I'm not realy sure what the construction is for but my guess it's related to the city's infrastructure with the polluted "Clear Creek" as well as the rail lines a.k.a the Beltline. As for Ansley Mall, the dreaded mattress store has been open for some time in the former Chapter 11 Books location and the former Morrison's is being turned into the new home of The Cook's Warehouse. The CW is moving from the Amstersdam Ave shops where it began.

tech,

it's a good get. CB2 isn't expensive like Space or Ligne Roset.

i think it fits the area. but it can't be good news for Yes.

you are right that we need more variety. the only two stores that can detonate foot traffic on Peachtree are Apple and Whole Foods. not likely to see them until the economy recovers.

CB2 is not nearly as expensive as the other furniture and home accessory stores in the area... they sell modern furniture and accessory items perfect for the condo and loft dwellers that live in Midtown. We bought a nice set of plates from CB2 a few years back and use them every day.

CB2 is to Crate & Barrel what West Elm is to Pottery Barn.

I'm extremely excited that Atlanta has landed this quality tenant. Personally, I think another H&M would make sense along the Midtown Mile. And I think we all agree an Apple Store would be awesome! Hoping that this is the first of many more retail announcements we'll be hearing in the next couple months.

Agreed. I've gotten their catalogs in the mail and they're even cheaper than the regular Crate and Barrel.

Hope this is a sign of things to come.

I agree. And unlike what is already on Peachtree, getting CB2 brings some attention to Midtown as a possible retail destination. They're in some very high profile locations around the country. Hopefully, this will be like the first domino to fall but with so few retailers expanding at the moment, it could be slow going for a while yet.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the height of the tallest radio antenna in Midtown?

kinda depressing to see the tear Dallas is on culturally while we get the college football HOF

Wyly Theatre House (Koolhaas)
http://www.dtcinfo.org/Page.aspx?WP_ID=1492

Winspear Opera House (Norman Foster)
http://www.dallasopera.org/the_company/winspear.php

brilliant idea putting the opera house *near* the arts center instead of the suburbs.

meanwhile, we can't even have a symphony hall for one of the best symphonies in the world...

forget NYC, we're not even in Dallas' league.

I believe that the tallest tower is roughly 1400 feet.

As far as private and , to lesser degree , public support for the arts, you are on very firm ground with your comments. However, IF Atlanta's poobahs can can get their act in order regarding the Woodruff Arts Center, all bets are off!

The Woodruff campus has the potential to be the leading arts complex in the south-including Texas- and one of the best in the world: Anne Cox Chambers, age 91 , has a net worth well north of $12 billion. Several of the prominent developers/ tycoons such as Tom Cousins have substantial private art collections. If the right leadership is found to tap into these and other resources, Atlanta 's arts village, as the Woodruff Arts masterplan dubs their holdings, would not only become a primary luminary in the world arts galaxy but it would serve as a catalyst for the further development of Midtown Atlanta as a el primo urban enclave.

That wikipedia article is incorrect. Someone has confused the short STL tower at WSB's Midtown studio with the height of the WSB-TV transmitter antenna near Freedom Pkwy. The 1075' transmitter antenna is not self-supported.

My bad--I must have confused the TBS tower height with a show I watched talking about a taller tower somewhere in the Midwest. I'd go with Emporis, which has it at 1,031 feet.

I completely agree! Upon a recent visit to Dallas I was blown away by this city. The investment in the infrastructure there is amazing. And on top of the expanding arts scene they are under construction on new parks downtown, the green and orange lines of their rail system. We should look to them to see how they can get things done. Considering they are able to have a running trolley line and commuter rail line and all we do in Atlanta is studies on the idea and argue about it.

At the risk of starting a flame war, I would like to add some context to your comments which I believe are overly critical of Atlanta but your opinion none the less.
First, all of the construction in Uptown Dallas is after the fact when compared to the just completed( and ironically soon to resemble Dallas in the 1980's) construction in Buckhead. The new downtown parks are all more than 15 years behind Atlanta's downtown park expansion and creation. Marta is 15 years Dart's senior in terms of rail albeit on entirely different platforms. Most of these improvements occurred in the 1990-96 run up to the Centennial Olympic Games.

Dallas, as I noted in another post on this subject , is clearly ahead of Atlanta with their arts district's improvement. Period. Now you may not have been around when a lot of the things I mentioned occurred but those who fail to read history ..... .
Atlanta is poised for another round of expansion although on a more planned basis IF we can get progressive and inclusive leadership in State and local government. And last, Dallas and Atlanta were fierce competitors in the last century but the Olympics changed all of that and now they have a vision for their city's 21st century profile and Atlanta has another. The global economy has,IMHO, made a lot of the comparison moot because Atlanta's competition today is more Dubai than Dallas.

Thanks Micropundit for putting this high regard for Dallas in historical context.

Atlanta's rail transit started nearly two decades before Dallas and carries nearly four times as many weekday passengers. I understand people's anguish for the current state of progressiveness when it comes transportation, arts, parks, etc in Atlanta. This sluggish attention to such issues has never really been Atlanta's mission or vision of itself. I only hope that is temporary thing. But don't negate things that Atlanta has done years ago with things that some cities (such as Dallas) are only now doing and try to make a point based on that narrow perspective.

Let's not forget dallas, like Dubai, has deep pockets from Texas tea. Some of the biggest corporate sponsors of Atlanta's cultural scene have been hit hard with this economic downturn (Delta, John Weiland, Coke, ect.). Once the economy turns around so will the corporate donations.

Uh Oh: Buckhead ESPN Zone Closes

UPDATED: ESPN Zone in Buckhead closes
3:07 pm October 1, 2009, by Richard Eldredge

This just in: Formula PR, the El Segundo, Calif-based media reps for Buckhead’s ESPN Zone have confirmed to Buzz that the sports-themed eatery has closed.

In a statement just emailed to Buzz Central, operators cite the current economy for the shuttering:

Dominic Minniti, general manager, Disney Regional Entertainment: “We have enjoyed being a part of the Buckhead business community for nearly ten years. The overall economics of continuing this operation has given us no option but to close.”

Added Rick Alessandri, senior vice president, ESPN, who oversees Zone operations for ESPN: “A decision like this is never easy. We recognize and appreciate the commitment and years of service of all of these employees. Unfortunately, the current economic environment offered us no other choice.”

Company reps tell us the sports-themed restaurant that first opened its doors here in January 2000 had approximately 140 employees. Today those workers received “a 60 day administrative leave package.”
