See those cables running on the edge of the platform?

See them again? Those cables act as a platform door. So in other words, if SkyTrain needs platform doors, we could install cables/glasses that move vertically upwards and we wouldn't have to figure out door location issues with the MK I and MK II vehicles.
Cost efficient, and it would resolve the whole door location problem, but they look absolutely ridiculous. It could also use a two or three more ropes for additional height.

The main problem with our system is not accidents, but suicides. I believe there have been 50 deaths on the system; 50 were suicides and the remaining were 5 were accidents.

So really, those ropes would do absolutely nothing to resolve our problem...nor would it increase the reliability of SkyTrain significantly by preventing any suicides, unless those wires are electrified and someone who touches it will be knocked unconscious and would fall back onto the platform and not onto the tracks.

Not to mention, i sure wouldn't want to be caught under those when it comes down. I'm almost certain that they aren't sensorized to pull back when it hits something like elevator doors, glass platform doors, or even SkyTrain doors.

BTW, those trains are sooooo Rotem. They're probably the same model as the Canada Line trains, except for some variations: overhead door supply, exterior sliding doors, and driver cabins. They also look like the exact same trains that were delivered to Rio de Janeiro 3 years ago.

Well for the lower class Hondas, yes there is way too much plastic in them. But the same can be said for Toyotas are the same. In fact, my Camry Hybrid is all plastic as well. I never had an issue with the buttons though. And you know, the Acura grills are really popular in the States... Americans love big grills... gorssness. Audi has the best styling in general heeehee...

I think those are hilarious and innovative. But the point of that is... if we want platform screen doors to work with our SkyTrain system, we need them going up instead of sideways which would be rather tricky. Just that cost itself can probably replace most of the MK Is in our system.

There's a motion sensor stretching from the beginning to the end of the platforms. But more funny is if you have your bag caught on one of those... up you go =)

OMG don't even get started with the current Acura's front grille, esp with the 2009 TL (ironically my entire family's 3 cars are all Honda/Acura, including my 2000 Accord that my dad used to drive and then gave me when I went into 1st year at UBC). Honda/Acura car designs have dramatically gone downhill in recent years, esp with the current gen Accord and the TL, although the interior is still pretty nice. The only Honda that's still hot all around is the Civic Si. But one particular car brand to really watch out for is Hyundai. They're really closing the gap between them and the Japanese/American cars. Some of their new models look absolutely stunning (think Genesis Coupe).

Hopefully my next car: Subaru WRX in hatch!! Either that, or perhaps Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart/EVO X if I earn enough once I finish my Masters or Mazdaspeed 3

Yup, that's it for cars.

Got a chance to ride on the new Mk2 cars last night (307/308). Overall a nice ride, I liked the new doors, the ride felt smoother, and quieter, all except for that hum people have been mentioning. It's bad.

Me as well. I actually didn't notice A/C sound, but it might be because two guys were at the front of the train complaining how A/C wasn't enough... =S

I did notice that the message for Broadway was only "The next station is... Broadway," which came as a shock for me.

That's why I seem a bit "out of the loop."

Could you please tell me the name of the forum about the possible UBC extension, and under which heading I'd look it up?

Thanks, I'd appreciate that.

3 collectors charged in TTC fare scam
Up to $20,000 stolen at subway stations

Jul 29, 2009 04:30 AM
Robyn Doolittle
Staff Reporter

Three TTC employees are accused of stealing as much as $20,000 in fares over the course of a year – less than three dollars at a time.

In the past week, three ticket collectors at some of the city's busiest subway stops – Union, Queen and Eglinton, all on the Yonge line – have been charged with theft under $5,000, as well as multiple counts of failing to collect a fare.

Toronto Transit Commission officials were alerted to the alleged fraud by a concerned rider, who noticed that after paying cash, they were simply waved through the turnstile by the collector. The employee is supposed to pass the fare back through the booth's window for the customer to deposit in the collection box.

"There's a couple of scenarios," said Toronto police Det. Rob Ermacora. "Someone will come up and give $5, but instead of breaking the bill, what happens is they'll give back the two and a quarter and keep the $2.75 (cash fare)."

Similarly, he continued, if someone bought four tokens, the suspect would pass the rider three, then pocket the fourth instead of putting it in the fare box.

