Tafryn's pics are from a week ago.
The pavement in front of the station entrance at Vancouver City Centre is complete, as is the sidewalk along Granville on either side (maybe a few granite slabs to be put in) - and the dirt roadway was levelled out this week, which makes me think they'll remove the fences and allow people to walk on the dirt road (i.e. it seems too high for pouring concrete over top of it).

They should hire you.

I personally think that Canada Line should be represented with two different colours on the map. Red for Waterfront <--> Richmond-Brighouse trains and another colour (ok, the light blue) for Waterfront <--> Aiport trains. That would make so much sense for people leaving the aiport and heading to Richmond....they would know that a transfer is a must @ Bridgeport Station.

Can you tell all that from that map??

Thanks- I was thinking about that as well....since it has to be ready for Granville Showcase on Saturday. Are they going to open up the Van City Centre station entrance inside Pacific Centre?

Not sure - I was thinking that they would, but two lines of thought - retain just one entrance to contain the crowds (i.e. line-up) - or open up both entrances to disperse the crowds and patronize the stores!

The Vancouver Centre Mall side probably won't be open yet - last time I looked into the mall from the Bay side, it was a construction zone.

^ it would be nice to see both entrances open...but that would mean a huge crowd @ Pacific Centre when it is already jammed during weekends. Thanks for the info.

Sheesh, they're almost as bad as Whistler's mountain maps that were re-tooled by a wayfinding expert last year. Less than useless, more suited for the bottom of a bird cage.

Most maps I've seen for subway and transit stops are ones that do show the whole route (which they've done - basically sketch-like, geographical details escaping them ).

But the best ones I've seen also incorporate a separate map that shows the streets and parks and significant landmarks for the surrounding neighborhood of that specific station.

The ones in DC included concentric circles to indicate distance from the stop out to a 1/2 mile or so (though the map showed further), just to give you a sense of how far you'd be going from the station to nearby destinations - or to locate other stations nearby if they were close enough.

I can't see that it would require much thought or effort to produce those type of maps for the Canada Line. I find myself hoping these are just the initial maps to get the lines ready for opening.

In a basic sense these work. But they could provide so much more info with minimal effort.

"This is not Hong Kong or London."

That's how one councillor felt about the prospect of Richmond getting giant LED screens and streetside digital kiosks on or near the Canada Line guideway.

Evelina Halsey-Brandt was speaking before city council approved, by majority, the implementation of a five-year program to install two 10 by10 foot advertising/public information screens at the Aberdeen and Lansdowne Canada Line stations.

A six-foot high revolving digital kiosk will also be placed near the line's Brighouse station as part of the move.

The city, which estimates getting back almost $800,000 over five years in advertising revenue, will enter into a three-way revenue-sharing deal with the Canada Line operators InTransit BC and Lamar Transit Advertising for the operation of the screens and kiosk.

Halsey-Brandt said she hadn't supported the introduction of the screens prior to this week, on grounds of traffic safety, with motorists being distracted by the giant screens.

A staff report placed before Monday's general purposes committee stated that studies across North America indicate that the giant advertising screens do not increase accidents on the road.

"I still don't like this idea, we're not in Hong Kong or London," Halsey-Brandt said.

"I'm going to be consistent and not support this."

Public information messages will be posted on the screens at certain points during the day and also in emergencies.

But you won't convince Coun. Harold Steves of their merits.

"It's visual clutter. You'll never get an LED that beats a tree," Steves rhymed.

"Put conifers in there and make it more relaxing. I hate that giant screen for the Country Inn in Delta on (Highway) 99.

"Putting things like that on No.3 Road is ridiculous."

While Mayor Malcolm Brodie warned that the city may be treading a path that leads to more giant screens popping up in Richmond.

But they were in the minority and council voted in favour of implementing the program, which will go before full council for final approval.

'Just finished up now. It's really nice and quiet in the tunnels, plus all the sounds and announcements are the same as the rest of the Skytrain system. The underground stations are much bigger than the little entrances on the surface suggest and Waterfront and City Hall in particular are very airy at the platform level.
