Two events have been saved, but at least one councillor says there are stall tactics in play over the closure of the City Centre Airport.
"That is the case with some first-term councillors. They're looking for opportunities to delay the closure, and this is one of them. I respect that, there are different political views," said Coun. Amarjeet Sohi. "But we made a decision to close the airport. It should be about accommodation, helping businesses relocate."
Council moved to delay closure of City Centre's runway 16-34 until the 2010 Rexall Edmonton Indy and the 2010 Airfest run their course.
Both are already well into planning for next year.
There's no firm timeline, but plans were to close the airport's other runway in the next 15-35 years to make way for commercial and residential development.
TOOK A STAND
"This year it almost seems there's too much of a rush. We had to take a stand," said Tom Hinderks, executive director of the Alberta Aviation Museum Association, operator of Airfest.
He said he's happy with the delayed decision, though the museum has avoided passing judgment on the airport shutdown.
But Coun. Jane Batty said she worries one delay begets another.
"I can't help but feel if we allow this motion to pass," said Batty of a Ron Hayter motion that was later watered down and passed, "there will be one more event that will come forward to delay closing the runway. It's definitely time to get on with it."
But it seems a commitment on keeping the Indy rolling was made months ago.
The Indy track doesn't intersect that particular runway, airport spokesman Traci Bednard said in July.
RACE WILL GO ON
"The race will continue this year, obviously, and we will continue to honour what's in our contract."
Councillors also posed questions on nearby developments at NAIT, and new highrises allowed on Jasper Avenue after flights cease, said Coun. Ed Gibbons. But he said he expected those questions to arise and doesn't believe they will delay the closing.
"It's the start of a process," he said.
