Again... WHY?!?!?! It is a beautiful building that IMO is nicer than the proposed due to its classic design. Renovate it and make it anew.

They haven't decided whether they will keep the existing tower or not.

Nice. I like how bright & airy it is... so many airports seem dark and cavernous. I see the existing tower is still there in the renders. Honestly, I can't see why the'd demo it.. it would cost as much to demo as it would to refit and they'll need the space eventually...

bingo... a hotel in there would be very cool... just add an addition for conference facilities or keep a floor or two for that.

The existing tower is outdated and now an eyesore. IMO it is not architecturally significant. I am for demolishing it. A new hotel could fit nicely inside the curve of the new to be built US dept wing with connection over the road to an expanded parkade.

I like the look and the interior colours and the light. Better that the institutional white in TO.

The existing tower should become a hotel but you'd need to add another elevator.

There looks to be an extra (future) pier on the parkade side of the hammerhead.

I'd also like to see the expansion, yet again of the parkade.

It feels weird not to be working on this reno/addtion. I've worked on all the expansions for both YEG and YYC.

Well they are 747-100s (with the three top deck windows), could be old Wardair planes :p

Those brown swoopy things sure look like the architects have taken their inspiration from aircraft evacuation slides...which might not be the best message.

Northern airline Canadian North announced Thursday it is cancelling and scaling back some of its routes, in part because a saturated market in Yellowknife.

Canadian North said it is cancelling flights from Yellowknife to Calgary effective Oct. 10 and cutting flights to Hay River, N.W.T., as of Oct. 25.

The Yellowknife-based airline cites a slowdown in the oil and gas industry in its decision to end the Calgary flights, and not enough passengers on the Hay River flights.

Airlines 'flooded' local market
Canadian North is also reducing the number of flights between Edmonton and Yellowknife as of Oct. 25, blaming competition from Air Canada Jazz and WestJet, which offer similar flights at discount prices.

"They flooded the market with excess capacity. It's created some phenomenal deals for Yellowknife consumers, for sure, but it's not sustainable and it doesn't really contribute to our total northern air service network," Canadian North president Tracy Medve told CBC News on Thursday.

"We are vulnerable to the exploitation of those high-traffic routes by competitors who don't share our commitment to the North."

Canadian North will eliminate Flight 423, which flies five mornings a week from Yellowknife to Edmonton, effective Oct. 25.

It will also reduce Flight 422, which flies from Edmonton to Yellowknife, from six evenings a week to five.

'Can't ride an airplane for cabfare'
Air Canada Jazz began flying to and from Yellowknife in 2006, offering direct flights between the N.W.T. capital and Edmonton and Calgary.

WestJet entered the Yellowknife airline market with similar flight offerings in the summer.

Medve said WestJet's arrival in the N.W.T. has amounted to 4,900 seats a week, with less than half of them being used.

"The fares that are out there are very low, and it got to the point where there were fares in the market at $55 one-way between Edmonton and Yellowknife. Well, if you've ever taken a taxi cab between the airport in Edmonton to downtown, it's about the same price," she said.

"So surely it's understandable that you can't ride an airplane for cabfare. You know, that's not sustainable."

Layoffs coming in Yellowknife
Five Canadian North employees in Hay River are losing their jobs, including two full-time positions and three part time, as the airline closes its base in the community.

The airline says it will lay off more staff in Yellowknife, although officials don't know how many.

AC to LHR circa 1995 on a 747-200 or 400 if i recall, but yah sat in the nose.

Canadian to LHR circa 1988, although it may have been a DC-10

In the 80's AC offered service to London on an L-1011
Wardair offered weekly service to Honolulu with a 747 (may have been more frequent)

YEG 747's of past and present.

AC YYC-YEG-LHR was a 747-200 in the early to mid 90's flying daily at one point.

Wardair YEG-FRA was a 747-100 up until the airlines demise, also the YEG-MAN route that was flown seasonally in the mid to late 80's was a 747-100.They also flew the 747's on the YEG-HNL flights during the winter.

Currently 747's are a odd ball.But Atlas and Polar both bring them in for ''horse'' charters to Japan usually from Jan to March on a weekly basis.those are typically the 747-400F's.
