I'd rather see any new addition to the telus world of science to remain on site. it's not in a bad spot, and it would be nice to keep it all on one campus. Perhaps block the view of the latest addition?

Is WEM phase IV considered an expansion? Apart from the Silver City theatre they built on top everything else was reclaimed space from the vacant Bay/Woodwards store that was the original phase III.

Londonderry expansion started in late 90 and completed in late 92.
Kingsway expansion was between 88 and 90.
I think Millwoods Town Center Mall opened in 88 or 89 aswell.

yes it is. I check MLS last night, and sure enough the resale of units has started. Which I don't think they will fair too well as they will be competing with new units which are customizable, deals on units that people backed out of, and asking prices that are higher then the current market warrents.

Edmonton building permits slip by 2.4 per cent

EDMONTON — Building permits slipped in Edmonton in June by 2.4 per cent to $230.8 million, Statistics Canada said Thursday.

That moderate monthly dip bucked a provincial trend which saw the value of permits in Alberta fall by 24 per cent from May — only Saskatchewan fell further at 29.3 per cent.

“Alberta and Saskatchewan posted the largest declines, largely due to lower construction intentions in the non-residential sector,” said the federal agency.

While Alberta’s residential building permits climbed nearly 11 per cent in June over May, non-residential permits dropped 38.6 per cent.

Calgary fared worse than the provincial average; its June building permits were down 33 per cent.

Nationally, building permits rose unexpectedly in June, rising one per cent to $5.2 billion, Statistics Canada said.

“The increase was attributable to gains in both residential and non-residential construction intentions,” the federal agency said.

Economists had expected permits to decline by about three per cent in June. The May increase in permit values was revised to 17.5 per cent from the agency’s previous estimate of 14.8 per cent.

Statistics Canada said gains were recorded in seven provinces, with some of the biggest increases coming in British Columbia (up 30.3 per cent) and Quebec (up 11 per cent), where permits were issued across all sectors.

Among major centres, the biggest gains came in Montreal (up 36.9 per cent) and Hamilton (up 289.3 per cent).

This is terrible and completely unacceptable. We all know new building permit values must stay between 5-10 Billion dollars at all times. Wish Calgary could be more like Hamilton, damn.

The wife, who works for an NGO, received an interesting email today:

North America’s Largest Eco City and Clean Technology Community Given Green Light

Rampart’s Avenir™ achieves green living without lifestyle compromises

6 August 2009: Pre-Development and planning has begun on Rampart’s Avenir™, North America’s largest Clean Technology city and ecological community. The eco city will be located in the Capital Region area of the province of Alberta, Canada and aims to act as a large-scale testing platform for new clean technologies.

Rampart’s Avenir™, a 1.6 billion dollar project, will be home to 8,000 people and will encompass cutting edge technological and R&D business and industry facilities, an educational campus, recreational parks and vast agricultural areas.

Rampart’s Avenir™ aims to attract the world's leading clean technology developers as well as R&D branches and product development teams through a tailored environment that will support their work and their ability to test new ideas.

Uniquely, Rampart’s Avenir™ will be a community of residents, who are using and evaluating the products being developed within the Avenir community and comparing these products to traditional utility services. The clean technology products will be developed by researchers, scientists and engineers, all working together within the Rampart’s Avenir™ community to create a fully dedicated clean technology environment. Rampart’s Avenir™ is targeting clean technology in the areas of local energy production and conservation, water recovery and reuse and community food production.

From the outset, the Rampart’s Avenir™ community will be the first in the world to utilise cutting edge nanotechnology, in a full scale application. Nanotechnology is considered as the principle scientific platform for the improvement of new clean technology products, adding to economic and market viability. These new technologies will allow scientists to harness usable energy from minute sources such as vibrations in walls and paint on solar panels.

The Rampart’s Avenir™ community will act partly as a large-scale test platform as the developers aim to replicate the project throughout North America and Europe. Several US States and Canadian Provinces have already expressed interest.

