Yes, those are for welding purposes. You can usually see them weld at night. I'm guessing the tarp is also there for welding in the rain. Thy're starting to form the mechanical floor right now, so the columns have to be up to full strength.

The contract documents state that the site may or may not be closed for work on 9-11, but plan on no work.

At the bottom of the three communications rings is a huge track for the window washing cranes. Also, the fact that the MTVA backed out of the deal does NOT affect all the cell phone and microwave etc. antennas to be installed on the communications rings. I fully expect that structure to be built as currently designed. DCM was already awarded the contract to fab and erect it and I have not herd of any changes. There are alot of company's that want there stuff on top of the tallest building in NYC.

PS: lets hope the rain doesn't come and the wind doesn't get any stronger.

It's called "decking" and that's good news. It's the first step in putting a floor slab in.

You know I've been looking at this site for several months now and I finally figured out what the heck is going on. Wow...so they are going to put those collumns up and once they connect them all they can start building the floors on top of that. I cannot believe I didn't know this sooner!

In all fairness, the complexity of underground work has been mind-boggling.

I would think that the tarps are more for protection of passers by who may inadvertantly look at the welding without a mask on.

Here's a picture I put together showing how the memorial plaza site has changed since 9-11 last year, trying to place the current image as closely as possible over where last year's memorial was held. Look at serrated wall at the bottom of the first two pictures for reference. Massive progress!

Meanwhile a circle-of-remembrance thingie (no disrespect intended) has been set up for this year to the far left of the plaza with widened access path extending to the street.

Big Red has been put to sleep and the extra catwalks stowed, as the winds have been picking up.

Larry Silverstein has a point. It's not going to take forever for the economy to rebound, and by the time the office towers are completed by their proposed dates of 2037, there will more or likely be jobs elsewhere. I mean, they can't leave two holes in the ground, nor retail stumps, there's too much infrastructure at stake.

My god, it took them one year to build all of that on the memorial since they removed the ramp. They've been hauling ass!

To all the pessimists who have been doubting the World Trade Center(despite it's setbacks) things are definitely looking up for the memorial.

Back on topic, I expect the column-a-day schedule to start up by next week monday since they park the cranes for the weekend.

I was hoping for a positive story about how much incredible work has been done up to this point and remembering those who died in the attack. Instead we got this crap about 'delays delays delays'. Who f***ing cares? Oh and those exclusive never allowed to be seen until now shots were pathetic. NYguy does a better job taking shots and so does everyone else who's contributed. What an annoying video.

Stamford man is consultant on WTC rebuilding

By Magdalene Perez
09/10/2009

Quote:
The first time John Mallozzi stepped onto the One World Trade Center construction site, he experienced a heady mix of emotions.

The Stamford resident and engineer was hired to advise on concrete shoring at the building, one of the first to rise from the ashes of the former World Trade Center after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Collavino Construction, a subcontractor at One World Trade Center, hired Mallozzi about six months ago to consult on concrete shoring and re-shoring as construction takes place. As workers create the steel structure, concrete has to be poured to support each floor's weight. Mallozzi was brought in as a specialist in temporary shoring and building supports. In his 30 years in construction and engineering, he has worked projects that include Stamford's urban redevelopment under F.D. Rich.

The most interesting part of working on the site was figuring out how to design temporary supports near the foundation that would allow PATH trains running between lower Manhattan and New Jersey to operate below, Mallozzi said. Now finished with that task, his role is working on the concrete core of the building where the elevator and stairs will be.

Mallozzi said the design, led by architect Daniel Libeskind's master plan, provides more security than the former towers in the event of a similar attack.

"The way this building is designed now, there is no way the same thing could happen that happened before," Mallozzi said. "The core would be able to stand by itself even if the rest of the building fell away, and the people would be able to get out."

John Mallozzi, of Stamford, a member of the board of representatives, is a structural engineer working at the Freedom Tower site in New York.
He signs an American flag at the site on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009.

Ground Zero progress: World Trade site rebuilding effort finally showing progress
BY Douglas Feiden
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Thursday, September 10th 2009, 5:20 PM

Maisel/Newshe
site of the new World Trade Center and 9/11 Memorial are already taking shape on the huge construction site.

The toughest construction job on Earth - the rebuilding of the World Trade Center - is finally showing dramatic signs of progress on the eighth anniversary of the attacks of 9/11.

Giant steel beams framing the iconic 1,776-foot Freedom Tower have soared 105 feet above street level - and enough concrete has been poured into the Sept. 11 Memorial to pave 100 miles of New York City sidewalks.

Long on the defensive for shredding its budget and bungling reconstruction with multi-year delays, the Port Authority invited the Daily News to tour Ground Zero to trumpet its breakthroughs on the 16-acre site.

Accomplishment No. 1: The twin waterfalls, fountains and reflecting pools that define the Memorial are emerging as majestic works of art, while the still-unfinished plaza is ready for the first time to host the victims' families for Friday's observances.

How critical is a timely completion of the Memorial by the 10th anniversary on Sept. 11, 2011?

"All else pales in comparison," PA Executive Director Chris Ward told The News.

Also gracing the site is the "East-West Connector," a striking subterranean passageway 60 feet below the streets of lower Manhattan that will revolutionize the way tens of thousands of New Yorkers commute to their jobs.

A pedestrian shortcut that will transverse the World Trade Center site, its signature element is 55 soaring arches designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

The PA has already installed 47 of those arches, which will tower above the luminous quarter-mile walkway between the Fulton St. subways and the World Financial Center, officials say.

"A year ago, people were still calling the site a pit," Ward said after a PA board meeting Thursday.

"Well, it's not a pit anymore."

Despite visible progress on the site, there are no completed buildings, terminals or other structures: The budget-busting delays that have dragged on for eight years, fueled by endless squabbling between the PA and developer Larry Silverstein, have taken their toll.

I'm an optimist, but good God, Really!?!?! 2019 for Freedom Tower? and 2037 for the rest of the site? I don't think I want to watch this site go up for 28 more years! That seems totally unacceptable, I don't care how much political bs is involved.

Seems like negative BS. Key word: "Fully Occupied" Their may be unfinished floors waiting decades for tenants.

They're just talking about that same report we discussed earlier, which was someone's "estimate" of when the towers would be fully leased. We can all make our own estimates at this point. No one really knows when these towers would be fully leased, but maybe they were using the magic 8-ball when they got those numbers. However, I would stick to the people who would know as far as completion timetables go, the Port Authority in the case of the Freedom Tower and Larry Silverstein in the case of the others.
