isn't it a bit ironic that people normally bitch about waiting 5-10mins for a train yet will line up 2-3 hrs to today...

Thanks for that video. I thought that the trains would come in a bit faster than they did. I was thinking about HK's MTR trains, and how fast they come in. Over there, they really do need those platform doors, but it doesn't really seem like it's necessary here, with the speed in which the trains come into each station.

We’ve had 54,000 customers through the first 5 hours.‬

By comparison, Seattle’s Sound Transit had 45,000 for the first fare-free inaugural day of its Sea-Tac Airport extension a month ago.‬

When I got on at Olympic Village today, the signs that announce the next trains were definitely not working properly. My southbound train arrived when the sign was still saying 3 minutes until the next train - hopefully this is just an issue with the modified schedules they're using for today, or something like that?

All the signs i watched were working correctly.

What really struck me the most though was the festive atmosphere. Honestly, i met so many nice people today and chatted with them in the line ups and on the platforms. It was a great community event!

Precisely what I thought.

The displays are by Mitron; finally we invested in the proper company. Mitron does displays for the London Underground.

I got to Waterfront station's line at Sinclair Centre at 3:30 and waited 2 hours to get to the train. We picked the train to YVR. We were packed in like Tokyo style, literally I was jammed against the door and some Chinese grandma grabbed my back so she didn't get hurt.
The only problem is our train was taken out of service at Marine Drive for some reason (overcrowding related?) and we all had to wait on the platforms, and try to jam ourselves into the next trains coming down the line, which were already jammed. About 4 trains later I got to the front of the platform and jammed myself into another train to YVR.
YVR station is very nice, almost as nice as Lougheed or Brentwood.

EVERYONE was talking about how the trains were fantastic and wide, but how the platform is only 40m and how they can't have two trainsets like the other skytrain lines. I heard alot of people talk about how small the platforms are and how if it is this busy today, the line might be like this every day in a few years.

I took off of work early and headed to Yaletown-Roundhouse station around 2:30. I hoped to avoid the crowds but I still waited for one hour and a half. It seemed like the last half hour was especially painful, because it seemed like no trains were moving southbound for a long time.

I was surprised when I finally boarded how empty the train was. There weren't any seats but there was plenty of room to walk around. Not sure why it took so long to get on. I guess they were leaving room for people boarding further south. I was impressed by the speed and smoothness of the ride. The LED destination signs inside the cars were a nice touch.

Got off at Templeton because I heard about the long waits at YVR. That was a wise choice because there was no line up. Going back I got off at King Edward station and then got back on at City Hall where there was no wait going northbound. Waterfront by that time wasn't as busy as the earlier pictures showed, but it was still outside on the Granville plaza. I didn't understand why they weren't kicking people off the train when they got to Waterfront.

Overall I'm happy to have ridden the Canada line on opening day.

Who are these EVERYONE? Honestly, i don't think Deasine and myself heard a single person mention the platforms (we hard many comments about the trains being nice) and we were riding the trains from 1pm to 5/6pm. Do you remember any mention of the platforms (besides between ourselves) Deasine?

That is an awesome pic. Also, I have always loved that civic space (it gives a great view of the ports and cruise ships when they are in dock, the sea bus, WCE, skytrain, etc...) It is a great spot to watch the city. I hope they never take it down for another same old avenue end view of the water. It has a great mix of an industrial, business and artistic feelings.

I probably witnessed the same incident but I was on the platform. 300-plus passengers + 50 additional people already on the platform really nearly filled the entire platform waiting space.

Later this evening I drove to every Richmond stations to get my remaining "Stamps" and to see how bad the line-ups are, and as indicated by buzzerblog post they did start to announce "cut-off" . Finally I dropped off my companions at YVR as they still wanted to try the airport arm of the line, it was about 8:30pm and the lineup at YVR had dispersed. On my way home through Marine Drive station , I still saw teenagers running down to the station , that's near 8:45pm. I hope they could get on the last train to Richmond
