Thank you for the photos. An increasing amount of develpoment spurs curiousity from non-residents. I'm hoping some of you will find the time to capture the changing urban environmet (and post the photos).

Nice photos! Thanks, One_Brick! They show how well Regina is progressing!

Wow! Funny, I drive around downtown from time to time, but I've never noticed how far along Sask Tel's Energy Centre has come along!

We went as a large group on a night that was particularly busy. A couple of quirks that night: My wife's food order was delayed coming out, as our server forgot to enter the order; and my sweet potato fries arrived rather overly-fried (mostly charred black!) -- Twice! -- I sent the first plateful of fries back, but left the burnt ones uneaten the second time around! They were nice about it and offered us a dessert for no additional charge! I'll chalk it up to a very busy night! Overall, very enjoyable!

We've seen them in a booth at some home shows, and they make/cater really fancy, custom and sculpture cakes, gourmet cookies, and fantastic cupcakes which, I think, rivals Crave Cookies and Cupcakes, Buttercream Bake Shoppe in Calgary, Cupcakes in Vancouver, and (K&A's cupcakes) are decorated even more elegantly, each with a generous topping of yummy flavoured buttercream and garnishes and with a great variety of flavours at comparable prices. Now, I wonder if The Cup n' Cake (another Regina caterer) will open a retail location as well! (Now you know how I keep happy! Yummm!)

Nice pics, one brick. Canada Place on 11th ave is cool. They don't build them like that anymore.

I was driving into Regina from Fort Qu'appelle on the friday of the AC\DC concert at around 5 pm and somewhere around the first intersection on vic avenue I hit a wall of traffic and it took a good hour to get to the overpass so I could go north on the ring road. At first I thought it was an accident but it wasn't . I thought it was just people coming in to town for the concert but a friend said it's like that all the time. Is that true? All that development out east sure has bunged up Vic ave. Maybe it's time for the south west bypass highway or maybe a north west bypass.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new multi-purpose stadium in Regina will be based off something like this.

Great photos One_brick, Regina really has alot of beautiful architecture. It's nice to see preserved heritage office buildings. We are lacking heritage architecture in Saskatoon, it really makes for a unique feel within a city!!

Nice billboard btw

Good Earth Coffe House and Bakery is about to open on the main floor of Hill Centre - Tower II. According to their website they also plan locations in Normanview Crossing and Grasslands.

I'm surprised Good Earth Coffee House hasn't updated their site if the McCallum Hill Tower location is about to open. They list other future locations to open but no mention of the Regina location on the site. Sigh.

here's the story in the Leader-Post:

Construction started on Loblaw's distribution centre at Regina's global transportation hub
By Bruce Johnstone, Leader-Post
September 1, 2009 7:01 PM

REGINA — Loblaw’s 500,000-square-foot, $200-million distribution centre is slowly appearing on the horizon west of the city.

Announced with great fanfare in July 2008, the project is the first phase of a projected million-square-foot, $350-million warehouse and distribution facility Loblaw Companies plans to develop on the site.

The Loblaw distribution centre is part of the global transportation hub (GTH), which will also incorporate CP Rail’s intermodal facility. The $93-million project will see the relocation of Cps container yards from Dewdney Avenue to about five km west of Regina International Airport.

Being CP Rail’s largest customer and Canada’s largest food distributor, Loblaw wanted to be located close to CP’s intermodal facility to “optimize our service levels to our stores’’ and “minimize our environmental impact,’’ Jane Marshall, executive vice-president of real estate for Loblaw Companies, said at the time.

Peter McMahon, executive vice-president of supply chain for Loblaw, said Regina was the “ideal location’’ for the distribution centre, which will handle about 1,400 trucks per week. Initially, 500 employees will be employed by the distribution centre, but that could increase to 750 within two years and 1,500 by 2017, McMahon said at the July 2008 press conference.

The sharp increase in traffic at the site also necessitated a major highway infrastructure project by provincial Highways and Infrastructure. The province will spend about $45 million to $50 million upgrading road and highways in the area in and around the GTH.

The infrastructure project will see the expansion of Pinkie Road to connect the Trans-Canada Highway with Highway 11, and improved connections to the City of Regina’s road network.

While Loblaw and CP are the first private sector companies to announce their participation in the global transportation hub, they will by no means be the last, proponents say.

Larry Hiles, president and CEO of the Regina Regional Opportunities Commission (ROC), estimated potential investment in the GTH could exceed $1 billion over the next five or six years.

Contacted Tuesday, Loblaw Companies issued the following statement: “Construction of the future Regina distribution centre, which will be run by a third party operator to support Loblaw Companies Limited’s Western Canada operations, has commenced. Updates regarding the facility will be announced as appropriate.”

The statement was attributed to Inge van den Berg, senior vice-president, corporate affairs, Loblaw Companies Limited, in Toronto.

Just gotta say that I was sitting with a windows view on the right side of the west jet aircraft on my flight back to Toronto today, and the view of Harbour Landing and all the land being developed was just an amazing sight. As well, with one new exit already paved in the lewvan interchange, that was also an awesome picture to see way up in the air!

Busy with babies
By Kerry Benjoe, The Leader-Post September 3, 2009

Saskatchewan is experiencing a different kind of boom, say those who are in the baby business.

"The demand is increasing as the baby boom increases and women are identifying the lack of continuous support in their labours. And (for doulas, women who assist during childbirth) the phones are just ringing off the hook," said Lisa Wass, president of the Prairie Birth Collective.

Sharon Garrett, executive director of women's and children's health for the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region, said that over the past few years there has been a noticeable increase in births.

"While we hit a new peak in the last two months, that's really indicative of the trend," Garrett said. "We are delivering more babies."

According to statistics collected between April 1, 2006, and March 31, 2007, Regina General Hospital delivered 3,081 babies. In 2007-08, during the same time period, there were 3,387 deliveries, and in 2008-09 the hospital performed 3,476 deliveries.

"If we continue the experience of the first five months, there will definitely be more (deliveries) than last year," Garrett said.

As a doula trainer, Wass knows first hand about the increasing demand for doulas.

"The trainers in the province have been doing multiple trainings to try to increase the number of doulas," Wass said, adding there are only two doula trainers in the province.

She estimates there are between 20 to 30 trained doulas who are working full time in Saskatchewan.

"In the past year, there has probably been an additional 60 (doulas) that have been trained," said Wass.

Despite the increase, Garrett said, the hospital has the capacity to meet the demand. She said the hospital monitors the situation very carefully and when needed the hospital calls in more staff. The hospital has 36 beds in the mother baby unit, but it has room to accommodate more beds when necessary, Garrett said.

Business owners have also noticed an increase in traffic through their stores.

Amy Habich and her husband Jason opened Hello Baby in the east end three years ago because they recognized that there was a need for baby products after having their first child. She said the research back then already showed an increasing trend -- one that has continued.

Kim Kezama, of Cozy Cradles and Kids Wear, has been in the business for a decade and has noticed that there are more people having babies or becoming pregnant.

Ronda Sutherland, co-producer of the Regina Baby Expo, said she's noticed that more people are going into the baby product selling business.

I wonder how significantly this impacts the population [growth] of Regina, and Saskatchewan? I imagine Saskatoon is experiencing something similar. Does anybody know the current death and migration rates for our area?
