Join the The Alberta Chapter - Canada Green Building Council as we go Back to the Future and host a tour of the Federal Building LEED project prior to design and construction. Enjoy the art deco lobby that has not been seen by the public for more than 20 years - a feature of only a handful of existing buildings in Canada. Tours will include pre-LEED design elements such as:

Transom windows from perimeter office into corridors to control circulation

Narrow floor plate for Daylight and Views

Operable windows for individual comfort for Controllability of Systems

Individually operating radiators under every window (1,200+) for Controllability of Systems

As well as a number of other original items.

This tour and networking event starts at 5:30 p.m. with tours starting at 6:00 p.m.

I'd love to be the operator that shows up at the building at 6:00 am on a monday in the middle of winter to find heating water running out the front door from a frozen fin tube rad panel

i would love to be the occupant that shows up at the building at 6:00 am every day to find they can control their environment to their needs.

^ Let me tell you some stories about occupants controlling their environments.

Two ladies are sitting in adjascent cubicles in adjascent control zones. One has the thermostat cranked to 25 and the other has the stat down at 17. One complains that it is too hot, one complains that it is too cold, and both control zones are fighting each other.

A government worker stays late and decides to have a smoke at her desk with the window open. THe window is left open, and overnight the temperature plunges, the fin tube below her desk freezes and floods out six stories of office building.

Windows are left open in a building overnight, causing the pressure in the building to go negative. As the fan systems on VFD's run to 100% speed to try & maintain pressurization, the combination of open windows and open VAV boxes creates a virtual wind tunnel in the building strong enough to pop ceiling tiles out and blow papers off desks. When workers show up the next day it looks as though a tornado has hit the office.

Here's a little trade secret for you: We never give occupants control of their environments. We give them the illusion of control. It's way too dangerous to allow the general population to control their environments. Most don't comprehend the consequences of their actions.

ex. 1 - ... you mean... you... might have to... discuss this with... your coworker? omg, like no way.

ex. 2 - on a bell curve there are always a certain percentage of velcro shoe people.

ex. 3 - you have a control solution to override all manual windows and close them at night or in rain/high wind situations and then reopen them at say 5am to take advantage of cool morning air prior to the building filling up.

...sure it is more time and discussion but all it takes is a slight bit more consideration and thoughtfulness.

My office has over 100 operable windows and yes situations come up where coworkers need to compromise, but 99% of the time i am thankful for fresh air, no AC, and sunlight.

^^i should add though that, and i am not sure what you do for work, if i were in the control industry i would not want it either for it means i have to think more creatively, it might reduce my job $, and it might make reduce my O&M considerations.

Operable windows are fine in small office environments where air quality and building efficiency is not that big a deal. There comes a point where the negative consequences negate any positive benefits.

lolz, you need to spend some time in a typical government or accounting office.

As for the automatic control of windows, I agree, however when project budgets are reviewed, one of the first things to be cut are automatic window systems. Even when systems are implemented, operable window control is a PITA.

not thanks, i hear they have very poor air quality, little controllability, and many offices without natural light.

I'm not sure it's that inaccurate..at least about the offices..at the last accounting firm I worked at all of the offices did have natural light..but at the government office I'm in now all of the offices are in the center of the floor..same goes for my dad's governemnt office

this is assuming cold is referring to an office as the single room occupied by a person..not the office as the place of work as a whole..I can't imagine an entire office not having natural light.

Speaking of RWH I noticed Chings is gone now... perhaps for awhile? Sherlocks patio is amazing at night, great paito to sit on and drink while looking at the DT lights.
