Well, when did you start flying with them? In the last 6 or so years they have improved an insane amount.

internationally..since I was a couple months old..so '87.
all of my relatives except for immediate family live in england so we'd got over there every three years..always flew air canada.

we also used to fly to victoria each christmas (during the 90's) and took canadian airlines a few times and I preferred AC on the domestic flights

more recently I have flown westjet quite a few times heading to track competitions and for work..northwest to florida..canadian north to hay river..united to hawaii.

I agree that AC has come a long way with their extreme makeover project but imo they were just improving a product alread superior to the competion (at least the competition available to us at YEG)

I fly alot to and can say that WestJet and Air Canada have similar space and I'm 194cm tall (6'4).

So lets use the facts instead of this — of "I felt"

Seatguru.com says this (and their upto date)

The average pitch of an Air Canada seat is 32 inches, where as the WestJet plane have upto 34 inches (WestJet does have planes where the pitch is only 32 as well).

Comfort-wise, if I'm on a long flight I far prefer the cloth seats on AC to the leather seats on Westjet. Otherwise the experience it pretty similar between the two.

I am 6'3 and on most planes, Westjet and AC with 32 inch pitch, if the AC craft has the new interior there is more leg room due to less bulky seats.

On the 737-800s that WJ has (only 9 of them) there is 34 inch pitch which is nice, but they are few and far between in domestic service.

Small note: I see USAir is bringing back a daily LAS non-stop. I'm not quite sure when the service starts, but it will be operating in October, at least on a CR9. Strangely, they won't be flying YYC-LAS.

I've noticed that WestJet's 737-600s and probably even the -700s seem to have some seats that I swear have got to have at least 33" pitch in front, especially in the front rows. And no, I am not talking about bulkhead seats or emergency exits (can't sit in 'em because I have a disability - this is due to government regulations).

Not all of AC's Y-class seats have 32" pitch or better. I know that its A319s have 31" pitch in Y from rows 23-29. I'm only 5'7" and about 140 lbs, but 31" is still a mite bit uncomfortable, and doubly so if the person in front reclines.

But I did sit in the rear of an AC 319 from Vancouver to St. John's via Calgary and Halifax back in May of this year, and it wasn't exactly pleasant sitting in one of those 31" pitch seats - especially when the guy in front of me reclined 99% of the time between Calgary and Halifax. It could be worse - there was a tall, lanky man sitting next to me who must've been at least 6' 4" - 6' 5" who had to fly from Calgary to St. John's.

Westjet will be introducing its own Loyalty program. RBC will offer a Mastercard that will provide rewards for WJ's frequent flyer program

I wouldnt be worried about the AC reduction to LAX aswell as WestJet goes daily year-round nonstop LAX.Hmmm, does that mean WestJet is pushing AC off some of its YEG markets???

Seatguru.com says this (and their upto date)

The average pitch of an Air Canada seat is 32 inches, where as the WestJet plane have upto 34 inches (WestJet does have planes where the pitch is only 32 as well).
I fly regularly too, especially shrt-haul Western Canada routes. My experience differs a bit tho

Checking seat guru confirms my experience, Air Canada seems more generous with space for its flying customers. Seat width is just as important to me as pitch :

Westjet:

B737-600/700 (70 planes) = seat pitch 32" width = 17"

B737-800 (8 planes) seat pitch 34" width = 17" (flew in one to Hawaii, not really good for long haul 3-4+ hours, I prefer wide-bodied for long-haul )

Air Canada/Jazz: (Bolded aircraft more comfortable than typical WJ 737 in my experience)

CRJ (25 planes) seat pitch 31-32" width =17" (same as WJ 737)

CRJ 705 Econ (15 planes) seat pitch 34" width = 17" / Exec Class pitch 37" width = 21"

ERJ 175 Econ (15 planes) seat pitch 33" width = 18" / Exec Class pitch 39" width = 21"

ERJ 190 Econ (45 planes) seat pitch 34" width = 18" / Exec Class pitch 39" width = 21"

A319 Econ (37 planes) seat pitch 31-32" width = 18" / Exec Class pitch 38-39" width = 21"

A32x Econ (41+ planes) seat pitch 31-32" width = 17" / Exec Class pitch 37" width = 21" (same as WJ 737 unless flying exec)

B777-200/300 Econ (6+ planes) seat pitch 32" width = 18.5" / Exec Class pitch 70" width = 20.4" wide-body for comparison.

= my preferred regional, short haul planes.

= planes I avoid

I would like to fly Exec of course, but my company always goes with the cheapest fare

Interesting story about the ERJ 190, when I was flying AC to Saskatoon recently from Vancouver, the people in the row in front of us were regular Westjet passengers and were flying AC for the first time in years. They couldn't believe how comfortable the ERJ aircraft was compared to the typical Westjet 737 - really they were raving not only about the more roomy seats but even more headroom too (they had two kids and sat 2+2 in the same row)... this mirrors my recent experiences and I now avoid WJ if I can get a ERJ (or even CRJ 705) to my destination for the increased flying comfort, plus AC is generally the same cost or less in our experience.

The ERJs really are sweet. The seat design in them is a generation ahead of even the new interiors on the rest of the AC fleet. IE: when you recline, not only does the back go back, but the seat cushion moves forward. Result: someone can recline in front of me and not crush my knees!

EIA tops North American airports again for marketing and communications excellence
For the second year in a row, EIA wins continental award for best airport communications

August 10, 2009 (Edmonton, Alta.) – For the second year in a row, Edmonton International Airport (EIA) has claimed the top spot at Airports Council International-North America’s (ACI-NA) “Excellence in Marketing and Communications Contest.”

EIA proudly secured the highest honour of the contest, the Peggy G. Hereford Award. This award is given to honour overall creativity and excellence in marketing and public relations among airports across North America. EIA competed with over 300 submissions from 62 airports across the U.S. and Canada.

“EIA’s dual commitment to outstanding customer service and promoting the Edmonton region are truly at the heart of our we’ll move you brand,” says Reg Milley, EIA President and CEO. “This win is another indication of how fruitful our efforts are to position EIA as an industry leader and proud community booster.”

In addition to the Hereford award, EIA took honours in seven award categories, with four first place finishes including a big win for the very popular Language of Speed destination marketing campaign.

Winners’ Circle
• First Place: Marketing Campaign (Language of Speed)
• First Place: Brochures (EIA Airport Guide)
• First Place: Print Advertising, Black and White (Language of Speed)
• First Place: Video and Film (A Tale of Two Passengers)
o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KWn1OOSCgU
• Second Place: Annual Report (2008 Annual Report: we’ll move you)
o http://corporate.flyeia.com/nonimages/4/450.pdf
• Second Place: Creative Innovations: Technology (Air Service USB Key)
• Third Place: Customer Service Initiatives (US Quick Connect)

This year’s win builds on past ACI-NA awards successes in 2007 and 2008, which have honoured the EIA brand launch as well as ongoing marketing and communications practices. Past winners of the Peggy G. Hereford award include airports in Los Angeles, Seattle and Denver—a peer group EIA is greatly honoured to be a part of.

The ACI-NA news release announcing the contest winners can be found on their website: http://www.aci-na.org/news/2009_August6.

Edmonton, we’ve struck it rich!

Join us to welcome a great non-stop destination to the EIA family:
Monday, August 17, 1 p.m.
Edmonton City Hall

(It’s a secret now, but here’s a hint: …our flying pipeline will mix oil with oil.)

See you there: interviews with key leaders including Mayor Stephen Mandel, a photo opportunity, and a ‘let’s get down to business’ celebration to make this one of the most successful routes in EIA history!