The TTC's special constables launched an investigation with the assistance of Toronto police using surveillance cameras – there are two pointed at every collection booth – and undercover officers.

Yesterday morning, Toilane Fountain, 57, of Toronto, was arrested at the Queen station. Anthony Alfano, 65, of Whitby, and Kiran Sachdev, 56, of Toronto, were charged last Wednesday.

Each has been suspended without pay and will be fired if convicted, an official said.

Sachdev made more than $125,000 last year, earning a spot on the Ontario government's so-called sunshine list of public-sector salaries published annually.

He is to appear in court Sept. 3. The other two accused are scheduled to appear Aug. 31.

The transit commission estimates tens of thousands of dollars have been stolen, said TTC chair Adam Giambrone, who added the agency collects $900 million a year in fares.

Skytrain verses London Underground

Thought this would be fun.

First up, is a rough drawing showing what London Underground, Overground, DLR and Croydon Tramlink would look like superimposed over Metro Vancouver.

In addiiton to these lines - London also has many many suburban train lines, mostly in the the southeast area where the Underground is absent (which on this map would cover Surrey and Langley), and some lines to the north and west.

I centred the Circle Line (central London) over New Westminster, placing Downtown Vancouver near West Ruislip, Morden is in Ladner, Richmond is (appropriately( in Richmond, Upminster is in the Golden Ears Park, Watford is at Lions Bay, Amersham is practically on Vancouver Island.

Second up is Skytrain superimposed over London. Downtown is around Wembly Stadium, Richmond-Brighouse once again is in Richmond and King George is in Greenwich

^^ Neat, thanks for posting that.

On a different note, why the hell does the robot bus voice say "North Grandview Highway" instead of something sane like "Commercial Station" when the 99 arrives at Broadway and Commercial? It's not a big deal but I can see it being confusing for tourists.

By default, the stop names are by the intersecting street. It's TransLink's job to change the names. If you talk about confusing for tourists, practically all the stops on the 424 - Airport route is wrong:

On Display/Voice Announcer:
Air Canada is read as "North Service Rd." (that's not even the intersecting street)
"N. Service Rd." is read as "Grant McChonachie Way" (both can be correct, but the inconsistency itself is confusing. It should, instead, be Long Term Lot)
"Level 1" for Vancouver Int'l Airport (okay, true it's Airport ground level 1, but put Vancouver International Airport, not Level 1... Level 1 of what?)
"Airport Access Rd." is read as "Miller Rd."
"Aylmer St." is supposed to be "Aylmer Rd."

Due to a mechanical problem, Seabus will only be operating 1 vessel today. Sailings will depart Lonsdale Quay at :02 and :32 and from Waterfront Station at :16 and :46.

A bus bridge is in place from Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay and return. Coaches will leave at quarter past the hour from each terminus. Coaches will leave Waterfront Station from 609 Waterfront Rd, by the Helijet entrance.

This started last night actually.. before the fireworks ended, one of the boats' engine started overheating. It's been in single vessel mode since then.

Joy... I just can't wait until the new SeaBus comes in service so that the older ones can be retrofitted again.

Just saw the new ticket machines for West Coast Express, they're stainless steel and exactly like the ones for Skytrain and Canada Line. I was only allowed to look but here are some new features over the old ones:
  • A Smart Card reader for the new RFID based Go2 Card preloaded farecards that'll be released as soon as the ticket machines are released. The old PIN based Xpress Card farecards were no longer being issued starting the beginning of this year.
  • Debit/credit machines like the ones on the Skytrain ticket machines. Didn't the old machines have them as well? Yes, but the mid 90s circa card readers are notorious for not being able to read the cards more than half the time. The new machines will be welcomed by all frustrated passengers who use debit/credit.
  • Extension tickets, say if I only have a 28-day pass from Mission to Pitt Meadows, but one day need to go to Waterfront, currently I have to buy a full Mission to Waterfront ticket at Mission, get to Waterfront, then get reimbursed. I can also buy an extension ticket the day before. This is inconvenient and time consuming. The new machines will support extension tickets (also known as the Addfare to most of you).

They've had the machines for quite awhile now but there are a lot of bugs still to be worked out. No word yet on when these machines will be released. They were originally scheduled to be installed by March 2009.
