people for outstanding warrants, enforcing drug laws and the Criminal Code (Canada);
•Patrolling trains, stations and transit property for added safety and security of transit passengers and employees; and,
•Enforcing provincial and federal laws, including issuing violation tickets for fare evasion and other violations of the Transit Conduct and Safety Regulations.

Q. What the Transit Police Service is not?
A. The Transit Police Service is not a replacement for the jurisdictional police in Greater Vancouver but a "supplementary" policing unit. The joint cooperative and collaborative relationship will contribute to a "seamless" policing endeavour.

Interesting, what is your source for the 97,000 figure?

More frequency is what's required then.

I find it can be hit or miss when it comes to boarding etiquette. Sometimes you get people waiting and other times people for some reason think that two people can occupy the exact same space and time

Generally when I'm boarding I'll actually stand in the back and watch all the pushing and shoving and then when it is all cleared casually walk onto the train.

I did call this old woman the "C" (female part) word who kept pushing to get on. Meanwhile this old man was trying to get off and past her. He kept trying to leave and she kept trying to get on. So eventually he just pushed his way and shoulder knocked her. I happened to be right behind him watching all this. Jesus woman are you late for you funeral.

I feel kind of sorry for the Jugo Juice folks, there's never any customers at their Canada Line outlets when I'm there.
