^Sorry, that won't happen for a long time. H&M will be in City Centre before it takes up a streetfront address on Jasper.

which would be welcomed but my god we have such a lack of street front retail downtown.

True. But we also don't have the critical mass to support these corporate name brands yet. This will happen when a) employment and resident population increases and b) existing major corridors densify / redevelop / gentrify. We are starting to see this evolution with the addition of Starbucks, Subway, Second Cups and other smaller higher quality independents along Jasper and other major corridors.

Not if the Jasper Avenue plan has anything to do with it

it's a pretty sad addition to what is supposed to be an up and coming trendy street. laughable actually. compared to other cities like calgary or seattle it's very sad.

i've lost hope for this city's modern architecture (save a few exceptions like aga, for example).

it'll likely stay that way for a while. you need 104th street to really develop, and jasper west to first. you'll sooner see a streetfront for a big chain clothing shop like h&m on whyte ave, or alberta ave or 124th st after revitalization.

It's coming along. There will be open houses in about 6-7 weeks on the draft plan. Keep an eye out.

Edmontonenthusiast, I kinda agree with you regarding some of the designs that are being approved... seeing the Icon from the back, it looks horrid. But I think if enough momentum in construction continues, we'll see further improvements in design, and these new structures will compliment the newer buildings we have such as Icon.

But, I wanted to say, and ask everyone - what the HELL is with all the white?

Raintree,
Opus,
Founders Ridge,
Icon,
Etc...

PLEASE! Let's see some buildings that utilize glass and a base colour! No more primarily white/insert-glass-colour-here towers!!!

...and we just renewed our Indy tickets & pit passes for next year!

Airport closure prolonged
Council moves to delay shutting down City Centre's runway until after the 2010 Rexall Indy and Airfest

By RICHARD LIEBRECHT, SUN MEDIA

Last Updated: 1st October 2009, 3:04am

Two events have been saved, but at least one councillor says there are stall tactics in play over the closure of the City Centre Airport.

"That is the case with some first-term councillors. They're looking for opportunities to delay the closure, and this is one of them. I respect that, there are different political views," said Coun. Amarjeet Sohi. "But we made a decision to close the airport. It should be about accommodation, helping businesses relocate."

Council moved to delay closure of City Centre's runway 16-34 until the 2010 Rexall Edmonton Indy and the 2010 Airfest run their course.

Both are already well into planning for next year.

There's no firm timeline, but plans were to close the airport's other runway in the next 15-35 years to make way for commercial and residential development.

TOOK A STAND

"This year it almost seems there's too much of a rush. We had to take a stand," said Tom Hinderks, executive director of the Alberta Aviation Museum Association, operator of Airfest.

He said he's happy with the delayed decision, though the museum has avoided passing judgment on the airport shutdown.

But Coun. Jane Batty said she worries one delay begets another.

"I can't help but feel if we allow this motion to pass," said Batty of a Ron Hayter motion that was later watered down and passed, "there will be one more event that will come forward to delay closing the runway. It's definitely time to get on with it."

But it seems a commitment on keeping the Indy rolling was made months ago.

The Indy track doesn't intersect that particular runway, airport spokesman Traci Bednard said in July.

RACE WILL GO ON

"The race will continue this year, obviously, and we will continue to honour what's in our contract."

Councillors also posed questions on nearby developments at NAIT, and new highrises allowed on Jasper Avenue after flights cease, said Coun. Ed Gibbons. But he said he expected those questions to arise and doesn't believe they will delay the closing.

"It's the start of a process," he said.

Was the decision to close the CCA a legally binding decision?

^When Council approved the bylaw. The next step was to determine a timeline for closure.

From the ECA:

Project Information:EAST CAMPUS VILLAGE - TENDER PACKAGE II (U OF A)

Project Description:
This is a four building student housing project totaling 170 apartments plus additional common rooms for the University of Alberta - building 4 is modular so anything to do specifically related to building 4, other than the concrete structure and associated waterproofing is not included in this package. Tender Package II is the balance of trades/suppliers that were not included in Tender Package I. TP-I scopes included: building excavation & backfill, concrete foundations, weeping tile not including waterproofing, wood framing and associated lumber products.
Trades/suppliers are to bid on a per building basis.
► Due to the tight schedule- students to be in residence prior to fall 2010 session, each building will have each segment of construction happen at the same time. For instance, with drywall there would be 3 separate drywall crews working on a different building, some or all of which could be working for the same drywall company.