Gerry de Klerk, CEO of Rampart’s Avenir™ commented, “Avenir means future in French and Rampart’s Avenir™ is the indeed the future of how we will live and work. Through the use of leading clean technologies and intelligent engineering, we are striking a balance between our quality of life and the future of the planet. I have always believed that finding ways to maintain quality of life while investing in new technologies is the only way to encourage greener living among all people and not just a niche group of individuals. I expect that the Rampart’s Avenir™ project will act as a blueprint concept that will be replicated across the world.”

The first residents are expected in Rampart’s Avenir™ in 2011 and discussions regarding industrial facilities are ongoing.

– END -

Does anybody know where this is going to be located? Might this have something to do with the "new town" that is planed north of Sherwood Park?

^ Interesting. It seems to me that the proposed development in Strathcona Cty. was going for something along these lines. It's about the only one I can think of. I find the idea a little unpalatable though.

Google brings up nothing on Rampart's Avenir, and only a dutch children's author on Gerry de Klerk... seems a little fishy to me.

Man, third round of hiring here in the past few months and I still cannot believe how few competent trades & technical people are looking for work in Edmonton. Everyone who's any good at what they do is busy as hell. If I can land one of two key jobs here in the city that I've had my eye on in the next few months I'm backlogged until 2012!

LEED SILVER
Edmonton

The City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Eskimo Football Club have selected MJM Architects, with local partners HIP Architects, as the prime consultant for the development of a $94M Multi-Use Recreation Complex and Field House attached to the south end of Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium. This 220,000 s.f. facility houses a 60,000 s.f. Aquatic Component, a 80,000 s.f. field house, a 20,000 s.f. fitness centre, 30,000 s.f. of Community space and 30,000 s.f. of new Eskimo Administration and Operations. As well as being the new home and practice facility for the Eskimo Organization, the building knits the shared field house, with the original 3 story community facility on the back of stadium into a holistic overall multi-purpose recreation complex for the communities of North Central Edmonton. The project scope includes a master plan for the entire commonwealth stadium site and major interventions into the interior face of commonwealth stadium to provide new revenue generating space for the EEFC and the Commonwealth Facility. MJM was invited and selected from a shortlist of 12 Sport and Community Architects from across Canada for this highly visible project. Schematic Design is complete and MJM is now working with the multiple client groups, various stakeholders, and the appointed construction manager Clark Builders to deliver a phased and fast tracked design to be open for the 2010 Grey Cup, with the remaining recreation complex to open Spring 2011.

Client/Owner: City of Edmonton
Area: 220,000 sq ft
Construction Costs: 94M

I have some pix of all three that I took the other day from the top level of the Royal Alex parkade with the intention of making them into a pano but never got around to it. Probably the best vantage point for the new construction downtown. I'll post them when I get home

Alberta highrise construction sites to be inspected after girl killed

BY RYAN CORMIER, EDMONTONJOURNAL.COMAUGUST 6, 2009 4:01 PMBE THE FIRST TO POST A COMMENT

EDMONTON — Occupational Health and Safety investigators will inspect all highrise construction sites in Edmonton after a three-year-old girl was killed by a wayward piece of sheet metal taken by the wind in Calgary.

Spokesman Chris Chodan said that although there hasn’t been a pattern of loose construction debris, a single death is enough for the department to conduct a series of safety audits in both cities.

“The wind will blow something off a roof in Edmonton just as easy as it would in Calgary,” Chodan said. “From 22 storeys up, if you drop something as small as a hammer or hard hat, it can cause substantial damage.”

The inspections will be done at 20 Calgary construction sites and at least six in Edmonton. Only multiple-storey buildings will be looked at. Chodan said the rules are simple: anything that could injure a worker or passerby must be properly secured, even against fierce storms.

It is common for OHS to do a round of inspections focused on one aspect of work-site safety, Chodan said, especially if there is recent public concern about it, as there was in Calgary after the storm.

Michelle Kresk was killed when a piece of sheet metal was blown from a highrise construction site and plunged 40 metres. The incident also injured her seven-year-old brother Eric and their father.

An OHS investigation into the death is ongoing, Chodan said.
