Interesting

Edmontons CMA building permit values (YTD as of march 2009) are higher than Vancouvers!

It was reported a few months back that Procura owns that parcel of land with the park and the LRT entrance. The article hinted that they were looking to do a land swap with the city so the park would be preserved. Perhaps Molson Park?

There is (or was) a rendering for a tower on that site from the early 80s posted on Emporis.

For the 23rd Ave project, are they going to be re-paving the roads once the bridges are overpasses are done? I hope they do because they are in rough shape right now.

Anyone heading out onto the QE2 this morning be super careful. There's huge fog patches everywhere. Just got into Red Deer, & saw the worst pileup I've ever seen on this highway... northbound on the bridge across the Red Deer River at least 8 vehicles involved including a couple of semis, cars on fire & crushed up against the guardrail, QE2 northbound completely shut down. It's really bad. I'll be shocked if no one died.

I think more or less what Basil Brush said. I too recall hearing that it was purchased in order to keep it from being developed, in order to be sold back to the city, to keep a patch of green space in the core.

^procura owns it and wants to do a land swap with the city (where i am not sure) so that 'park' can be retained.

Oh I know that was the story, I thought Cold knew what property they wanted to switch for. I guess nothing is confirmed yet, but they have their eye on a few.

Holy —! People should know to slow down when there's thick fog clouding your view of the road ahead.

I thought that the tradeoff of that piece of land had something to do with variances granted for the Mayfair...

i don't believe so... some rumours have this potentially linked with a TOD development.

I have some friends in town from Tor/NYC this week who were originally from here and they had 2 interesting comments last night:

1. "Edmonton seems busier" (this was around downtown/whyte)

more importantly though

2. "it looks the same as it did 5yrs ago"

on point number 2 i would have to agree that we have few really OVERT in your face examples that an avg. person would notice.

we don't have massive developments like in yaletown or cityplace and even calgary has multiple examples of clear changes in look and feel.

it is always interesting to hear what those who used to live here say when they return...

overall though they had more positive then negative and were impressed with the level of activity out and about

^ Given that we spent the last 5 years filling in the huge and numerous empty spaces in existing buildings downtown, I'm hoping the next few years will see some new construction (once the economy recovers blah blah blah).

exactly though... for those not in the know they do not see good news stories like that.

the one friend was recently in calgary and kept letting me know 'how much is going on there' simply because of fewer empty lots and overt signs such as cranes.

we need more overt and less covert

I hate the thought of being "in your face"

I work in construction project management. I have people in my face all the time. It's hardly an admirable quality IMO

Funny, I notice many changes from 5 years ago. Maybe the lack of smug in the air affected your friends' senses Cold.

Yeah, I wish we could build a bunch of empty office buildings as well but frankly yes, there's more going on in Calgary's downtown. At this particular moment in time.

i'll disagree - the last thing we need is something like eighth avenue place building 1.1 million square feet of office space in a soft market with none of it leased... i'll take successfully covert over overt disasters in a heartbeat.

Agree 100% Ken.

Up to a 20% vacancy rate over the next two years ? That's an awful lot of office towers sitting empty... They can keep that down there thanks.
