The only time i was checked was once when I was exiting city center. The stations I use the most are City Center (a lot faster to transfer there during the mall hours than waterfront), Yaletown, Bridgeport and Brighouse.

I've only used the Canada Line six times since it opened, and i was checked for a fare for 4 of those 6 times....whereas on SkyTrain, no comment.

I'm so disappointed in you Mr. X. Re-read your sentence. You've just differentiated between Canada Line and SkyTrain - I thought you were always for the system being known as SkyTrain.

What you really meant is ... whereas on the E and M lines, no comment

I take approximately 9 trips per week, Brighouse <-> Waterfront, and have done so regularly since September 7. I've been checked once.

I've been checked twice so far , one time at Broadway-Cityhall station, another time on train (Vancouver underground section, couldn't remember between which stations)

Some year ago when I use M-Line almost 4 days+ per week , perhaps due to my commute pattern and time I used, I have been checked like 5 times+ per month

No, to Mr. X, M and E Lines are Skytrain and Canada Line is low capacity low frequency light metro disguised as a quasi heavy rail system that may be pretty and all but it definitely ain't Skytrain.

the otehr day when transferring from m to e at broadway they had 4 officers standing at the top of teh escaltors checking people - i was quite shocked

BC Ferries boss says Canada Line fares "too cheap"

TransLink should raise its Canada Line fares between downtown Vancouver and Vancouver International Airport because the current $3.50 levy for adults is "way too cheap," according to British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. CEO David Hahn.


"[TransLink] has to generate cash. That's the issue," Hahn told the Surrey Regional Economic Summit on October 6.

"We've been taken to task over the last six years for raising fares, but we had to raise fares to raise cash to build new ships, to transform something that was allowed to deteriorate."

TransLink spokesman Ken Hardie told BIV that the bargain Hahn described will end December 31. Starting in January, fares to the airport will rise to $5 per adult for a three-zone trip.

B.C. Comptroller General Cheryl Wenezenki-Yolland has completed work on her government-ordered review of how well both TransLink and BC Ferries operate and is expected to give her report to Ministry of Finance officials within the week.

Surrey mayor Dianne Watts chairs the 22-member mayors council that will decide by October 31 whether to approve a 10-year plan for TransLink starting January 1, 2010. Potential options include boosting the transit authority's budget by either $450 million, $130 million or not at all.

I've taken maybe ten or twelve trips on the Canada Line thus far and haven't been checked. Last trip I saw a checker as I was on my way out of City Centre station; he let me pass and stopped the guy walking a few paces behind me.

WTF does the price of public transit have to do with Ferries? The Canada Line doesn't run to the island!

Interesting note from Hardie.. does that mean they are just going to make the airport another zone?

Read the specific quote though:

Last year some time:

Now what Hardie said the other day:

$5 is the regular price of a 3 zone trip today. If he's saying Downtown to YVR is $5, that means the airport will be a 3rd zone. Which is what we've suggested here to make it fit in with the system (if you must charge a fee, which I disagree with).

Every time I used Aberdeen station during weekend, the same attendant would stand at the top of the escalator checking ticket. I also got ticket checked at City Centre station and most stations in Richmond almost 75% of the time. Transit police also checked ticket and issued fine to a person at Bridgeport station last Saturday when I went up to the platform.

Aren't Transit police Translink employees? I didn't know they had any jurisdiction on the Canada Line.

^ Transit Police/GVTP is part of Translink but not part of SkyTrain or any other Translink subsidiary. From what I gather, they have jurisdiction on the entire region but they're obviously focused on transit - mainly SkyTrain. I see them at UBC from time to time.

I think if they asked the blue jackets to be fare checkers, it may work well. They ask people to buy a ticket.

If they see a fare evader who refuses to buy a ticket, they call it in. Similar to what bus drivers do today. They can't give fines, but they can ask you to pay. This keeps honest people from seeing ( or having the perception ) that others are getting away with fare evasion.

They USED to check tickets.

I finally took my first ride on the Canada Line this morning. Some brief comments:

The good
- Stations are nice, clean, bright. Platform length is fine.
- Cars are great, big front windows, lit tunnel is nice, they do the best they can for a boring ride in a tube
- nice seats (I can sit in a seat without my knees jammed against the seat in front).
- Lots of info via screens, next train time is awesome, very easy to navigate


The bad
- too much jibber jabber at the station. no smoking, let passengers off, etc. I was at VCC when 2 trains arrived at once, it's way too much blabber. no smoking? Come on, that's just not required today.

The ugly
- there was water pooled on the southbound tracks between Yaletown and OV stations. It was raining today, but nothing like what's to come this year, what gives?
- minor, but the windshield wiper wasn't on the front window in the rain today. Are they sensor operated?

All in all a great line.
