I purchased a book from that comic book store! He has fantastic items!! I highly recommend it to anyone, even if you are not into comics he has abstract books which are very well done. As well he has a noguchi sofa which is one of the most well designed pieces of interior furniture on the face of the planet

Scratch looks amazing!! Maybe this will finally give rise to decent CLUBS in Saskatoon, I capitalized clubs b/c really we do not have one besides Divas. Every other one is just a trashy hole in the wall (minus Bacchus). Hopefully we will see more establishments like this opening up downtown!!

Is the cupcake place by chance Crave? They really do have the most epic cupcake, but I'm sure whatever this place is called they will have one which rivals Craves. Places like these are what make pedestrian shopping streets really exciting and novelty. Not everyone is out to by shoes and jacket, some may want a comic or cupcake!

I missed the opening of Scratch but found myself downtown with friends last Friday night, just after 10pm, looking for a restaurant where we could visit (not a club that'd be too loud to talk). We initially were pretty excited about the new location of New Island Sushi, but alas they close at a painful 9:30pm every night. How about Saskatoon Asian Restaurant? Closed. Taverna? Closed. Um.... Ding Dong? Closed. WTH? Dejectedly, we ended up at Olympia... a "Greek" restaurant with enough nods to Chinese culture inside to reveal its true ownership, methinks.

So this got me to wondering. For all the mania about Saskatoon's downtown rebirth, what is there for me downtown on a Friday night after 10pm if it doesn't involve loud music? After Friday rehearsal, we'd like to go out to visit.

Any suggestions? As well, does anybody know of places open REALLY late, or 24 hours, for that matter?

I'm a big fan of barking fish, modern, food is pretty good, very loungy, but then again they do play music a bit loud after 10pm on a friday.
but they are open late and i think their food is available till midnight or later.

Same with Flint if your into sharing tapas.

Freehouse is always a favourite. Normally the first place I take out of towners to show off the city...and the bes!

Wouldn't the Ivy or 2nd Ave grill be open? Perhaps the barking fish? The only 24 hour restaurants I know of are Olympia and Denny's, less then desireable establishments, oh and trusty old mcdonalds.

I think for downtown restaurants/pubs open later would be, The Freehouse, O'Shea's, Tusq, Earls, ... only 4 blocks or so from Scratch...

Anyone remember Elephant & Castle? What a dump that place was. I mean it was kind of decent but the food was aweful, no wonder it closed down...

I think the options will greatly improve for that area once, 'if', river landing gets built. There should be some good ground level restaurants and pubs that will be cool.

You go downtown or to broadway on weekends and it's tough to find a seat these days....

I thought of all of those places but the freehouse is to loud after 10, O'sheas is just crammed with drunk people, Tusq to loud and Earls, well that is a good one, but not close to anything, maybe one day 2nd ave will extend all the way to earls, IMAGINE THE SELECTION *insert druling smiley here*

My first thought was Flint and BarKing Fish, as well. I know BarKing can get a little loud on weekend evenings, but still has a cool vibe. Flint is less noisy and really 'cosmopolitan' (martini pun fully intended). The other newer option downtown is Tusq or Staccato lounge (can't remember which is restaurant and which is lounge name).

The other frustrating thing with dining downtown is Sunday evenings. There is nothing open except the hotels on a Sunday evening....yes, some people DO like to eat out on a Sunday. (you would also think convention/hotel patrons would create downtown business on a Sunday...either they are arriving or leaving)

6twelve is a fabulous lounge that normally flies under the radar,
next to freehouse in the sheraton
very modern, great food and chill beats

Well I managed to get out to New Island Sushi today at lunch and I was suitably impressed! Until now I've been frustrated by sushi in Saskatoon cause it's either too small, too expensive, too slow, wonky hours, or bad decor. I guess I was giving up on the hours thing by going for sushi lunch, but New Island seems to have a great restaurant at that fateful location downtown. (3rd & 22nd)

Not to get off topic here, but it's like Saskatoon's undergoing a sushi awakening recently. A couple of years ago there was Otowa, Sushiro, and Charlie's. Then came Yohei. The first New Island opened on Circle Drive less than a year ago, and now there's a second one. A few months ago I thought I saw an ad for a new sushi place in the Midtown food court (shudder), and now I see something called Go For Sushi that's coming into being in Grosvenor Mall. This is a good thing, I think. Does this increase Saskatoon's sophistication?

I hear your shudder re: the Midtown food court sushi, but it's actually not bad (and reasonably priced). There's also a sushi house downtown on 22nd behind the Starbucks.

I lived in Toronto during the 90s and Santiago in 2000/2001 making the current sushi awakening in this town the third I have lived through. Ain't I just the cat's ass.

Don't forget the Ivy in the warehouse district. Great lounge, and you can actually find parking. There's also Octane and Joe Dawg's, both of which I would not recommend.

Santiago, Chile? I tried sushi a couple of times there, in Altas Condes... seemed to be rich on the creamed cheese... (GONG!)

Best sushi ever, to date: LA Farmer's Market, go fig. Maybe I was just happy to be there.

The Sushi at New Island (downtown location) is excellent. I'll have to try Sushiro again to see if it's up to that standard, haven't been there in a while.

There appears to be yet another sushi place opening. "Go For Sushi" on 8th where Sew and Home was.

Thank you, Macca, for replying! It always seems like my posts on this board are conversation killers, with 2 days of silence following my last post. (but what can I expect, talking about sushi on a construction forum).

So anyway, how bout 3rd Ave? The new Century Plaza (?) building is looking much nicer since they finished the glass exterior, and the west side (at least) of the street is ripped up and being reconstructed. Did they have plans to complete the refurb work on that block this year? With snow forecast later this week?

Discovery Plaza (DiscoPlaz for short). I would reply to your posts, but I don't like sushi.

I'm not sure exactly how much progress on the streetscape has been made, but it looks like the above-ground utilities between 21st and 22nd have been moved underground.
