Ya its been dead for ever. I wonder what the logic was to install it and not plumb it.

I`m happy the bathroom trials are going well.

Looks great. I wish the city could afford to put this much care and attention into every street.

I'd love that too, but Satan would be skating to work by the time they got to every street.

in general, i think our streets are in pretty good shape. i don't know if every street needs a special treatment but i do agree that it would be great to see more of this type of detail.

i like the leaf imprints you see in the sidewalks around yaletown. that's kinda neat.

So there is no underground piping to it, or the fixtures inside haven't been installed? Both?

On Broadway, between MacDonald to about Waterloo they re-did the street and sidewalks recently. On the corners of each block, on the sidewalk, there are circular metal discs layed into the concrete about 1.5 ft across with some art. Each one is unique. I was pretty impressed.

Yeah I agree with the general quality of the city's streets, but not many measure up to the quality it looks like we are getting on Carrol.

In other news the TD Tower on Georgia looks like it will be getting a new glass canopy overhanging the street. Nothing fancy but thought some of the fourmers who work in the building might be interested. Work should start at the end of the summer and only take about a month.

Cool, thanks.

The existing canopy is a 1980s renovation - unless you mean on the plaza side (to replace the green fabric awning)?

Delirium ... I'm glad you like my photos and that you provided a link to each one on Flickr, but it would be nice if you would respect international copyright law, the all rights reserved mark on each page you lifted my shots off, the warning on my Flickr profile page and basic human courtesy by requesting permission to use them.

It always amazes me how people who would never think of walking into a Safeway, grabbing a few groceries and walking out of the store without paying think nothing of stealing copyrighted property. This morning, someone in the UK blogged one of my shots in a story about how people can better protect thenselves from theft!!!

Who are you people?

I've soft deleted the pics and have emailed the owner of the pics. I've asked the owner to post the pictures if they want as I'm sure we'd all enjoy them.

Or, we could just link to Mr. Bird's Flickr photostream, as it is visible to the public.

I'm a big fan of The Bay downtown, but Sears does nothing for me. I am too young to remember Eatons effectively. I'd imagine that I would like them now a days as they were going all high end, apparently, towards the end of their lifetime.

No department store outside of DT is any good to me. I find all of their stuff very unfashionable.

blah blah blah. it's called the internet, pal. anyone could have taken the same photos, so don't go on as if you've contributed something monumental. and if you're going to blither on about your flicker page and permission and so forth, ask yourself: what's the point of posting the photos in the first place? frankly, the "artistic" way in which you randomly snapped the street is interesting only in the extent to which it updates what someone else would have snapped...i.e. your shots aren't interesting enough for you to make a housewife fuss about. so yeah...go be boring somewhere else.

hehehe I was wondering why the pictures seemed to focus on the construction men and them being bent over in like semi-homosexual positions. I think the photographer is just embarrassed that he got cause all blue balled taking photos of construction men.

Example 1 http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackbird_hollow/3720779863/ (bend it like beckham and being lined up from behind)

2 http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackbird_hollow/3720778395/ (you screw that pole big boy)

3 - http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackbird_hollow/3721595354/ (pour that your dirty dirty men)

I rest my case........jury?

As long as my photos are properly linked and credited, I never have a problem with other people posting my pics as long as they're not trying to make money off my hard work. It just draws more attention to my flickr site anyway. I mean, it's posted on a public flickr site on the internet.
Equating that with stealing from a store is apples to oranges, it really is, don't kid yourself.

And we're all normal people from many walks of life. Who the hell are you?

Vancouver mayor wants new jail near downtown core

(CBC)

Vancouver's mayor says he wants to see a new provincial jail built close to the city's downtown core.

Gregor Robertson said Thursday he wants to see the new remand centre, which is needed because of overcrowding at existing facilities, built near downtown Vancouver.

"We're looking at somewhere close to the core where we can minimize the travel, the costs, the environmental impact of transporting prisoners all over the Lower Mainland to get to the courthouse here in Vancouver."

Robertson said he was interested in putting the facility on Main Street in the city's Downtown Eastside in a complex that already houses a police station and is in close proximity to the Vancouver provincial courthouse.

Robertson said he would like to build the remand centre in conjunction with a new police station to replace the existing aging facility.

The area is one of four potential sites the city is considering.

Coun. Suzanne Anton told CBC News Wednesday the city was also looking at industrial areas in False Creek Flats, Hastings North or south of Marine Drive near the Fraser River.

She said putting the facility on Main Street would be a huge economic boost for both the city and the Strathcona neighbourhood.

"There are the construction jobs, [and] there is the ongoing operation of the centre. It hires a lot of people, [and] there is a big payroll every year," she said.
Neighbourhood has become 'a dumping ground'

However, those who work with the residents of the Downtown Eastside, where homelessness and drug use are rampant, say this is not what the neighbourhood needs.

"I am hoping they are not choosing this neighbourhood because it is low income and they're hoping the fight back won't be quite so strong, but I think there will be quite a fight back," said Jean Swanson with the Carnegie Community Action Project.

Donna Whalley, the strata manager of an apartment building in the neighbourhood, agreed.

"This is the area that all of sudden has become so popular for a dumping ground," she said.

Whalley said the area is not just filled with homelessness and crime; it's a community with families and residents trying to revitalize the area.

"Every time we turn around, something else is coming that I think that has a major concern for the residents in terms of safety," she said.

Carl Gregg, who opened a restaurant in the area over one year ago, said things are improving and he wants it to stay that way.

"As long as it doesn't spiral backwards, then it could be a positive," Gregg said. "If it is going to spiral backwards and create a police state, then that may be a problem."
Location up to province

Two other municipalities in the Lower Mainland – Delta and Surrey – have also expressed interest in housing the new pre-trial centre, but ultimately, the provincial government will decide where it will go.

The province originally gave the region's mayors until September to pick from a list of 58 possible sites after the province's plans to build the facility at an old detention centre in Burnaby were scrapped because of community opposition. Local mayors rejected all of the sites on the province's list.

The province has said a new remand centre needs to be built in the Lower Mainland because existing facilities like the North Fraser pre-trial centre are operating at twice their capacity.

An anti-Olympic DTES-er by the looks of it.

It is strange. Most people who claim "All Rights Reserved" don't allow all sizes to be shown, to be downloaded by anybody who finds it.

So at least that explains the permanent "persecuted" state of mind.

It is only truly considered theft if someone else makes money off of another's copyrighted image. Such as if they pose it as their own and sell it to a magazine. Otherwise, if a link is posted and a photographer credited it is pretty much fare game. If anything it is free advertisement.

You're ridiculous. I am gay and I don't see any of what you're referring to in those pictures. Why do you see those things? Trying to slam this person by basically saying "hey, you're obviously gay" is well, screwed up and offensive in a way i shouldn't have to explain. This Blackbird fellow has other obvious flaws to point out, not those related to the childish, schoolroom homophobia to which you sink.
