I flew Virgin from NYC-London in 2007 and it was perhaps the best airline flight I've ever had.

I guess we will know more by next week.
As it turns out, Southwest did not prevail in their bid for Frontier, so it looks like they'll be around awhile.

Seems to me that it would be easier to come to Austin than to Dallas or Atlanta since they are hubs. Austin is no hub at least not yet ( Jetblue ).

I doubt Austin would ever be a hub like a Houston or Dallas those airports have direct international flights to Europe and all. I think it would be cool if Jet Blue started direct flights from Austin to like the Dominican Republic or some where in the Carribbean.

Short of getting direct flights to the Carribbean, I would be happy if Jetblue would simply adjust flight schedules some so that we could get connecting flights to most of their Carribbean destinations.

American's St. Louis non-stop will be going away in the next year. http://www.ksdk.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=185214

Wonder if Southwest will pick up that route?

I wouldn't be suprised if Alaska Air picks it up...just like they did when American gave up Seattle and San Jose

American to launch direct service between New York's JFK and Austin-Bergstrom

American to launch direct service between New York's JFK and Austin-Bergstrom
Austin Business Journal

American Airlines parent company AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) is announcing plans Thursday to expand its service in some areas as a result of $2.9 billion in new financing it has recently secured.

One addition to the airline's lineup is a new direct flight between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. That new flight is part of the airline's move to increase its flights out of hubs such as Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.

The airline said the infusion will also help it make improvements to its fleet.

American did not give a start date for the new Austin-New York service. Currently, Jet Blue is the only airline that offers non-stop flights to the New York City area.

“Today’s announcement positions our company well to face today’s industry challenges and allows us to remain focused on the future and on returning to profitability,” said Gerard Arpey, American's chairman and CEO.

Hmm, competing directly with JetBlue. And after AA kind of reversed course on Austin as a "focus city"... wondering what their reasoning for this added service is? Do they expect to capitalize on some international traffic from AUS, or AA frequent fliers?

Do they expect to compete on price? I doubt it, against an airline that just got through offering "all you can fly" for one whole month at $599. Plus, JetBlue has newer planes, personal entertainment systems, just overall a better product (unless you exclusively fly first class).

I don't get it

Doesn't Continental have one or two non stops to Newark out of Bergstrom? Also, doesn't Delta have a non stop to JFK that connects with a lot of their Europeon flights? I may be out of date with my information, so I'd appreciate an update.

Continental flies three daily roundtrips between Austin and Newark. Delta used to have one daily roundtrip between Austin & JFK (on a regional jet) but that hasn't operated for awhile now.

BTW, Dallas is still Austin's top destination (1220 passengers per day fly between the two cities) but New York is #2 (875 people per day) as of Q1 2009.

Doubt that Alaska would pick it up. They don't have any operations in STL. The other two were easy for them. SEA is their hub so service between SEA-AUS was a natural extension of their network. For San Jose they already had considerable operations their and the flight to Austin is actually a PDX-SJC-AUS route. PDX is also an Alaska hub. So again they just hooked us to a hub as a natural extension of the network, this time with an intermediate stop at SJC. I don't think they will be offering an flights to from Austin that don't fit into the existing network.

Delta and Us Airways both have seen increases of 40% and 60% respectively in passengers. What are they doing differently than the other carriers?

Delta's numbers are higher because they absorbed Northwest. No idea on USAir.

I know USAir has added capacity in Austin in the last 12 months. The Austin-Charlotte route used to be twice daily and is now three times daily. This comes at a time when other carriers are reducing capacity. Additionally, US Air has no competition from Southwest on the Charlotte route as Southwest doesn't fly to Charlotte or any nearby airports.

More indications that Virgin America is seriously considering Austin and could be here in 2011.
