Don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of sprawl either. I am just saying that; if the reason for being against sprawl is beacause it takes away farmland, that is a joke because there is plenty.

If you're against sprawl because it makes people rely more on their automobiles, then I am with you. But if your going to plan to cram 25,000 people in the southeast corner of the city when nearly everyone works in the northwest and downtown it doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense to have 8 units per acre because people are still relying on their automobiles.

So what I am saying is you could make neighbourhoods the way you always have 4 units per acre or whatever, because it will actually = more greenspace which is good. But to take people away from automobiles is a different answer.

The answer would likely be to cram 25,000 people downtown. Or build a mass transit system which would be super costly which we could not afford.

Lake Placid Makes Deadline
Friday, 28 August 2009

Lake Placid Development has met its first deadline. They have made their interest payment of two hundred 14 thousand, one hundred 97 thousand dollars.

This means they have met the terms of their extension deadline with the city. The deadline for receipt of those funds was close of business on August 31st.

Because they met that requirement, Lake Place Developments is now entitled to an extension for full payment on River Landing Village.

At a special meeting with council earlier this month, Michael Lobsinger, CEO of Lake Placid Developments, had said they were waiting on money from investors in Europe, who ran into delays from the economic crisis. (vmf Aug 28/09)

Except I don't really know how much "two hundred 14 thousand, one hundred 97 thousand dollars" is. Is it 214,000,197,000? If you're going to write out two hundred thousand and 14 dollars when you're writing out numbers why not just write $214,197.00?

There's a whole lot of digging to be done before a crane goes up.

Yeah, I too will refrain from hijacking the thread. As was stated, we could discuss the subject for days, and the chances of reconciling our difference of opinions are slim to none.

Returning to normal discussion...

Stoneset Equities Ltd. Quarterly Report
Second Quarter 2009
Saskatoon Project – Saskatoon, SK

• Preliminary drawings for the concept, were completed by ONPA, an architectural firm in Edmonton, and
approved by the Lighthouse Group who will be managing the affordable housing units for Saskatchewan
Housing Corporation.

• A detailed costing estimate was prepared by KDL Consulting, a cost consultant firm from the City of Saskatoon
on the approved concept plans

• The cost estimate on the concept plan which was derived from the program provided by Saskatchewan Housing
Corporation and the Lighthouse Group increased from the original estimate done by Stoneset in April of 2008 of
@$18,000,000 to @$23,300,000. Even though Stoneset was given the approval to proceed with their original
$18,000,000 budget, the budget from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation was reduced from @$15,000,000
down to @$13,000,000 and with the cost estimate of @$23,300,000 to build the affordable housing units to the
proposed program would leave a financial shortfall of @$10,300,000.

• Numerous meetings with representatives of Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, the Lighthouse Group, the
City of Saskatoon and the Minister of Housing have taken place to discuss what options would be available to
address the @$10,300,000 shortfall. At a meeting in May, a request was made for Stoneset to provide a
detailed cost breakout of all the components of the affordable housing portion of the project. This was
completed at the end of May and was submitted accordingly. Stoneset is currently waiting for a response as to
whether Saskatchewan housing will proceed with the project in its entirety or that a new program will need to be
prepared to match the funding that they have available.

Would love to credit the photo but unsure of the source.

Like many projects it falls on the wait-and-see list.

I'm all for the lighthouse project but man do they have one horrid colour scheme, it really is kind of a tragic building. In a way I'm hoping it doesn't go through so something more architecturally stimulating will be built, but who am I kidding if this isn't built then some heap of junk designed and built by Remai will go up in its place.

"Petcetera" out... the "New Petcetera" in...

I drove by the old Petcetera store yesterday at The Centre wondering what they were doing with it now that the pet shop moved out... and it seems the same pet shop is opening AGAIN, just with something a little "New"... give me a break!! Liquidate your assets (discounting them of course), let your staff go, rip down all your P.O.P., stack everything in one corner of the store, and then... re-brand by adding "New"... way to go Petcetera... what were you thinkin'? The below release states we won't hear anything more on store openings until later September.

Canada's best and worst run cities

This survey, the first of its kind in Canada, provides citizens in 31 cities across the country with comparative data on how well-or poorly-their city is run, measured by the cost and quality of the public services it delivers. (Why 31? We took the 30 largest cities in Canada, added whatever provincial capitals were not on the list, then subtracted a few cities from the Greater Toronto Area for better regional balance. Somehow that left 31.)

Though the overall results-Burnaby, Saskatoon and Surrey, B.C. lead the pack; Charlottetown, Kingston, Ont., and Fredericton trail-will be of particular interest, they are less important than the process this is intended to kick off. We aim not merely to start some good barroom arguments, but to help voters to hold their representatives to better account, and indeed to help city governments themselves. For without some sort of yardstick to measure their performance, either against other cities or against their own past record, how can they hope to know whether they are succeeding?

To compile the survey, Maclean's commissioned the Halifax-based Atlantic Institute for Market Studies, expanding on the institute's earlier work measuring the performance of municipalities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Unlike other studies, this does not try to measure quality of life, or which city is the "best place to live." Rather, it focuses on the contribution of local governments to this end.

Saskatoon buildings

What happened to all the great information on this site about buildings and such that is happening in Saskatoon. I would rather read about that than people's personal opinions on other countries and the weather. Anyone have something new on construction here in the city.
