I think we are confusing a few things with the art in Burrard Stn. That wooden board can be removed. The main art component at Burrard isn't that wooden board that's blocking the view of the fountain, but posted on the walls of the escalator run as well as one wall in the platform access area.
the artwork itself is fine

but it just looks cheap and slapped together - which is a shame to the artists

it looks like an afterthought not a proper showcase or installation

I can't comment on the quality of art presented by the Emily Carr students at the Burrard Station, as I haven't really had a good look at them.

Referring to the 'wooden board' installation -- the presentation is, to say the least, unprofessional. Presentation is akin to those elementary school art exhibits they put up in suburban malls.

Public art really is about more than just what it is, but also where it is and how it relates to its environment. If you believe this to be true, then perhaps this installation has deserved some criticism.

I just think they chose the wrong artwork for the location. I'm sure all those works are probably very good, if only put in the right environs.

edit: ehh just posted basically what SpongeG said ^^^

As an emily student, i couldnt help but furrow my brow at the sneaker collage. That's the only installment i dont like. It just looks like plywood propped up and wheat pasted with shoe ads from a distance. The works on the escalator walls are wonderful, though

Clearly, some stupid idiot decide to smoke on the platforms a few days ago, and now, ProTransBC is playing a looping message that plays every few minutes, "Your attention please. Passengers are reminded that smoking is not allowed on the Canada Line." God it's annoying.

^ yea, i'm supportive of automated announcements but this is stretching it.

Focus on the following only:
- onboard destination announcements (e.g. This train is for Waterfront)
- platform destination announcements (The train on the inbound platform is for..)
- onboard station announcements (The next station is,...)
- please let passengers exit the train first before boarding

Announcements about food and smoking should be played occassionally in the trains, not the platform.

I hate it when they make personal announcements (GREG! YOUR MOM IS WAITING FOR YOU AT WATERFRONT!). It's unprofessional.

They really do overreacte to every little thing.

ZOMG! There's 20 people on the platform! It's a fire hazard!!!! We must hold people back into a lineup 100 persons long!!!!

Well this is a safety thing that I wouldn't mind. SkyTrain does this sometimes actually.

The more useless announcements that are made the more people are going to eventually completely disregard them altogether. I guess it's just human psyche.

I agree it looks really cheap. I laughed out loud the first time I saw it.

Meanwhile our "oh-so-green" city council is doing there best to discourage transit ridership by slapping permit or 2 hour parking signs all along Cambie. Most laughable is putting resident parking along Cambie between King Ed and 29th. In my 10 years of commuting that route I never saw a resident park on any of those blocks, day or night.

How does making driving a less convenient option discourage transit use?

Canada Line stations show up on Google maps now.

Streetview is also there on almost every street.

Although the bus loop is still missing at Bridgeport, and so is the Golden Ears Bridge.

Simple. Someone "parking and riding" is incorporating transit into what would have been a longer commute by car. And why is it "better" to give a handful of residents free street parking than it is to encourage transit use?

I have no problem with restricting parking in busy, dense neighbourhoods, but this stretch of Cambie isn't one of them.

The wooden plank is an ugly mess at Burrard Station, it is blocking a walkway, not to mention the view of the greenery and the fountain, only an idiot would have ever put it there.

Public art is great if it is not in the friggin way, that thing is essentially a wall slicing a room in half, notice that the statues near Denman were put on the lawn, not on the road?

The images along the escalators are fine.
Keeping my response simple, Metro, I think that the board blocking the view of the park is stupid, ugly, and counter to the "greening" of Vancouver. Case closed

Yes we are, hehe. It is a shame because I have always felt that Burrard is one of our nicest stations when in comes to landscaping. Essentially is already has its own public art, decent gardens and a fountain.

Things to do at night:
- get rid of Burrard Station "art"
- chop down Robson Square bushes
- cut down trees in the North Shore, to form semi-permanent Olympic rings

I'll salt the earth where those trees have been cut for the rings to ensure trees won't start growing for years to come.
